A new, "definitive" edition 2-disc DVD of the "Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story" is getting a release on 6th February. We've taken a thorough look at the DVD, and have also managed to get a special price on pre-orders of this title for Brain Damage visitors.

Some of you will be wondering what on earth a "definitive" version of the DVD might entail. Some of you will already own a past edition of the release. Disc one of the DVD is devoted to the BBC documentary, originally broadcast in 2001. Most of you will be familiar with this fascinating, and well crafted, look at the history of the band with a particular focus on the very early days of the band. Elsewhere on the first disc is a lengthly (some 55 minute) interview with Roger Waters - an absorbing trawl through his memory banks!

Turning to the second disc, here we find more interviews - with David Gilmour (lasting 36 minutes), Nick Mason (28 minutes), Richard Wright (26 minutes) and Robyn Hitchcock (20 minutes) - alongside other items which include a timeline, discography and a quiz.

Today, 6th January, marks the 60th birthday of Pink Floyd founding member Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett. Born in Glisson Road, in Cambridge, back in 1946, Roger showed interest in music from a very early age. It was at a jazz club in his home town that a drummer there - one Sid Barrett - gave the lad the nickname Syd, spelt differently to avoid confusion. The name stuck!

Syd stayed with Pink Floyd until early 1968, when David Gilmour joined the band to supplement their playing. It wasn't long before Syd was no longer part of the band (with his condition worsening day-by-day, some could argue he wasn't part of the band for some time prior to this), but undaunted, he started out on a solo career which revealed his fragile state to the world.

We first told you about a new book about Pink Floyd's classic album, "Dark Side Of The Moon", being published by Ashgate Publishing, back in March 2003. It was obviously in its early stages then, but we're happy to say that the book is now finished, and will be hitting the stores on 12th January.

"Speak To Me: The Legacy of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon" will be available as a hardback and paperback (softback) simultaneously - the only difference between them being the bindings.

The book will contain fourteen essays, three interviews and a 50-page annotated bibliography. Literary and music scholars from across the globe will contribute the essays, which all focus on the music, and the three interviews are with Clare Torry, who sings on the album, Mike Gordon of Phish, who have performed the album in concert, and Michael Goldwasser of Easy Star Records, who produced the excellent "Dub Side Of The Moon" reggae tribute to Dark Side - reviewed elsewhere on this website.

Brits judges furious at 'best live act' snub to Pink Floyd

Their reunion after more than 20 years was widely regarded as one of the musical highlights of the past 12 months. But rock veterans Pink Floyd have been snubbed by this year's Brit Awards, with the band failing to make the shortlist for the year's best live acts.

Robbie Williams, who like Floyd performed at Live 8, has also been left out of the live nominations, which were announced yesterday.

Pink Floyd re-formed, with bass player Roger Waters joining guitarist David Gilmour and the rest of the band for the first time since 1981 when they played the awareness-raising concert at Hyde Park in July 2005.

Most of the panel of judges who decided Brits live nominations recommended the band should go on the shortlist, with several also choosing Williams. But they were told they had to choose performers who had drawn a paying audience - both the acts played only at Live 8 last year, where tickets were free.

One judge said: "It is ridiculous. Pink Floyd's performance was clearly one of the biggest talking points of 2005 in the music world."

The shortlist is made up of Oasis, KT Tunstall, Kaiser Chiefs, Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand. The other categories' shortlists will be announced on Tuesday.
