Brain Damage: Как вышла фотография? Как вы приняли участие в её создании?

Вик Сингх: После того, как я встретил группу, их менеджер [Питер Дженнер - пер.] позвонил мне и спросил, смогу ли я сделать снимок для обложки их первого альбома. Я спросил у ребят какие есть у них идеи по поводу обложки, они сказали, что ещё не сформировали окончательно имидж группы, т.к. были новой группой и положились на меня в создании дизайна.

BD: До этого вы слышали что-либо о группе, или слышали их музыку, до того как сделали снимок?

Вик: Да! Я уже встречал группу, ибо работал в музыкальном бизнесе. У группы был психоделический уклон, их музыка была абстрактной, отличающейся от любой другой группы 60-х гг.

BD: Что сподвигло вас сделать именно такую обложку?

Вик: У меня была призма, расщепляющая и умножающая изображение,- идеально для психоделического образа группы, также я попросил группу надеть какие-нибудь чрезвычайно яркие цветные костюмы в стиле тех лет, в надежде, что это будет правильно показывать группу на обложке их альбома.

BD: Как вы достигли такого эффекта?

Вик: Я сделал снимок в моей студии камерой Хасселблад с прикреплённой к нему призматической линзой, усилил свет, поместив группу на белом фоне.

BD: Каково было с ними работать?

Вик: Очень легко. Мы потратили целый день, слушая их музыку, болтая и делая снимки, было весьма приятно работать с ними.

BD: Станете ли вы работать с ними снова, если появится такая возможность?

Вик: Да. Интересно увидеть, что у нас получилось бы сейчас.

BD: После этого проекта, были ли у вас ещё какие-либо фотографии, относящиеся к музыке?

Вик: Да. В то время я работал с различными Записывающими Компаниями, Менеджментом и Прессой. У меня была лишь одна сессия с ПФ. После этого группа стала работать со Стормом над образами и дизайнами обложек, что они делают и по сей день.

BD: Последний вопрос, как вы сказали, вы по сей день занимаетесь фотографией. Как изменился мир фотографии для вас за эти годы? Помог или ухудшил подъём новой технологии в процессе создания фото? И если бы вы могли заново воссоздать ваши прошлые работы (обложку к Дудочнику, к примеру!), согласились бы вы на это?

Вик: В 60-е гг. использование спец. эффектов для снимков и поп фильмов для муз. индустрии было ограничено и крайне дорого (видео плёнок ещё не было). Поэтому я получил это, создавая эффекты для снимков в фотоаппарате и эффект тёмной комнаты для фильмов на камере Аррифекс, плюс уловки в монтаже фильма. Теперь технология открыла двери как для созидания, так и для большей возможности общения. Для меня это был процесс обученя, не только в фотографии, но и в мультимедиа. Обложка для Дудочника была довольно новаторской для 1967г. Для меня естевственно соединять старое с новым. Даже распечатку ч/б зернистой фотографии, отсканированной и обработанной цифровым способом удачно выглядит. Соединяя лучшее обоих миров, получаешь прекрасные результаты.

THE GREAT PINK FLOYD MYSTERY

As thousands in ballrooms and assorted hell-holes across the country are deafened and blinded nightly by the Pink Floyd, the well-known psychedelic group, thousands might be forgiven for thinking: "What the 'ell's it all about ?"

Are the Pink Floyd being quite honest when they make coy and attractive records like "See Emily Play" then proceed to make the night hideous with a thunderous, incomprehensible, screaming, sonic torture that five American doctors agree could permanently damage the senses ?

FRUSTRATED
The Floyd do not wish to appear dishonest, but they are worried. They appreciate the contrast between their records and live performances, agree the latter might not be all that they should be, and are taking steps to rectify the situation. Roger Waters, bass player, with rather aesthetic good looks, and a taste for frequent pints of bitter, grappled frankly with Floyd problems this week.

"We're being frustrated at the moment by the fact that to stay alive we have to play lots and lots of places and venues that are not really suitable. This can't last obviously and we're hoping to create our own venues."

Roger accepted a government-approved cigarette and warmed to his theme: "We all like our music. That's the only driving force behind us. All the trappings of becoming vaguely successful - like being able to buy bigger amplifiers - none of that stuff is really important.

STAR
"We've got a name of sorts now among the public so everybody comes to have a look at us, and we get full houses. But the atmosphere in these places is very stale. There is no feeling of occasion.

"There is no nastiness about it, but we don't get rebooked on the club or ballroom circuit. What I'm trying to say is that the sort of thing we are trying to do doesn't fit into the sort of environment we are playing in. The supporting bands play 'Midnight Hour' and the records are all soul, then we come on. "I've got nothing against the people who come, and I'm not putting down our audiences. But they have to compare everybody. So-and-so's group is better than everybody else. It's like marking exercise books. Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich get a gold star in the margin, or 'Tick - Very Good.'

"On the club scene we rate about two out of ten and 'Must try harder.' "We've had problems with our equipment and we can't get the P.A. to work because we play extremely loudly. It's a pity because Syd (singer Syd Barrett) writes great lyrics and nobody ever hears them.

STAGE
"Maybe it's our fault because we are trying too hard. After all the human voice can't compete with Fender Telecasters and double drum kits. We're a very young group, not in age, but in experience. We're trying to solve problems that haven't existed before. Perhaps we should stop trying to do our singles on stage. Even the Beatles, when they worked live, sounded like their records. But the sort of records we make today are impossible to reproduce on stage so there is no point in trying."

Isn't this being dishonest ?

"This is the point: We don't think so. We still do 'Arnold Layne' and struggle through 'Emily' occasionally. We don't think it's dishonest because we can't play live what we play on records. It's a perfectly ok scene. Can you imagine somebody trying to play 'A Day In The Life'? Yet that's one of the greatest tracks ever made. A lot of stuff on our LP is completely impossible to do live. We've got the recording side together and not the playing side."

"So what we've got to do now is get together a stage act that has nothing to do with our records, things like 'Interstellar Overdrive' which is beautiful, and instrumentals that are much easier to play."

Are the group depressed when they fail to communicate with an audience ?

"It's sometimes depressing and becomes a drag. There are various things you can do. You can close your mind to the fact you're not happening with the audience and play for yourself. When the music clicks, even if it's only with ten or twelve people, it's such a gas. "We're trying to play music of which it can be said that it has freedom of feeling. That sounds very corny, but it is very free."

What is the future of the Floyd ?

"We can't go on doing clubs and ballrooms. We want a brand new environment, and we've hit on the idea of using a big top. We'll have a huge tent and go around like a traveling circus. We'll have a huge screen 120 feet wide and 40 feet high inside and project films and slides."

CIRCUS
"We'll play the big cities, or anywhere and become an occasion, just like a circus. It'll be a beautiful scene. It could even be the salvation of the circus! "The thing is, I don't think we can go on doing what we are doing now. If we do, we'll all be on the dole."

ARCHITECTUAL ABDABS

And up-and-coming pop group here at the Poly [Polytechnic School - Ed.] call themselves "the Abdabs" and hope to establish themselves playing Rhythm and Blues. Most of them are architectual students.

Their names are Nick Mason (drums); Rick Wright (Rhythm guitar); Clive Metcalf (bass); Roger Walters [sic! - Ed.] (lead); and finally Keith Noble and Juliette Gale (singers).
Why is it that Rhythm and Blues has suddenly come into its own?
Roger was the first to answer:
"It is easier to express yourself rhythmically in Blues-style. It doesn't need practice, just basic understanding."
"I prefer to play it because it is musically more interesting," said Clive. I suppose he was comparing it to Rock. Well, how does it compare? Roger was quite emphatic on this point: "Rock is just beat without expression, though admittedly Rhythm and Blues forms the basis of original Rock."
It so happens that they are Jazz enthusiasts.
Was there any similarity? I asked.
In Keith's opinion there was. "The Blues is just a primitive form of mdern jazz."

David: Well, I am trying to crap out another "Best of" Pink Floyd album. Going through songs that I wrote the majority of so I don't have to share the money. I need a fancy album cover to sell this damn thing. Hey, maybe a big stadium tour, could play your old hits..

Roger: Yeah, that's great, uhh, I wanted to talk to you about this benefit.

David: Maybe I could design this cool dragon and call the albums "Pink Floyd and the Dragon Mix"? I could print some real cool t-shirts and make some money. I would need a new song to include on the album, better get the wife to work on that. What do you want, prick?

Roger: Hey, if it will help this benefit more, by me playing with the band, I am up for it.

David: We don't need you! I am Floyd! I was always Floyd! Syd was not Floyd! I am! Did you hear the Division Bell? It was brilliant!

Roger: Yeah, yeah, it sounded like a decent Pink Floyd cover band. Look..

David: I won the case, the name is mine! Hey, maybe I could relase a new Pink Floyd book with pictures of me in it?

Roger: So I'll see you on Saturday night?

David: I don't know.

Roger: Look, it will help sell a lot of our back catalog, that includes people buying "Momentary Lapse of Reason," not knowing how crappy it is.

David: Yeahhhhh, OK, we will do it. I hate you!

GILMOUR IN NEW ROYALTY WRANGLE


DAVE GILMOUR has reportedly entered into a new rift with his PINK FLOYD bandmates - this time over album royalties.

Sales of the veteran rocker's compilation album ECHOES: THE BEST OF rose 1,400 per cent after they stole the show at the London Live 8 event last Saturday (02JUL05) - prompting Gilmour to pledge any extra money they earn to charity.

But Gilmour's bandmates - guitarist ROGER WATERS, drummer NICK MASON and keyboard player RICK WRIGHT - are reported to be reluctant to mimic the gesture.

A source says, "They were non committal."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Mason and Wright says, "I wouldn't say there was a bust-up. It's a personal decision."

The band split in 1981 after a row between Gilmour and Waters.
