Ingredients (Second Layer)

1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup grated coconut
1/2 cup pecans, coarsley chopped
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

Mix the ingredients and spread evenly over the first layer. It is not necessary for this to be
cool. Return to the oven at 275 degrees and bake for 25-30 minutes.

-From the chapter on Yvonne Elliman about a New Year’s Eve party at Pattie and Eric’s
which would’ve taken place New Years between 1975 to 1978:

YVONNE ELLIMAN

Yvonne Elliman and I met at a New Year’s Eve party given by Eric and Pattie Clapton
(Ringo had relinquished his annual responsibility for once). Yvonne was the innocent
victim of a crazy accident from which she suffered weeks afterward. Toward midnight,
the spirit of the party was rapidly rising and everyone was getting decidedly on the merry
side. The usual lads were there - Keith Moon, Ronnie Wood, Ringo, and actor John Hurt.
They were all getting up to mischief as usual. John decided to honor his host, Eric, by
delivering his interpretation of a speech from Henry V. Assuming the appropriate position
on the his knees, he gave an Oscar-winning performance which was received by the guests
with much cheering and whistling. Delighted, Eric decided to award John a knighthood,
which he proceeded to do with great ceremony. As John rose, he grabbed Eric’s knees
in an attempt to lift him into the air and they both fell over, landing full blast on top of
Yvonne, who, poor thing, had just arrived to replenish her glass.
“That’s Yvonne!” somebody yelled as we all rushed forward to extract her from the
sprawling mass of arms and legs. She was covered with marks from head to toe. They
were still with her when she returned to the United States several weeks later. I suppose
one could call it an occupational hazard after working with Eric for so long...

-Mary Frampton’s chapter on George Harrison:

GEORGE HARRISON

George Harrison is an enveterate traveler. I can’t seem to pin his spirit down to any one
place. Although he is now living in Henley-on-Thames, I’m sure he feels at home in many
other major cities around the world. A “Far East Man,” he has spent much time in India,
New York, and Los Angeles.

I first met George when they were celebrating at Friar Park, George’s house in Henley-on-
Thames, Pattie Harrison Clapton’s birthday. It was a double celebration - a
housewarming party party as well. They had just moved into the enormous house that Sir
Frank Crisp built at the end of the last century. What an extremely original nut case he
was! He put Japanese lakes in the grounds, friar’s faces all over the house - they are the
light switches; you turn the noses on and off. His piece de resistance is a scaled-down
construction of the Matterhorn! He loved to climb one of his towers and gaze through his
telescope at the mountain, which boasted miniature goats and sheep. When Sir Frank
Crisp died, his widow was forced, for financial reasons, to sell the house. A group of nuns
bought it and turned it into a convent school. Unfortunately, they didn’t appreciate Sir
Frank’s structural genius and they virtually destroyed the original concept of the place.
They filled in the lakes, turned the rose garden into a playground, and painted knickers on
all the cherubs. Fortunately, George had original plans and photographs of the place and
he now has everything back to its glorious state.

On Pattie’s birthday in 1972*, the house was virtually empty. They had just moved in. I
can’t tell you how creepy it was to wander through fifty unused rooms in almost total
darkness, just carrying a candle. George enticed the whole party down into the labyrinth
of caves - another of Sir Frank’s intrigues. They begin right below the house and run
under the grounds. George gave us candles and dared us to find our way out. Not one of
us could! We just wandered around in circles. It started out to be extremely funny and
soon became less and less amusing. We were verging on hysteria as the same faces jumped
out from the shadows and then disappeared. Eventually, George took pity on us and led us
back to the comparative safety of the old house.

(*NOTE: This was most likely Pattie’s 26th birthday party on March 17, 1970.
George and Pattie had just moved to Friar Park in February and had a
birthday/housewarming party that year when the main house was still empty. They were,
at that time actually living in one of Friar Park’s guest cottages.)

Now that the whole place is finished, the most marvelous addition is George’s studio. It
is the most beautiful recording studio I’ve ever seen - the whole area hangs heavy with
mysterious peacefulness. George has used it to record his latest albums. It has the most
up-to-date equipment of such quality. Perhaps he with his wife Olivia, will rest his
wandering soul in these surroundings for a while.

As his influences took him to India on so many occasions, it’s only natural that George
cooks Indian food simply and very competently. This lentil soup delicious.

DARK HORSE LENTIL SOUP

Ingredients

1 red chili
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 large onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic
1 cup lentils (one of more types of lentils can be used)
2 large tomatoes, chopped
2 green peppers, chopped
1 bay leaf
Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Heat a small amount of oil in a frying pan. When oil is good and hot, add the red chili and
cumin seeds. When the seeds stop sputtering, brown the onions and garlic in the seasoned
oil. In a separate deep pan, wash the lentils in plenty of water. When clean, liberally cover
with water. When the onions are browned, add them to the pan of lentils. Now add
tomatoes, peppers, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Potatoes and carrots and small boiling
onions may be added for a more substantial meal. Bring to the boil, cover, and turn down
to very low heat. The soup is ready to serve in an hour and tastes better the next day.

-Mary Frampton’s chapter on Ringo Starr, (Pattie is not mentioned by name, but was
known to always be included as a guest at Ringo’s parties in the seventies with either
George or Eric.):

RINGO STARR

There are two closely adhered-to customs in Ye Merry Olde England - both Guy Fawkes
Night and New Year’s Eve are spent at Ringo’s! It’s quite probable that I won’t see his
guests until the same time, same place next year but they’re guaranteed to turn up for
these two highly important occasions. Guy Fawkes Night* is the children’s special treat,
but the age of the “children” is extremely flexible! Ringo presides over a gigantic bonfire
and a fabulous display of fireworks. An enormous party follows which becomes a
competition to see whether the kids can outlast the “grown-ups.” The kids usually win,
of course! New Year’s Eve is very special, even more so for a northerner from
Liverpool. Certain customs must be respected to bring good luck to the household for the
coming year. Everyone piles out of the house, holds hands in a circle, and sings “Auld
Lang Syne.” Then there follows kissing with gay abandon. Then Ringo, as the host, stands
at the front door and welcomes each guest back into the house. Everyone carries a piece
of coal and a piece of bread, handing them to Ringo on the way indoors. This is a sign
that the house will be blessed with enough fuel and food for the coming year. After that,
anything goes! Most of the time, Ringo is resident in Los Angeles. So it will be interesting
to see what happens on those two special days in the future. I have a feeling that everyone
will turn up as usual. Old habits die hard.

(*NOTE: In the chapter in Mary Frampton’s book about Gary Wright, Mary described
the custom of Ringo’s Guy Fawkes Night parties, which Gary Wright and his wife Tina
also attended: “...at Ringo’s twice-yearly parties - the Guy Fawkes Night being a special
treat even for his two boys. This is when the English celebrate the anniversary of an
attempt by a certain Mr. Guy Fawkes to blow up the houses of Parliament in London.
The gentleman in question failed, and in fact was hung, drawn, and quartered for his
trouble, but on November 5 every year in England we commemorate the event by
lighting enormous bonfires and setting off fireworks. Gary was also a frequent guest
at the Harrison abode. He and George share the same religious beliefs. In fact, they
share the same guru!”)

Ringo’s talent as an actor emerged during the filming of the various epics starring the Fab
Four. Although excellent in their own way, none of the films were exactly “heavyweights,”
and although Ringo has had parts is several films since, I would still love to see him play
a role he can really get his teeth into. He obviously has a lot of untapped talent in that
spere. He’s still one of the best drummers in the world and loves to help his mates out on
their various gigs. An example of this was his appearance at the Band’s Last Waltz
Concert. Another was years ago. Ringo and Maureen (they were still married then) came
over to dinner, we all went upstairs to the living room and Peter sat down with his
acoustic guitar and played a song for Ringo and Maureen called “The Lodger.” Ringo
loved it and said he’d be delighted to play on the track if Peter recorded. He did, and he
did! It came out on Peter’s first solo album, Wind of Change. What a long time ago that
was. We’ve all gone our separate ways but I’m relying on Ringo’s twice-yearly dates for
us all to get together again.

RINGO’S FISH ‘N’ CHIPS

Ingredients

Fish Chips

Method

Get in your car, or walk, whichever the case may be. Travel to your local fish and chips
shop and ask for cod and chips. Add salt and vinegar to taste. Eat with fingers for best
results - I do! ‘Bye. --Ringo Starr

ME AND THE BEATLES -
Especially The One Who Dated Me

by PATTIE BOYD
our girl in the Beatles film

Who wouldn’t want to be in my shoes... lunching with George and hearing all about his
brand new Jag... watching the boys at work... listening-in on an impromptu session... and
maybe having the very first hearing of their next hit...

I suppose it’s just possible that when I’m about 35 I’ll look back on life and say: “That
was the most exciting thing that ever happened to me”; the day, maybe, when I married
a millionaire, won the Monaco Grand Prix, was the first girl on the moon, published the
year’s best-seller, won an Oscar as Cleopatra. Yes, I suppose it’s just possible. But
highly unlikely.

Because right now I can’t think of anything, anything at all, that could happen to me and
be more exciting than spending three whole days working with the Beatles. Except dating
one, of course, but that’s not exciting. It’s unbelievable.

That’s why, if you see a girl, medium height, medium face, medium blonde hair, whose
most distinguishing feature is that the feet of her white cotton socks are six inches off the
ground, you’ll know it’s me, Pattie Boyd. Since this whole fabulous business started I
haven’t touched down once.

Well, imagine it. One day, like thousands of others, you’re just a Beatle fan. You own
every one of their records (bought 9.2 a.m. the day of release), but your closest contact is
their picture on your bedroom wall. Then this voice on the phone says: “How would you
like to appear with the Beatles in their film?” Not only seeing them for real, but talking to
them, working with them, getting to know them. And getting paid for it.

I’d met film director, Dick Lester, while I was making a crisps commercial for television.
“I’m looking for two girls to play in a Beatles film. You’ve lots of expression,” he said
suddenly, “are you interested?”

I could hardly believe he meant it - and as the days passed without hearing from him, I
stopped trying to! Then my agent, Cherry Marshall, rang, telling me to expect a call from
the studio.

I sat alone at home all day waiting for the call, asking myself: Why should they want me,
anyway? I’m a photographic model, beginning to do quite well, but not an actress.
Suddenly the phone rang shrilly: “This is the studio. Your call is for 6.45 a.m. tomorrow.
Don’t be late.”

I shivered as I stood in the early grey light on Paddington Station next morning, and it
wasn’t just the cold. With another lucky girl, Pru Bury, I was to play a schoolgirl fan. We
were met and ushered aboard the special train where the scenes were to be shot. The
Beatles wouldn’t be joining us until we were half an hour out of London.

For the first time, I began seriously to wonder what they would be like and convinced
myself they’d be conceited, arrogant and aloof. They wouldn’t even notice me, I decided.
Why should they notice a girl of whom famous photographer Norman Parkinson had
asked; “Is it fashionable these days to look like a rabbit?”

--My first glimpse of the real live Beatles. They appeared, rushing madly alongside the
train!

Suddenly the train jolted to a stop. So did my heart. Through the window I saw four
fabulous boys running alongside the train, shouting; “Wait for us!” Then they burst into
the compartment, and I found myself shaking hands, saying ‘hello’ and laughing.

“Hi, you’re famous,” said George, with a grin, “I saw your pictures in the papers.”

As they joked and teased us, Pru and I began to feel as though we had known them for
years. Conceited? Aloof? Big-headed? How off-beam I was. They were so sweet, so nice,
so funny.

All that day, and the next, until 9.30 at night Pru and I were kept busy rehearshing and
filming our roles. Actually, all I have to say is: “Prisoners!” ... “There he is!”... and
“Ringo!” Not the most dramatic part in the world, nor the longest. But I must say I
found it pretty shattering.

The Beatles are terrific workers, full of of energy and enthusiasm, and when you’re with
them you know just why they’re great. But the most marvellous thing about them is their
friendliness; they don’t behave like would-famous stars at all.

Although they’re a perfect team, the boys are very different individually. Ringo is a born
clown, and top favourite in America. He has everybody rolling at his antics. But for all
his fooling, I think he has basically a very strong, serious character.

John seems to be the leader, somehow. He’s the married Beatle, thoughtful and serious.
He doesn’t talk as much as the others, but when he does everyone listens. I think his book,
John Lennon In His Own Write is just marvellous.

Paul is serious, too, especially when he’s working. He’s conscientious about everything
and has a great sense of responibility towards his fans.

My favourite is George. Why? I’m not sure. I think he’s the best looking for one thing.
Also, he’s shy, and so am I. He’s interesting to talk to- sometimes serious, often very
amusing. And that’s the way he made me feel. Interesting. I felt he really wanted to listen
to what I had to say. Perhaps that’s why I found myself singling him out, thinking of him
as George Harrison not George Beatle.

But I nearly died when he asked me out. My instant reaction was: ‘How super, I like him
so much, he’s so nice.’ Then immediately it hit me. “But goodness, he’s a Beatle- one of
the Beatles is asking me for a date!’

I can’t remember exactly what I said, but I must have stammered out some sort of
acceptance because I found myself, Pattie Boyd, dating my favourite Beatle, George
Harrison.

Fortunately, I soon got over the shock and found myself thinking of George as George.
When he turned up on my parents doorstep in Wimbledon, my young sister opened the
door and when she saw who it was, she nearly fainted with astonishment!

My Dates With George-

Aside from being a Beatle, though, George is the sort of boy any girl would be happy -
and lucky - to have as a boy friend. Yes, he’s good-looking and charming and polite. But
he so lively, too - full of go, enthusiastic about life. We laugh a lot, and talk and argue, but
mostly we laugh.

It is difficult, though, almost impossible in fact, to forget you’re out with a Beatle. People
just don’t let you. Everywhere, in restaurants, clubs or the street, they come up and ask
for autographs, or just introduce themselves, saying things like: “You’re George Beatle
aren’t you? I come from Liverpool, too.”

And it’s not just the kids, either. Lots and lots of older women rush up waving pieces of
paper for signatures. I often think they would condemn it as the worst of bad manners if
someone rudely interrupted them while they were having dinner, or dancing, or just having
a talk with friends. But George never seems to mind. Non of the boys do, in fact, and I
think this is one of the nicest things about them.

And this fan worship, I didn’t realize how tough it is. They can’t get in or out of their flat
at any time of the day or night without calling the police for a safe passage. There are
always fans waiting.
The Future? Just Fab! -
They can’t even use the telephone properly, because no matter how often and secretly
they change the number, within hours the fans have it and it starts and never stops
ringing. They just have to leave it off the hook.
But I have never seen one of the boys lose his temper. They are always polite and patient
and friendly. They don’t even complain privately.
Yes, they’re wonderful. And meeting them is the most wonderful of the many exciting
things that have happened since I made that television commercial. I’ve appeared in a film,
which was fun, but I don’t particularly want to do it again. I like modelling better (and
between you and me, I think I’m better at it).
And, of course, I’ve not only met the Beatles, I know them now. I’ve even holidayed in a
fairytale castle in Ireland with George and John and his wife Cynthia - something I
wouldn’t have dared dream about a few months ago.
What of the future? Who knows? Who cares? People say to me: ‘What do you want to do
with your life? Get married? Have children.’ But I never look ahead. I just live for each
day. I think you should let the future take care of itself. It will, you know.

THE END

Pattie’s Three Recipes:Pattie’s Three Recipes:
4 people
Vegetarian meal

FRIED MUSHROOMS

1 large field mushroom each
1 egg
Fresh breadcrumbs
Garlic salt
1 Ѕ oz. butter

Remove stalks from mushrooms. Add a little garlic salt to the beaten egg. Dip the mushrooms
in the egg, then in breadcrumbs. Fry in the butter and serve very hot.

VEGETABLE PASTIES

ј medium cauliflower
Ѕ swede, diced (aka - rutabaga)
2 large carrots, diced
ј lb. lentils
ј lb. shelled peas
2 medium onions, sliced
ј lb. mushrooms, chopped
1 courgette, sliced (aka - turnip)
1 aubergine, sliced
1 egg
ј pint single cream
Mixed herbs and seasoning
2 - 3 oz. butter
ѕ lb. short-crust pastry

Divide the cauliflower into small flowerets and boil with the swede, carrots and lentils
in salted water for 15 - 20 minutes, adding peas 3 minutes before the end. Drain and set
aside. Melt some of the butter in a frying pan and fry the remaining vegetables one
at a time. As they are cooked add them to the boiled and fried vegetables. Stir in the
mixed herbs, seasoning, cream and beaten egg (reserving a little of the latter to brush over
the pastry). Roll out pastry and divide into 4 squares, spoon vegetable mixture onto
each square. Damp the edges with a little water, fold over and press firmly together. Prick
with a fork, brush over with egg and place on the top shelf of a moderate oven for about
25 minutes or until pastry is cooked. Serve with salad of cos* lettuce, sliced avocado, fennel
and spring onions. Dress with vinaigrette and sprinkle with a handful of cashew nuts.

(*cos lettuce is same as romaine lettuce.)

RASPBERRY SORBET
1 lb. raspberries
Ѕ pint water
8 oz. sugar
Juice of 1 lemon and 1 orange
2 stiffly beaten egg whites
1 miniature bottle Curacao

Liquidise the fruit and press it through a fine sieve. Make a syrup by boiling together the
sugar and water*. Cool, add the raspberry puree, and the strained lemon and orange juice.
Pour into a well chilled tray and place in freezing compartment of fridge for about 30 minutes
or until mixture is almost frozen. (set fridge to coldest). Turn the mixture into a bowl and
beat with a whisk or rotary beater, then add beaten egg whites and liqueur. Whip thoroughly,
return to freezer for about ѕ hour or until set.
*See syrup-making instructions for Blackcurrant Ice-cream recipe, page 105.

(Excerpt from page 105 - to make syrup: )

Boil the sugar and the water together. After about 4 minutes boiling it must be watched
carefully as it begins to thicken. At the point where the syrup starts frothing and
the bubbles look white (just before it starts caramelizing) take it off the heat.

Patti Boyd, back in style
(Filed: 14/11/2005)

The celebrated Sixties model is back in front of the cameras - as the new face of Viyella. She talks to Hilary Alexander

Eyes shining, skin glowing and hair artfully tousled, Patti Boyd looks confident, healthy and happy. A former model, Sixties dolly-bird, and ex-wife of not one but two rock stars - the late George Harrison and Eric Clapton - Patti has long left the celebrity circuit behind. However, the British heritage brand Viyella has managed to persuade her to appear in front of the camera once again, as its new "face".

"Returning to modelling hadn't crossed my mind until Viyella invited me to front the winter campaign," she says. "These days, I'm much happier behind the camera."

Boyd, who has been taking photographs since the Sixties, has forged an enviable career as a photographer and, in the past year, has held major exhibitions in San Francisco and Rotterdam. She has snapped many of the major Sixties rock stars, but some of her most prized shots are from the Beatles' visit to the Maharishi in India in 1968, when she was married to Harrison.

Patti Boyd: 'I tried Botox once, but the pain was absolutely excrutiating'

"It really started as a hobby but, as time went on, I found I always had a camera with me. And then, after my divorce from Eric, I realised I had something I could do for myself as a career," says Boyd. "I started working for magazines [she is a contributing editor for Harpers & Queen], and then friends began asking me to do their portraits, or photograph their children; things just snowballed."

Now in her late fifties, Boyd keeps in shape by doing Pilates twice a week and powerwalking, either in the country or, when she's in London, around Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.

"I'd say I'm quite happy with the way I look," she says. "There are times when I look in the mirror and think I'd love to have a tweak here and there. But lines show that you have had an enjoyable life. I tried Botox once, but the pain was absolutely excrutiating. I'm not tempted to try it again."

Viyella believes she embodies the brand's new slogan, "Fabulous at Every Age", a campaign that crowns a year of revamping and sales increases under the guidance of its managing director, Christine Lucas. The campaign is being celebrated with an exciting competition to find the next "face" of Viyella.

'Looking great is no longer about what age you are," says Lucas. "It's about creating your own personal style and attitude. Baby boomers like Patti, Susan Sarandon and Trudi Styler have redefinined the forties and fifties.

"It's a great market to design for, because these women are affluent, mostly professional, they like clothes, and they want to invest in good quality, stylish outfits."

Viyella's recent market research shows that the 50-plus female shopper outspends her younger counterparts significantly - spending, on average, £440 a month, compared with £378.

"So many brands feel they have to leave the mature customer, and I can't understand it - these women like to spend," says Lucas.

The new winter collection, which is designed to form the building blocks of a modern wardrobe, features pieces in tweed, velvet, houndstooth and sheepskin, relaxed tailoring, statement coats, and ultra-feminine skirt suits.

Key items include a luxurious, washable, fake-shearling jacket in tan or blonde, £399, a claret devoré velvet dress (as worn here by Patti), £139, and a cocoa cardigan with ribbon embroidery and pretty glass buttons, £69.
