Beatles memorabilia disappoints sellers
A John Lennon schoolbook containing an illustration of a walrus has been sold at auction for £126,500 (€182,800).

Featuring the 12-year-old Lennon's drawing of Lewis Carroll's poem The Walrus And The Carpenter, the book had been expected to reach up to £150,000 (€216,700). The poem inspired him to write The Beatles' 1967 song I Am The Walrus.

The book of the late Beatle's early thoughts, drawings and poems was sold to a private collector in an auction of pop memorabilia in London.

A ship's log book written by the singer during a stormy trip to Bermuda in 1980 fetched £12,000 (€17,300), half its highest valuation. A letter from Paul McCartney to his bandmates failed to reach its £50,000 (€72,200) reserve price.

Lennon memorabilia fails to sell in London

A yacht's log book anointed and autographed by late Beatle John Lennon after he sailed to Bermuda in 1980 for his last summer holiday has narrowly failed to reach its reserve price at a rock and pop memorabilia auction in London. The journal from the Megan Jaye yacht was one of the star items in the auction held at Madame Tussauds this week and was expected to fetch between $26,000 and $43,000. But the highest bid for the book, which includes a sketch by the musician along with the hand-written message ''Thanks Megan, There's no place like nowhere'' and his signature, was just below the $26,683 reserve price. Now the book is being offered for a straight sale to the highest offer made to Cooper Owen Auctioneers in the UK. The firm is already in talks with one potential buyer prepared to pay $24,000. Ted Owen, a director of the auction company, said there was still time for anyone from Bermuda interested in acquiring the historical item to put in an offer during the next two weeks. He was surprised the journal, which also includes signatures and messages from others who have sailed on the Megan Jaye, did not reach its reserve price.
''It is a fantastic piece. I thought it would fly out. But there was a lot of other things going on in the world yesterday and it did not quite capture the imagination of bidders. But it is a true museum piece that will only grow in value,'' said Mr. Owen.

Mr. Owen said: “This time it just failed to reach the reserve price. We are now negotiating a sale. Normally for two weeks after an auction we accept further offers.”
Amongst the items sold at the auction this week was a school book that belonged to Lennon when he was 12 years-old and includes his illustrated interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s poem Walrus and the Carpenter, which many believe was a partial inspiration for Lennon’s 1968 Beatles’ tune I Am The Walrus. The school book sold for $226,150.

The historical significance of the Megan Jaye log book makes it a one-off item that will grow in value, said Mr. Owen.
During Lennon’s five-day sailing trip from Rhode Island to Bermuda in June 1980 he took charge of the chartered 43ft schooner after the captain and the other four crew were taken ill and was at the helm when the yacht weathered a fierce Atlantic storm to reach St. George’s hrabour. In an interview Lennon recalled the events and how he had sung sea shanties as he was lashed by waves and rain while steering the yacht.

The ex-Beatles’ trip to Bermuda has recently been listed as one of the 11 most significant moments of Lennon’s life. It led to him writing songs again after a five-year hiatus from the music business.
He enjoyed a two two month holiday with his young son Sean and later that year recorded his last album Double Fantasy – its title inspired by a Double Fantasy freesia he’d come across in the Botanical Gardens – before he was shot dead, aged only 40, outside his New York home in December 1980.

Lennon signed the yacht’s log book on June 11, 1980 and stayed in Bermuda until the end of July that summer, renting out a property on Knapton Hill and later one in Fairylands.

Anyone interested in making an offer for the log book should contact Mr. Owen in the UK on (011 44) 7900-825898.

Beatles Memorabilia Brings In Big Bucks

A copy of The Beatles' 1964 album A Hard Day's Night, signed by all four members of the band, has been sold for $41,000 at London auction house Christie's. Other items of memorabilia connected to the Fab Four include a letter from John Lennon to his first wife Cynthia, sent in the 1970s, which was bought for $21,500. The typed note is signed "your famous ex-husband" and features sketches of a face and trees. But another Lennon letter from the same era, to his cousin Leila, failed to attract any bidders, despite being expected to reach up to $27,000. Both correspondences show how Lennon's relationship with Cynthia and their son Julian deteriorated after he struck up a relationship with artist Yoko Ono. Christie's Sarah Hodgson says, "John Lennon and Beatles memorabilia was highly sought-after yet again, with fans and trade alike snapping up rare items." The sale at Christie's follows another auction of Lennon items at Bonhams, also in London, earlier this week. Memorabilia at the Bonhams bidding battle include a signed copy of iconic 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which fetched $25,000.

Earliest known US Beatles concert poster to be auctioned Earliest known US Beatles concert poster to be auctioned

Huntington, NY, June 23, 2006 -- The auction house "It's Only Rock n Roll" broke all the records in December 2004 when they sold a 1966 Beatles concert poster for $132,736.52.

Will they break the record again this year with this one?

This amazing 1964 cardboard poster advertising the Beatles' first visit to Philadelphia has the distinction of being the only-known venue poster produced to promote any of the 25 stops on their North American summer tour of 1964 and, as such, is the earliest known US Beatles concert poster.

How many of these cardboard posters were printed is unknown but we're aware of only three surviving examples. Chances are they were posted at Convention Hall soon after the concert was announced the previous April, but prior to tickets going on sale. The 7 PM start time was later revised to 8 PM.

This poster features a remarkable and striking graphic design, quite unlike the typical "boxing style" concert poster of the time that featured only plain text. The heading text "The Beatles" mimics the famous text style used on the Beatles' drum head and the pictures of the Beatles are the ones used on the 1964 Topps chewing gum boxes and chewing gum wrappers. It was thus designed to be instantly visible and recognizable from a distance. Even today, it attracts instant attention anywhere it is displayed.

No doubt about it - if you are looking for one of the most rare and sought after historical artifacts of the Beatles' very first year of touring the USA, this is the one item you should have.

The auction ends on June 24th at 11:00pm or 5 minutes after the last bid, so there's still time left to register. Be part of Beatles history and bid!

The first guitar that Paul McCartney was taught to play on, a REX acoustic circa 1950's

The actual guitar that Paul McCartney was first taught chords on. This highly significant guitar was owned from new by Ian James, McCartney's good friend from the Liverpool Institute grammar school, where they met in the second year. Ian, an avid guitar player from a very musical family, taught Paul, on many occasions, his first set of chords and how to run the first riffs in the latter part of the 1950's, when Rock and Roll first hit the shores of Liverpool.

Mr James recalls that This is how Paul and I formed a friendship - through music. More so with the arrival of Rock 'n' Roll when we would visit all the travelling fairgrounds around Liverpool to listen to all the latest records being played, he recalls further Paul would come to my house after school and sometimes I would go to Forthlin Road. We would sometimes have a session, with his brother Mike on his set of drums, Paul on piano and me on the guitar. Ian hung out with Paul long before the Quarrymen were even an idea, and recalls he was present, with this guitar on the historical day that McCartney first met Lennon at the Woolton Church fete, he explains I had it on the evening of the Woolton Fete when Paul met John earlier that day and he phoned me to suggest I go to the church that night as they (the 'Quarrymen') were planning to play there. I arrived there and was introduced to John (Lennon). We all practised for a while deciding who should sing what. It was an easy decision. Whoever knew the words would sing the song. But to no avail, the vicar walked in and said the gig was off. I can't remember why. The others decided to go to a local coffee bar and play a few numbers, I think the owner was a relative or friend of John's. But by this time I'd had enough of show-business and decided to go home. Interestingly Mr James also elaborates on the significance of this guitar It's possible John may have handled the guitar that night and it's also more than possible that George (Harrison) may have played it as I went to his house on a couple of occasions to teach him a few chords. He had more of an interest in playing melodies but felt he needed to know some chords. Ian went on to form his own group, The Mateys, in which he continued to use this guitar.

The guitar is a Rex acoustic, of foreign manufacture, serial no. 459 7124, in sunburst finish, laminated wood body with single round cutaway, laminate top with f-holes, twenty fret fingerboard with dot inlays; wooden bridge, metal tailpiece; and a beige soft guitar cover.

The guitar is accompanied by a signed letter from Paul McCartney dated 24 March 2006 on his personal headed paper which reads The above guitar belonging to my old school pal Ian James was the first guitar I ever held. It was also the guitar on which I learnt my first chords in his house at 43 Elswick Street Liverpool 8; a black and white photograph of Ian James with this guitar, taken by Paul McCartney at James' house in Liverpool in 1957 and a colour photograph taken at McCartney's MPL offices in London by Ian James on 24 March 2006 of Paul McCartney with this guitar and the aforementioned photograph of Ian James.

Estimate £ 100,000-150,000

It is well documented in the annals of Beatles history that Ian James was a good school friend of the young McCartney, and that he can be held responsible for being one of the select persons who turned McCartney on to the wonders of music and most notably 'Rock n Roll'. He is mentioned in the Beatles official biography by Hunter Davies, and in fact McCartney himself was quoted in press releases for his 1999 album 'Run Devil Run', when discussing the cover of 'All Shook Up', that featured on the album.

"I have the loveliest memory of All Shook Up. We were mad Elvis fans before he went into the Army. We thought the Army made him a little too grown up, but he was fantastic. Anyway, back in Liverpool me and my best mate, Ian James, who I still know, we used to go around in these draped flecked jackets. We thought they were really cool, that you could not have a more cool item of clothing, and we would wander around the fairgrounds in Liverpool trying to pick up girls. We thought the girls would come flooding to us, us being in these jackets. But of course they never took any notice of us'.

It is telling that McCartney has remained a friend after all these years and is also willing to acknowledge the significance of this particular guitar in being a catalyst to the development of one of the leading musicians of the 20th century. A truly significant instrument and probably the best authenticated Beatles' instrument, or indeed Beatle related item, to ever appear on the auction block - having a signed letter from one of the Fab Four themselves is the ultimate provenance and a rare piece in its own right.

Beatle George's guitar up for saleBeatle George's guitar up for sale
Monday November 20

A guitar played by George Harrison as Beatlemania began to grip Britain is going under the hammer.

The Maton MS500 Mastersound guitar, which Harrison played in 1963, is expected to fetch more than Ј100,000.

The instrument goes on sale on November 30 on the fifth anniversary of the legendary musician's death.

In 1963, The Beatles' debut album Please, Please Me was released and they performed their last set at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. In the summer of that year, The Beatles were on the verge of becoming the biggest band the world had ever known.

Other highlights from the Cooper Owen's Music Legends auction include John Lennon's "favourite" grey shirt, which is expected to fetch Ј8,000. Lennon's shirt, which he also wore in 1963, came into the possession of a fan who found herself locked in a bathroom with the topless star.

After choking on whiskey she had mistaken for ginger ale, Lennon gave her the shirt to keep her warm. The Beatle was then whisked away before she had the chance to return his shirt, but as Lennon disappeared he gestured, "You keep it" and told her it was his "favourite".

Lennon's hand-made hand-painted psychedelic jacket from 1967 is estimated to sell for around Ј45,000

The jacket was made for Lennon by Mick Jagger's brother Chris.

A Sgt. Peppers sleeve, signed by all four Beatles, is expected to fetch Ј40,000.

The auction includes nearly 300 pieces of rock and pop memorabilia and takes place at Air Studios in London. It also includes previously unreleased recordings by the Rolling Stones and a rough version of the very first Jagger/Richards composition.

December 21, 2006 -- It's Only Rock & Roll AuctionDecember 21, 2006 -- It's Only Rock & Roll Auction

Louise Harrison's autographed copy of "Meet the Beatles" sold for $115,228.82

On February 11, 1964 just two days after The Beatles historic first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in New York, the band boarded a train en route to Washington D.C., where they played their first U.S. concert before a paying audience at the Washington Coliseum. On the train with the Beatles were reporters, as well as members of the Beatles entourage including Louise Harrison, George's sister. Midway through the trip, Beatle road manager Neil Aspinall presented Louise with a promotionally stamped copy of the groups' first US release on Capitol records, "Meet The Beatles".

A short while later, right there on the spot, all four band members signed the reverse of the LP cover in black ballpoint pen as follows:

John wrote "To Lou many love from John Lennon X", Paul wrote "To Louise with love from your older brother !! Paul McCartney XXX.", George wrote "To Lou with Love from "Brother" !! George Harrison", Ringo wrote "To Lou Lots of Love Ringo Starr XXX".

All four signatures are excellent and complete examples from this historic time period. This cover has been personally consigned by Louise herself, who has treasured this keepsake from the day it was signed. The cover was recently on display at the Clinton Museum. Louise was interviewed with the album on the Larry King show and a clip is included with this lot. This first issue cover comes with the original accompanying vinyl in VG+ condition. The LP cover itself has some seam splitting and has small front tear at the letter E. On John's signature, the pen has skipped slightly on the letter "h" and also on the first letter "n" in his last name, however the entire signature can be seen. On the tail end of the signature John took the time to go over the final letters and redo the "X".

Such a well documented and personally connected set of Beatles autographs has rarely been offered for sale. The fact that it is on one of the most desirable record jackets to have signed by the band makes this perhaps the ultimate signed Beatles LP. In the history of the hobby, this is only the 9th authentic signed American LP cover to surface according to all the experts and historians, based on documented history of past auctions worldwide and all known private sales. With such impeccable provenance this very well could be the 'Holy Grail' of signed Beatles LP covers. Comes with LOA from Frank Caiazzo.

Beatles items pulled out of auction

BEATLES memorabilia owned by a former Gerrards Cross resident and put up for sale at around ?30,000 was withdrawn from Christie's on Thursday.

A spokesman for the South Kensington auction house said they were unable to disclose any information regarding the withdrawal of the six items given to former EMI chairman Len Woods.

Mr Woods, who lived in Howards Thicket until his death on February 16, 2001, had a number of items given to him by various members of the Beatles between 1964 to 1976.
He worked for the music company for decades, holding a number of different positions, before becoming chairman and was instrumental in signing the Beatles.

The main attraction from the six lots belonging to the Woods' family were two autographed pages of track listings and a brief covering from John Lennon which was expected to fetch up to ?15,000.

This is particularly interesting to Beatle fans as it proves that despite distancing himself from the group in public in the early 70s, Lennon still felt a close attachment to the band.

There were also letters, notes and postcards from George Harrison, Ringo Starr and John Lennon up for grabs ranging between ?400 and ?6,000.

These included an autographed thank you letter from Harrison for the television set he received from Woods for his 21st birthday.

There was also a response from Starr regarding his invitation to EMI's 75th anniversary and a note from Lennon urging Woods to listen to his latest album he made with Yoko.

However they were not all pleasant.

There were critical messages from Harrison and another from Lennon, who was unhappy with the record label over the renewal of his contract.
