Norton to present American Live 8Norton to present American Live 8
31/05/2005

Graham Norton will host the American leg of charity concert Live 8.

The flamboyant 41-year-old is thrilled with the deal - as he was desperate to stay in America after finding success with his Comedy Central show The Graham Norton Effect.

Norton will head to Washington DC for July 2 to front the US leg of the charity rock spectacular - which boasts stars such as Outkast, Alicia Keys and Mary J Blige.

Fellow UK personalities Jonathan Ross and Jamie Theakston will present acts such as U2, Robbie Williams and former Beatle Paul McCartney performing in London's Hyde Park.

An insider says: "The Americans love Graham, so he's a natural for Live 8 - and he'll be fronting a huge show for the BBC."

Bob Geldof will officially reveal the details for both gigs today.

Geldof to announce Live 8 plans Geldof to announce Live 8 plans

Bob Geldof is to reveal plans for a repeat of 1985's Live Aid concert, called Live 8, to coincide with the G8 summit and highlight global poverty.

The event will be held in London's Hyde Park on 2 July with other concerts in the US, Paris, Rome and Berlin.

The aim will be to raise awareness of Make Poverty History, a campaign to get the richest nations to cancel debt and increase aid to developing countries.

The G8 summit takes place from 6 to 8 July at Gleneagles in Scotland.

Geldof said last week: "Once more into the breach. What started 20 years ago is coming to a political point in a few weeks.

"There is more than a chance that the boys and girls with guitars finally get to tilt the world on its axis."

Acts linked with the concert include U2, the Rolling Stones, Sir Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Madonna, Sting and Robbie Williams.

"We're amazed as ever that the artist community has stepped up the table yet again," promoter Harvey Goldsmith told BBC Breakfast.

A Spice Girls reunion has been rumoured, but Mr Goldsmith, who put together the original Live Aid bill and is working on the new concert, said the group had neither been approached nor axed.

Mr Goldsmith said he "certainly would" consider them if they wanted to play.

The original Live Aid took place at Wembley and Philadelphia in 1985
A spokesman for Victoria Beckham said the Spice Girls - whose last hit was in November 2000 - were still in talks with organisers and might confirm their involvement at a later date.

Live 8 would be a "show of strength" to create a "pressure point" on the world leaders' meeting days later, Mr Goldsmith said.

"The whole reason for these concerts this time is different from last time," he said.

"This is an opportunity once and for all for the eight leaders of the world to deal with a continent that's basically dying.

"This is a chance for those leaders to get together and say we can actually make a difference this time."

'Harder'

Live 8 will be organised in about seven weeks, he said - compared with 10 weeks for the original. "It makes it a lot harder," Mr Goldsmith said.

The artists are working with film directors to create footage of Africa to be shown during their sets, he added.

The launch in London on Tuesday is expected to confirm line-up and ticket details. There has been speculation that free tickets will be allocated by a public lottery.

The original Live Aid concerts, on 13 July 1985 in Wembley Stadium and JFK Stadium, Philadelphia, raised £40m for famine relief in Africa.

Five New Live Aid Shows Announced Tue May 31Five New Live Aid Shows Announced Tue May 31

LONDON - London's Hyde Park, Circus Maximus in Rome and the Museum of Art in Philadelphia are among the venues for Live 8, a series of concerts being organized by Bob Geldof, the driving force behind the 1985 Band Aid and Live Aid campaigns for African famine relief.

The July 2 concerts, which will be free, also will be held near the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and in Paris.

"We don't want people's money. We want them," Geldof told a news conference Tuesday. He said negotiations for the Paris venue were continuing.

Performers will include Coldplay, Madonna, Paul McCartney, R.E.M. and U2 in London; Will Smith, Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder and P. Diddy in Philadelphia; Crosby, Stills and Nash, Lauryn Hill and Brian Wilson in Berlin; Jamiroquai, Youssou N'Dour, Yannick Noah and Placebo in Paris; and Duran Duran in Rome.

The events are aimed at raising awareness of poverty in developing countries just days before G8 leaders meet in Britain.

Geldof said the G8 meeting provided a "unique opportunity for Britain to do something unparalleled in the world ... to tilt the world a little bit on its axis in favor of the poor."

Elton John, who sat beside Geldof at the news conference, said he was very proud to be involved."

"Now I'm fully aware of what's going on and seeing the injustices going on," John said. The 58-year-old pop star said he hadn't been mature enough to appreciate the last concert 20 years ago and its ramifications.

With Live 8, Geldof urges G8 to stamp out povertyWith Live 8, Geldof urges G8 to stamp out poverty

LONDON (Reuters) - Charity rocker Bob Geldof on Tuesday announced plans for five star-studded concerts aimed at pressuring world leaders into eradicating African poverty.

Twenty years after the Live Aid sensation, the man dubbed "Saint Bob" for organising the 1985 concert to save the starving in Ethiopia wants to influence the G8 group of industrialized nations which meets in Scotland in July.

"Here we are again," Geldof told a news conference in London, adding that he hoped to use Live 8 concerts "to tilt the world a little bit on in its axis in favor of the poor."

"We don't want your money, we want you, because every few seconds a child dies needlessly of extreme poverty," the Irish singer added.

"Eight world leaders in one room in Scotland on the 8th of July can save millions and millions of lives, but they'll only do it if enough people tell them to."

Five free concerts will be held on July 2 in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome and Philadelphia, organizer Harvey Goldsmith said.

The stars due to appear at the London show include Mariah Carey, Coldplay, Elton John, Madonna, Paul McCartney, REM, Scissor Sisters, Sting, Robbie Williams and U2.

Acts confirmed so far in Philadelphia include Bon Jovi, Maroon 5, P. Diddy, Stevie Wonder and actor Will Smith.

The concerts will coincide with a rally in Edinburgh organized by Make Poverty History, an umbrella group campaigning to cancel poor nations' debt and boost aid that plans to form a human chain around the Scottish city to raise awareness.

RALLY TO PRESSURE LEADERS

Live 8 organizers are hoping for one million spectators at the July 8 gigs and up to two billion viewers around the world.

Philadelphia officials said Live 8 and a separate Elton John AIDS concert on July 4 could attract up to three million people in the city alone.

"I don't think it will be a logistical problem for us," Mayor John Street told reporters in Philadelphia.

Prime Minister Tony Blair has lobbied to help Africa during Britain's presidency of the G8 this year and will host G8 leaders at a summit in Gleneagles in Scotland from July 6-8.

But campaigners fear discord between G8 nations on debt reduction and aid, combined with reluctance in Washington, will wreck Blair's ambitions.

Blair will discuss a range of issues including Africa during talks with President Bush in Washington next week, a spokesman for his office said.

Campaigners also warn that African schools and hospitals could receive no new money from the G8 summit, which could cost as much as 100 million pounds ($180 million) to stage.

"We are really concerned that we're a long, long way away from any kind of breakthrough on tackling poverty in Africa," said Oxfam policy adviser Max Lawson.

Elton John, who has his own AIDS charity, said the latest initiative would mean more to him than Live Aid.

"I went to Africa in January and saw the situation for myself there, and saw the ignorance and stigma that people are fighting against," he said.

"He's (Geldof) encouraged ... musicians to really think about what they should be doing instead of playing and just driving around in flashy cars."

Why Live Aid is happening again

New Live Aid concerts under the Live 8 banner are happening ahead of the G8 summit in July - 20 years after the original Live Aid and weeks after organiser Bob Geldof said another one would happen "over my dead body".

Until now, Geldof has refused to repeat the events of 1985, when the first Live Aid was part of the campaign to combat famine in Ethiopia.

That event was "almost perfect in what it achieved", Geldof said.

"I couldn't see how anything could possibly be better than that glorious day 20 years ago."

But the situation in Africa has not improved and there is now a "unique opportunity" to permanently solve the problem, he says.

Top of Geldof's reasons for returning are figures that estimate 50,000 people in Africa die unnecessarily every day as a result of extreme poverty.

It would take the G8 world leaders - from the world's leading industrialised nations plus Russia - "moments" to solve the problem, he argues.

He is also frustrated at seeing his Commission For Africa report, which was published in March and recommends debt cancellation, increased aid and fairer trade laws, "gather dust on the shelf".

The G8 gathering gives him the perfect opportunity to step up the pressure to get those plans put into action.

The 20th anniversary of the original Live Aid is a fortuitous coincidence.

U2 singer Bono and campaigner Richard Curtis - who wrote films such as Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral - persuaded him to take up the project, Geldof said.

"It seemed to be that we could gather together again - this time not for charity but for political justice," he said.

The concerts in London, Philadelphia, Rome, Paris and Berlin will be free, raising pressure on the leaders instead of money.

Expanding on the reasons behind the concerts, Geldof said more people die of hunger every year in Africa than die of Aids, TB, malaria, polio and conflict combined.

European governments give poor person in Africa 0.65 euros (£0.44) a year each compared with 848 euros (£572) for every surplus cow, he told reporters.

"Still 20 years on, it strikes me as morally repulsive and intellectually absurd that people die of want in a world of surplus," he said.

He urged the public to send a message to leaders that they cared about the issue - and told the leaders they must be prepared to do something.

"We know what it costs. In the global economic scale, it is absolutely nothing," he said.

"We can't live like this. We cannot live like this. We just can't, not at the beginning of this century.

"We've never been wealthier, we've never been healthier, we know what it costs, we know what to do - do it. Do it."

Curtis has been at the forefront of the Make Poverty History campaign and added his voice to the arguments.

Some 70 million people have died of Aids in Africa, he said. "We've got our own private holocaust going on now."

If 50,000 people a day died in Europe, leaders would "find the money to solve that particular problem as they walked from the front door at Gleneagles to the reception", he said.

"It absolutely can be done. In terms of the global scale of finances, it is a tiny amount of money."

Geldof wants a million people to travel to Edinburgh for the summit to make their voices heard, Geldof said.

"What Live Aid did, joyously and enthusiastically, was open up the avenues of possibility," he said. "Finally Live 8 invites you to walk down them."

Former Ultravox singer Midge Ure, who helped organise Live Aid and Band Aid, is among those co-ordinating the gathering in Edinburgh.

It would be "something special", he said, urging everybody to "be part of it" and telling Edinburgh residents to play their part.

"It may never happen again, we may never have the opportunity of having these people on our shores and we can tell them what we want," he said.

"We want people to stand up and be counted. We want every church, chapel, synagogue, mosque to open their doors and let these people in.

"We are big-hearted, we mean well. Let these people into your garage, your spare room, your garden - whatever it happens to be.

"They are going to come, whether we ask them or not, they are going to be there. It's going to be amazing."

12 июля выходит ДВД с лучшими моментами первого Live Aid (хайлайты первого концерта взяты из выпущенной в прошлом году коробки).

Warner Strategic Marketing announced Friday it will release a DVD of 50 minutes of highlights from the 1985 Live Aid concert, distilled from the box set released late last year. The street date for the disc, titled ""LIVE AID 20 Years Ago Today," is July 12. List price will be $9.99 (which means discount retailers will sell it for around $7.99). The disc will feature performances from artists including U2, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Queen, David Bowie, The Pretenders, The Who, Elton John, Santana, Madonna, Tom Petty, Sting and Bob Dylan.

В Оттаве (Parlament Hill) пройдет концерт с участием Bryan Adams, the Barenaked Ladies, Jann Arden и Our Lady Peace.
