It's the poll for all those who believe they don't write them like that any
more. There is not an Atomic Kitten or a Steps in sight as Radio 2 today
reveals its celebration of the best of British pop.
More than 14,000 listeners to the nation's favourite radio station
registered their vote, timed to coincide with the Queen's golden jubilee,
producing a list of the best numbers performed by a British artist or band
over the last 50 years.
The Beatles scooped five songs with "Yesterday" proving the most popular at
No 6, and "Hey Jude" just behind in seventh place.
But it is the distinctive sound of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen that tops
the poll, echoing its success last month in a vote by 31,000 music fans for
the Guinness World Records British Hit Singles. Procul Harum's "Whiter Shade
of Pale" was in second place with John Lennon's "Imagine" in third in a list
that could have been tailor-made for romantics everywhere.
Love is inescapable, from The Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love" to 10cc's
"I'm Not In Love" and "She Loves You" from The Beatles. And even the rock
numbers are of the gentler persuasion with Led Zeppelin making fifth place
with the great rock classic "Stairway to Heaven".
The DJ Simon Mayo, who is presenting a full rundown of the poll on Radio 2
this afternoon, said Queen were No 1 from the first week of voting and
slowly increased their lead as the weeks went by.
"The Beatles have five songs in the Top 50, plus John Lennon's 'Imagine' and
George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord' at No 47. I would have been surprised if
they hadn't been in there," Mayo said.
"We've got everything in the chart from Matt Monro and Humphrey Lyttelton to
David Bowie, Elvis Costello and Deep Purple, and Petula Clark to Robbie
Williams."
Williams is the youngest representative of the pop world in the chart, which
mostly features stars who originally made their names in the Sixties and
Seventies. His song "Angel" shares the No 25 spot with Clark's "Downtown".
A smattering of hits from the Eighties nudge their way in, including Spandau
Ballet, Duran Duran, and Ultravox making it in at No 50 with "Vienna".
But it is mostly a poll of the survivors, with Shirley Bassey, Cliff
Richard, David Essex and Rod Stewart all passing some kind of test of time.
