DONOVAN: 'GEORGE WAS A TRUE FRIEND'

Hippie icon DONOVAN was horrified to be the victim of a sensational police drugs bust in 1966, but was thrilled to have THE BEATLES star GEORGE HARRISON on his side.

The late rocker realised the MELLOW YELLOW singer had been used as an example by police, and he readily offered financial and moral support when the shocking news broke.

Donovan recalls, "We were taken to Marylebone police station, booked, finger-printed and given a cup of tea. Then, at 4am, we were let out on to the city streets.

"The next morning the papers were full of it. At 9.30 am, the phone rang. It was George Harrison. He knew I had been victimised.

"'You can have GBP10,000 by noon, Don, if it helps,' he said.

"I felt better now that George had phoned, and replied: 'Thanks George, that's really so good of you to call. I'm OK with money.'"

DONOVAN'S BROKEN DREAMS OF BAEZ

Sixties star DONOVAN had a huge crush on fellow folk star JOAN BAEZ, but his dreams of romance with the singer turned sour when he realised she was in love with BOB DYLAN.

The MELLOW YELLOW star knew the pair had always been close, but he was turned off when Baez constantly waxed lyrical about the musical pioneer - even when she was in Donovan's arms.

Donovan recalls, "Joaney and I met backstage at one big folk concert and I found myself in complete awe of this exotic woman. I fancied her like crazy.

"Late one afternoon I found myself alone with her in her room at the Savoy Hotel in London. Soon, this goddess and I were in each other's arms.

"We kissed tenderly but then my reverie was broken as she talked of her recent love affair with Dylan, of the intimate times they had shared, and how he had made her laugh.

"My desire for her began to fall away. I think she was still a bit in love with him."

DONOVAN IMPRESSED BY SPIRITUAL BEATLES

Sixties legend DONOVAN was staggered by the wealth of THE BEATLES when he first met them, but soon learned there was more to them than glittering materialism.

The CATCH THE WIND singer initially dismissed GEORGE HARRISON as "flash" when he offered him a lift in his customised Mini Cooper, but he quickly bonded with the sensitive guitarist's spiritual side.

He recalls, "I did a double-take and thought, 'What a flash bloke', but George and I would soon become dear friends through our shared interest in spiritual enlightenment."

DONOVAN: 'McCARTNEY AND I WERE SONGWRITING RIVALS'

Hippie icon DONOVAN frequently clashed with his pal SIR PAUL McCARTNEY when they attempted to write songs together, as he insists they had both trouble keeping up with each other.

The MELLOW YELLOW star, who considers himself in the same songwriting league as the former BEATLES star, admits life was not always easy for artists of such stature.

He says,"We were kindred spirits, but we found it hard to write songs together as we were both too prolific.

"Any ideas that I had, he would immediately riff off into an idea of his own, and vice versa."

DONOVAN: 'POLICE TREATED BEATLES LIKE ROYALTY'

Hippie icon DONOVAN was amazed by the preferential treatment THE BEATLES received from authorities during the heady 1960s - as they were frequently pardoned by sycophantic police officers.

The CATCH THE WIND singer recalls a policeman knocking on SIR PAUL McCARTNEY's door regarding an illegally parked car, but Donovan couldn't believe the constable's reaction upon seeing the superstar.

He recalls, "Paul came to the door and the policeman said, 'Oh, it's you, Mr McCartney. Is it your car, sir? A sports car?'

"Paul gave him the keys and the car was parked - by the starstruck policeman!

"A few minutes later he returned with the keys and saluted, would you believe."

A folk rocker and early prince of flower power, Donovan (b. 1946) shares wistful memories of his youth growing up in bombed-out Glasgow, Scotland; rambling adolescence in England; and precipitous stardom at age 18. Early on, Donovan (who's known by his first name) contracted polio, leaving him lame. An art student, Donovan left home by 16 to wander with his lifelong friend Gypsy Dave and taught himself how to play guitar by mimicking the folk styles of the Carter Family, Doc Watson, Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, among others he credits. After appearances on the British TV show Ready Steady Go! in 1965, he landed a record contract, and Catch the Wind (with its Bob Dylanesque sound) rode the crest of the British Invasion. Fusing folk with jazz and metal, Donovan forged "Celtic rock," and in his recording sessions, engineered brilliantly by Mickie Most, he worked with all the happening musicians and even collaborated with the Beatles. Donovan toots his own horn, amiably. As he achieves in his music, Donovan writes his bohemian manifesto personably and earnestly, stopping short around 1970, when he reunited with muse Linda Lawrence and dropped out.
