Vinyl Gang Productions (VGP)

The Number One Rolling Stones label since 1993. The Japanese VGP has released over 300 titles (as of March 2002) and no sign of stopping yet. Their tapes are always the best possible quality and vinyl sources are seldom used. In 1993/1994 they located and released tapes (both video and audio tapes), which were not even circulating among tape traders. I consider the first 150 titles of the VGP catalogue a must for any serious collector. For the "Bridges to Babylon" tour, and even for some No Security shows, the drive to earn money (thus to be the first to release a show) was stronger than to release the best possible tape. For the important (soundboard or radio) shows VGP corrected the obsolete first releases by upgraded second releases, but if you want the best audience tape available for a given B2B show, do shop around. As of now, VGP is re-releasing old, hard to find releases, which is fine for anyone who missed the original issues. But, for the completists, there are still many good 1975 -1981-audience tapes waiting to be released! VGP is rarely imported, but can be ordered directly from Japan. Some titles are sold out or withdrawn, and can be really hard to find (and expensive too!). The average value for a single CD title is 40 US$, a double CD is worth 60 US$.

Outsider Bird (OBR)

To vinyl collectors Outsider Bird is probably the most sought after label -that is if you all ready have an original copy of The Promotional Album of course! Released from Japan, but originating from Europe, the CD's by Outsider Bird are, except for Honolulu 1973 which is released in better and more complete form by VGP, all valuable for collector's and completists. Released in limited numbered quantities (100 to 500 copies) and packed in deluxe cardboard fold out sleeves, once sold out very hard to find. The average value for a single CD title is 50 US$, a double CD is worth 75 US$.

The Swingin' Pig (TSP)

The Swinging Pig has for long time been the number one European label. Most of their CD's are mastered from tapes and they generally used the best available tape for a particular show. On the downside, on some releases they have used the No Noise Reduction, which takes the dynamics out of the music (the music then sounds bassy and compressed). Some titles are still worth to look for, but most valuable titles have been re-released by Dandelion. The average value for a single CD title is 25 US$, a double CD is worth 40 US$. Some first pressings are more valuable, and will cost approximately US$80 for a double title. First pressings can be recognised by a GEMA mark on the disc, second pressings read OSA, OSA/MONA, OSA/MONADA or OCD/MONADA.

Trade Mark of Quality (TMOQ)

A VGP related label, which mainly released shows dubbed from vinyl, including crackles. Most of their releases can now be found, taken from tape, as Vinyl Gang Production's, but we are still waiting for the Nicaraguan Benefit show without crackles! The average value for a single CD title is 40 US$, a double CD is worth 60 US$.

Idol Mind Production (IMP)

The predecessor of VGP and one of the first Japanese labels to release shows from tape. A great part of the catalogue has been upgraded by releases from other labels (mainly VGP), but some shows can still only be found on the IMP label. These titles (Baton Rouge 75, Vancouver 72, Candlestick Park 81) are really hard to find, and very expensive. The average value for a single CD title is 40 US$, a double CD is worth 60 US$. Some titles can be worth up to US$ 120.

Stone Crazy (SC)

The single most collectable Stones label. Released from Japan but originated in Europe, now out of business, All Stone Crazy titles, except Birmingham 1973, are extremely rare and valuable. Stone Crazy has released three titles in beautiful 12" box package and are worth -if found at all- about US$ 200. The Second Edition's and the Rotterdam Tapes are less expensive: US$ 100. Good luck finding them!

Dandelion (DL)

Dandelion has taken over the Swingin' Pig's spot as number one European label. Releasing a combination of old Swingin' Pig titles, copies of VGP titles and a couple new ones. Generally well regarded but there has been some criticism for using mono broadcast sources and other relatively minor points. As of July 2000 it is unknown if Dandelion still exists due to custom problems. The average value for a single CD title is 25 US$, a double CD is worth 40 US$.

The Shaved Disc (TSD)

The Shaved Disc (TSD) from Japan is generally bad. From their complete catalogue, only one title is not available elsewhere: "London 73 -Thrash in the 70's". All other titles are (badly) copied from other labels. Artwork is horrible and normally full of mistakes like upside down pictures, wrong spelling and erroneous show dates. The price of a Shaved Disc double CD title is generally 60 US$, but most titles are worth a lot less.

Crystal Cat (CC)

The Bruce Springsteen specialised Crystal Cat has released only a few Stones titles. All but one (Shepherds Bush, which is not the best available) are truly excellent audience recordings from the "Bridges to Babylon" tour. The value of a double CD is 45 US$.

Scorpio (--)

The American label Scorpio and its related Gold Standard label has released some new, fine and collectable titles, like Stones Touring Party and A Shot of Salvation. Out of business for about a year, the label now seems to be run by different people. Their latest releases are just copies of old titles and they do not seem to be releasing any new material in the future. The average value for a single CD title is 25 US$, a double CD is worth 40 US$.

Midnight Beat (MB)

Midnight Beat, related to Swingin' Pig and Dandelion, has put out 12 Stones titles. Generally they put a lot of effort in their releases, which makes them sound really good. Both the Acetates, Stars In The Sky They Never Lie and Static In The Attic are necessities to any collector. The average value for a single CD title is 25 US$, a double CD is worth 40 US$.

Vigotone (VT)

Vigotone has released just a few Stones titles, but all worthwhile to look for. Their Paris Outtakes set is still the best available and the original, 11” laminated Voodoo Brew and Voodoo Stew 4 CD box sets (all other variations in packaging are copies!) are classics and very valuable.

Yellow Dog (YD)

Yellow Dog, famed for their Beatles and other releases, has released The Black Box, a 3 CD set of early outtakes in excellent quality. This title has been re-released with bonus tracks by Dandelion. This set is worth US$ 60.

Terappin (TR)

Terappin, once a much sought after and expensive Japanese label, now made obsolete by upgrades on other labels. Still expensive though! The average value for a single CD title is 35 US$, a double CD is worth 70 US$.




I personally find CD-R labels not collectable.
