Today actor Pete Postlethwaite OBE, Mike McCartney, photographer and brother of Paul, and fundraiser Michelle Lewis MBE will become Honorary Fellows of Liverpool John Moores University.

Cultural ambassador for Wirral Mike McCartney, has had a major cultural influence on Merseyside since the 1960s when he and his fellow humorists formed the band The Scaffold, whose hits included "Lily the Pink".

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY's brother has been charged with sexual assault after allegedly groping a waitress.

MIKE McCARTNEY, a 61-year-old father of six, was arrested when police were called to a party held in the upstairs room of a public house. A waitress at the party claimed he had fondled her bottom.

Mike denies the charge, saying, "I have been waiting for this to come up in court for a year and I want to clear my name. It's all very upsetting."

Mike pleaded not guilty at Chester Magistrates Court in northern England last week (ends09SEP05).

WIRRAL cultural ambassador Mike McCartney has spoken of his torment after it was revealed he was at the centre of sexual assault allegations.

McCartney, 61, younger brother of ex-Beatle Sir Paul, could face jail if convicted of the charges that have rocked both him and his family.

The alleged incident took place last year at a family member's 60th birthday party in an upstairs function room at a pub in Parkgate, Wirral.

A waitress at the pub said the father-of-six groped her behind whilst she worked at the function. Mr McCartney has since been charged with indecent touching.

Speaking to the Daily Post from his Wirral home last night, he said: "I have been a prisoner in my own home, restricted in what I can say in this very delicate matter.

"It was originally me who insisted the police be involved to resolve the matter.

"I have been asking for the truth to be told for over a year.

"All will be revealed when we get to the truth of this ludicrous allegation."

McCartney, an acclaimed photo-grapher and former member of 60s pop band Scaffold (creators of Lily the Pink), who was appointed cultural ambassador for Wirral last year, has vowed to clear his name in the courts next month.

He said: "I can say that I have been happily married for 23 years and am the proud father of three boys and three girls.

"It is totally inconceivable that I would act in such a way towards a young lady.

"I have the full support of my family who were there in a very well lit room where the incident is supposed to have occurred.

"I look forward to clearing my good family name."

Sir Paul was not at the party but has been notified of his brother's position.

Wirral council leaders refused to be drawn into the allegations surrounding Mr McCartney.

Cllr John Hale, the borough's executive member for culture and community services, said: "It would be highly inappropriate for me to discuss as this is a pending legal matter."

Last week, McCartney pleaded not guilty to indecent touching at Chester Magistrates' Court.

He is due back in court next month.

SIR Paul McCartney last night made a public statement of support for his brother Mike who is facing charges relating to a sexual assault.

Mike McCartney has been charged with indecently touching a waitress after she complained he had groped her bottom.

But the Beatles legend was last night in no mood to contemplate that his younger brother might be in any way culpable.

Sir Paul said: "I totally support my brother, Mike McCartney, in defending this allegation.

"Mike is a devoted family man, who has respect for people, and equally he has earned respect for himself in both his professional and private life.

"I look forward to his name being cleared and the anxiety caused to him and his family being relieved as soon as possible."

Mike McCartney pleaded not guilty to the indecent touching charge at Chester Magistrates' Court last week and will appear there again next month.

The charge has been hanging over him for more than 12 months but only recently became public.

Mr McCartney has denied the allegation which relates to an incident at a pub in Parkgate, Wirral, in 2004.

The alleged offence took place while the 61-year-old photographer was celebrating a family member's birthday in an upstairs room.

A waitress at the pub said he grabbed her bottom.

Sir Paul was not at the function but has been aware of the allegations for some time.

Mike McCartney, who was made a Wirral cultural ambassador last year, has spoken to the Daily Post about his 12 months of torment as the allegations hung over him.

LONDON, England -- Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney says he will stand by his brother after he was accused of groping a waitress.

Mike McCartney, 61, was charged with indecent touching following an alleged incident at a pub in Wirral, Merseyside in northern England, last year, the UK's Press Association reported on Wednesday.

The photographer and former member of 1960s band The Scaffold denied the charge at Chester Magistrates Court last week. He is due to appear before the court again next month.

Sir Paul was not with his brother on the night in question, but said he looked forward to him clearing his name in court.

In a statement issued through his publicist, he said: "I totally support my brother in defending this allegation.

McCartney Jr - formerly a member of 1960s pop group THE SCAFFOLD - appeared at Chester Magistrates Court only to confirm his name.

Если я правильно помню, то настоящее полное имя Майка - Peter Michael McCartney. Когда он брал себе псевдоним фамилии, то для благозвучности оставил только краткую версию of his middle name - Майк. Получилось всем известное Майк МакКартни. Но так уж сложилось, что почему-то все помнят на счёт ненастоящей фамилии, а вот настоящее имя из истории как-то стёрлось.

Свободу Майклу!
