Indian maestro Ravi Shankar on European farewell tour

PARIS (AFP) — Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar geared up for his last European performance in France Tuesday, despite saying he hoped it would not be his swansong.

The 88-year-old is giving a masterclass at the Salle Pleyel in Paris Tuesday evening, a day after he performed a farewell concert there.

As he entered on stage to a standing ovation Monday night, he said: "My dear friends in Paris. It is supposed to be my last concert here. I hope this is not the case!"

Both performances were delayed by a few months because of Shankar's poor health.

The sitarist, who is credited with promoting Indian music in the West, will head to the United States in October for four more concerts.

Lionised by the former Beatle George Harrison, who called him the godfather of world music, and violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who compared him to Mozart, Shankar gave a virtuoso performance Monday.

The audience, composed of smart fiftysomethings and trendy youngsters, listened intently as Shankar performed alongside his daughter Anoushka, a tabla drum player and two lute players.

Despite needing help to get on stage and not being able to sit cross-legged on the rug positioned on the floor, Shankar had lost none of his musical artistry, performing for 90 minutes over three different parts.

He was also up to his old tricks, slipping the French children's song "Au clair de la Lune" into one of his pieces, while throwing proud glances at his 27-year-old daughter, who has accompanied him on stage since 1995.

George Harrison's widow Olivia was in the audience, and made a presentation to Shankar afterwards. So was Nicolas Godin, from the French electric-pop band Air.

Shankar is India's best-known musician and a three-time Grammy award winner. He was born in Varanasi (also known as Benares) about 670 kilometres (415 miles) southeast of Delhi on April 7, 1920.

He is credited with making Indian music popular in the West, where his eclectic sound is often mixed into pop songs, and he taught the late George Harrison to play the sitar in the 1960s.

His second daughter is the eight-time Grammy award winner, Norah Jones, who rose to fame in 2002 with her debut album "Come Away With Me".

Harrison once said: After `Norwegian Wood', I met Ravi Shankar at a friend's house in London, for dinner. He offered to give me instructions in the basics of the sitar, like how to sit, how to hold it, and the basic exercises. It was the first time I had ever really learned music with a bit of discipline. Then I started to listen to Indian music for the next two years, and hardly touched the guitar, except for recordings. Having all these material things, I wanted something more. And it happened that at just the time I wanted it, it came to me in the form of Ravi Shankar, Indian music, and the whole Indian philosophy.Harrison once said: "After `Norwegian Wood', I met Ravi Shankar at a friend's house in London, for dinner. Рави, впервые после 2007 года дал концерт в это воскресенье.Рави, впервые после 2007 года дал концерт в это воскресенье.

Вот тут небольшое ревью:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/oct/10/ravi-shankar-still-sublime-91/

Very few concert tickets contain the written promise: "An evening of mystical enchantment and emotional bliss." But those were the exact words contained on the tickets for Ravi Shankar's sold-out Sunday night concert at California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

In its best moments, enchantment and bliss are exactly what this seemingly tireless master of Indian music delivered. Both have been Shankar's artistic specialties since even before he achieved worldwide fame in the 1960s -- a decade that saw him mentor then-Beatle George Harrison on the sitar and perform memorably at the now-legendary Monterey Pop and Woodstock festivals. (Shankar is prominently featured in the second part of Martin Scorsese's new Harrison documentary, "Living in the Material World.")

Of course, Shankar is not impervious to the passing of time. Now 91 and sporting a full white beard, the longtime Encinitas resident uses a cane. And, for the first time in memory at one of his area concerts, rather than perform while sitting cross-legged with his sitar in his lap, he sat on a small riser on the stage, his legs fully extended in front of him.

But these were his only visible concessions to age. His 83-minute concert -- Shankar's first here since 2007 -- found him no less able to dazzle and delight than in previous years. While he may walk more slowly, his mind and fingers seem as fleet as ever. His hearing is similarly sharp -- "What was that?" Shankar asked, after an unseen baby cried out from afar, as the maestro was making his introductory remarks to the otherwise hushed audience in the darkened theater.

Most of the five pieces Shankar performed Sunday were carefully constructed to ebb and flow, an approach that enabled him to achieve maximum dynamic tension and release. He chose his moments with care and precision, knowing exactly when to hold back and when to take off.

The concert opened with "Yamun Kalyan," a slow, meditative raga that found Shankar playing long, extended notes that he bent to achieve a deeply contemplative tone. It was followed by the more lively "Khamaj," which built in intensity throughout. During his exuberant solo on this intricately constructed composition, Shankar played double-time and triple-time lines that never sounded rushed, no matter how accelerated the music became.

He also engaged in some quicksilver exchanges with Parimal Sadaphal, who performed on second sitar in place of Shankar's daughter Anoushka (who earlier this year gave birth to her first child and now lives in London with her husband, "Atonement" film director Joe Wright). "Khamaj" clocked in at 24 minutes and Shankar made every one of them count.

While he laid his sitar down for the next piece, a percussion feature, Shankar remained fully engaged, keeping time with his feet and arms, his head turning back and forth as if watching an especially animated tennis match. That "match" came courtesy of tabla players Tanmoy Bose and Samir Chaterjee, who were seated to either side of Shankar. They were joined by flutist Ravichandra Kulur, who for this selection played rapid-fire rhythmic patterns on the khanjira, a small South Indian frame drum.

Bose and Chaterjee at times each sounded like complete percussion ensembles on their own, whether playing deviously complex patterns with their hands or, in the case of Bose and Kulur, at one point singing their drum parts with tongue-defying dexterity.

How to top such virtuosity? Shankar did so, almost effortlessly (although it is the mark of a master to make the near-impossible seem effortless). For the next piece, an untitled raga, he muted the strings of his sitar with a piece of cloth. He then proceeded to perform a six-minute solo that soared from start to finish, with a succession of charged cadenzas -- one more breathtaking than the next -- that would have taxed most musicians one third his age.

Remarkably, this was merely a prelude to "Raga Mallika," the 27-minute extravaganza that concluded the concert. In actuality a series of ragas and traditional Indian folk songs, "Raga Mallika" was full of unexpected twists and turns, as Shankar cued his accompanists with a nod of his head or, sometimes, by switching gears in the middle of a solo to segue into the next segment.

When the piece concluded, the audience responded with a two-minute standing ovation. There was no encore, although the absence of one was not a concession to Shankar's age. He had said all there was to say, for this night at least, with the exceptional musical eloquence and passion that continue to be his trademarks.
Здорово!
