CLAPTON: 'I USED SEX TO BOOST MY SELF-ESTEEM'

Veteran rocker ERIC CLAPTON credits meeting his second wife with curing his mixed-up feelings about sex, which he often used to perform just to bolster his low self-esteem.

Clapton changed his attitude to women, who he previously viewed as conquests to keep him company, after forming a friendship with his spouse MELIA McENERY - who he wed in 2002 - before they began dating.

Clapton, 60, says, "I used to identify my self-esteem with sex.

"Girlfriends became a way of avoiding being with myself. I'd see a woman in a room and I'd be magnetised and usually that would be dangerous, because I don't think you can be any good to anybody unless you're OK on your own.

With his wife, Clapton explains, "I started asking her out and we became friends. With her I found I was able to respond to something that was actually good for me."

'Back Home' by Eric Clapton (August 26, 2005)'Back Home' by Eric Clapton (August 26, 2005)
Release date: August 30, 2005
Label: Warner Bros./Reprise/Duck Records

Back Home, the long awaited CD from Eric Clapton, is his first release of original material in five years. Five of its twelve songs were written in collaboration with fellow producer and keyboardist, Simon Clime. Though many longtime Clapton fans may shrug it off as being yet another mediocre and contemporary pop release from the guitar icon, it’s a proficient work, deserving of praise and recognition. Much of the lyrics are about love and family, a way of life Clapton has learned to cherish as of lately.

In addition to his usual players of recent years, such as Doyle Bramhall II on guitar, Andy Fairweather-Low on guitar, Nathan East on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums, the CD also has Simon Clime on keyboards, and guest appearances from John Mayer, Pino Palladino, Vince Gill, Billy Preston, Robert Randolph, Chris Stainton (Spooky Tooth), Steve Winwood, and a slew of other excellent musicians and background vocalists.

Besides its relatively mellow and contemporary manner, the CD displays another trait common with recent Clapton releases; it’s a portrayal of his diverse tastes and influences over the years. Ever since the release of Eric Clapton in 1970, we’ve come to know him as a well-rounded solo artist whose influences pour forth from his own creations, covers as well, sometimes in a baffling and extraordinary manner.

Other than the recent Cream reunion concerts, he had left his British blues behind to savor his remarkable past. His taste for American music spread from early blues to the folkish and earthy styles of Bob Dylan and The Band. Though he often delved into reggae rhythms, contemporary pop as well, he never fully departed from his blues and rock roots. Roots music is what propels Clapton. His love for old Robert Johnson tunes and the more contemporary blues styles of J.J.Cale have been obvious throughout his career. His love for soul, R&B, and gospel is forever noticeable as well.

Back Home is no different.

The CDs opener, ‘So Tired’, is a clever and catchy tune. It thrives on a lazy, J.J.Cale rhythm, yet has that Knopfler lead guitar tone Clapton tends to adopt every now and then, compressed and tubular-like. It's a Simon Clime collaboration, and lyrically is about life as a parent, and is basically a tribute to wives and mothers. He inserts the sound of a baby crying to get that ‘tired’ message across, a feeling all parents know all too well.

‘Say What You Will’ is a mature love song. It has an interesting rhythm to it, reggae yet contemporary. A background horn section and a rhythm guitar utilizing a wah-wah effect give it a pleasant persona all its own.

‘I’m Going Left’ is a Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright composition. It’s an up-tempo, optimistic track, with a satisfying opening lead. The guitar has that recognizable Strat tone.

‘Love Don’t Love Nobody’, a Spinners song, is mellow R&B about heartbreak and the pain caused by lost love. Clapton does a searing solo in this one.

‘Revolution’ is another track driven by a reggae rhythm, yet contemporary in its approach again, in a Clapton sense anyway. As soon as you hear the opening line: “I told you once, I told you twice. You never listen to my advice.’ you may think, ‘I’ve heard that before’. Though the little clip from the Stones ‘The Last Time’ is only a lyrical similarity, I found it interesting that it’s in a song with an old Beatles’ title, also stating, ‘You say you want a revolution.’ This one is also another of the five Clapton, Clime creations.

‘Love Comes To Everyone’ is a George Harrison song, with Harrison-like
slide throughout. Hauntingly familiar, any fan of the late Beatle will
instantly recognize the copped style.

Both ‘Lost And Found’ and ‘Piece Of My Heart’ are Bramhall creations, and are bluesy and gritty.

‘One Day’, written by Vince Gill and Beverly Darnall, is certainly a diversion from typical Vince Gill. It’s sizzling and bluesy. It also features a nice Hammond B-3 sound from none other than Mr. Billy Preston, with a nice electric piano as well. There are some scorching leads throughout. It’s definitely going to age into a classic EC song.

‘One Track Mind’ and ‘Run Home To Me’ are two more Clapton/Clime collaborations. The latter, reminiscent of his earlier ‘River Of Tears’, has an interesting vibrato guitar effect and more Hammond organ.

‘Back Home’, the CD title song, is the closer, and the one sole Clapton composition. It’s acoustic, and like the opener, has a home and family theme.

Back Home proves once again that Eric Clapton is a maturing yet prominent performer. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, because, as I noted above, lovers of that early Cream ‘Gibson into cranked Marshall’ sound, who just can’t get enough of that, won’t be getting it. However, as his friend, George Harrison, once said, ‘All things must pass’. What we are getting here is what Clapton wants to give us, an album that’s as inclusive, mature, and likable as the musician himself.

2. Say What You Will - Clapton/Clime

CD REVIEW
'Back Home' finds Clapton more settled
By Steve Morse, Globe Staff | August 30, 2005

If anyone deserves a happy family life, it's Eric Clapton. He endured a well-publicized nightmare in 1991 when his 4-year-old son, Conor, died in an accidental fall from a Manhattan high-rise. But Clapton is now remarried and has two young daughters, which helps explain the sense of domestic bliss on his new album, ''Back Home," released today.

The record marks Clapton's first original material in four years and signifies a return to the engaging, soul/R&B style he favored in the '80s, with horns and backup singers adding to his ever-exquisite guitar playing.

He outlines his family role in the very first song, ''So Tired," about how ''the babies all need feeding and one of them is teething." Any parent can relate, while many fathers can appreciate the verse: ''Thank God their mama is a natural / She knows exactly what to do." The album later culminates with ''Run Home to Me" about a joyous day spent at the beach with the family, and the title track, with Clapton confessing, ''All I know is I will die if I don't get back home."

Throughout all this upbeat talk, Clapton avoids being maudlin. The album is an honest admission from a former rock renegade (not to mention heroin addict) who has simply found his way back home. He's 60 years old, but better late than never.

One has to root for him, especially when the music is this inspired. Clapton enlists a number of guests -- among them Steve Winwood, John Mayer, and Robert Randolph -- and they contribute low-key but effective cameos. Randolph adds tasty dobro to yet another original love song, ''One Track Mind." And rock legend Billy Preston, who has been in Clapton's touring band, adds some of his funkiest keyboard lines in years.

Another bonus is the quality of the cover songs. The idealism of George Harrison's ''Love Comes to Everyone" now suits Clapton perfectly, as does Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright's ''I'm Going Left." And the Spinners' ''Love Don't Love Nobody" is about the need to work at love. It has Clapton singing in a pleading falsetto that ranks with his finest blue-eyed soul moments.

The album was recorded at the same time as Clapton's blues tribute to Robert Johnson, ''Me and Mr. Johnson," which came out last year. Clapton recently told Billboard that when he got bogged down recording an original song, he would do a Johnson tune for relief, then discovered the Johnson album was ready first. But rest assured that ''Back Home" was worth the wait.

A Review from the Sunday Times UK England:

Pop: New Releases: Eric Clapton: Back Home
DAN CAIRNS

ERIC CLAPTON
Back Home
Reprise/Duck 9362493952

Last year’s Robert Johnson tribute, Me and Mr Johnson, communicated a real sense of fun, a quality sorely lacking in much of Clapton’s solo work in the preceding decade. And with this year’s Cream reunion and, now, Back Home, he confirms the impression of a buffeted but gritty survivor at peace with his past and relaxed about where he’s positioned. The album springs no great surprises: its mix of covers and originals verges on the polite, and the set runs out of steam towards the end. It does shine fresh light, though, on neglected aspects of Clapton’s musicianship: notably, on versions of the Spinners’ Love Don’t Love Nobody and Syreeta’s I’m Going Left, where his voice is almost Bobby Womack-like in its soulfulness and fire. Three stars

Review from New York Daily News.......

Dwelling on the dull

Clapton is 'Back Home,' and back to boring

ERIC CLAPTON
"Back Home"
(Reprise)

It's never a good sign when a singer kicks off an album whining about how tired he is.

The drowsy first track off Eric Clapton's latest CD finds the legendary guitarist bitching about how little shuteye he's getting thanks to a newly expanded family, which includes a baby who's crying out for feeding, older kids who need chauffeuring around and a wife who can't do it all on her own.

Can't a man of Clapton's stature hire decent help? Or maybe he's just trying to mirror the huge portion of his audience made up of boomers forced to seesaw between demanding jobs and needy children. In some ways, Clapton's life blows this schism to herculean proportions. As one of rock's great "journeymen," he has spent most of his life on the road.

Now, on his new CD, Clapton deals with life "Back Home." Unfortunately, rarely does Clapton approach the work/home balance with any complexity or daring. The majority offers idealized "where would I be without you" declarations of familial bliss.

While you can certainly understand Clapton's cherishing of family - given the tragic loss of his son in the '90s - his music lacks the passion to transcend the cliches.

The album is pure Clapton by the numbers. Bluesy ballads dominate, shorn of their roots to fit the anonymous demands of adult pop. The beats are lazy, the arrangements indifferent, the playing perfect to the point of seeming embalmed.

One exception owes its vitality more to friendship than family. In honor of his late friend George Harrison, Clapton revived an obscure number from the ex-Beatle, "Love Comes to Everyone." It was a soulful pop song to begin with, but Clapton makes the melody even more fulfilling.

Otherwise, listeners have to endure pieces like "Run Home to Me," where Clapton watches his kids play on the beach and wishes the scene could last forever. More balanced, and musically engaged, is the title track, whose lyrics find Clapton tacitly acknowledging that the warmth of home only satisfies him because of his ability to escape at will.

Long-suffering Clapton fans who want something more spicy should hold out for an album that captures last May's London reunion shows with his legendary band Cream (out Oct. 4). Either that, or they should try and catch Clapton in concert, where he still fends off most of the slickness that makes his studio albums such bores.

Nashville newspaper:

High five for Clapton

Eric Clapton had intended to release the music on Back Home (Warner Bros/WEA) in 2003 prior to releasing Me and Mr. Johnson, his hit tribute disc of Robert Johnson material. Instead, it’s finally being released this week and represents his first disc of predominantly original music since Reptile in 2001.

Other than good covers of the Spinners’ “Love Don’t Love Nobody” and George Harrison’s “Love Comes To Everyone,” the session highlights Clapton’s trademark blues-tinged guitar licks and serene vocals on cuts ranging from “One Day” (a number co-written by Vince Gill); “Lost and Found”; and “Revolution,” a new foray into reggae that’s not quite as memorable as his cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff.”

Backed by a crew that includes guitarist John Mayer, synthesizer wizard Steve Winwood and organ ace Billy Preston, Clapton has delivered a first-rate, occasionally spectacular project.

Florida newspaper:

ERIC CLAPTON, BACK HOME: Here's the good news: Following a gloriously greasy tribute to bedeviled bluesman Robert Johnson, Slow Hand finally gets around to releasing his first full-length CD of original music in five years. Here's the bad news: If you're expecting a flurry of whiz-bang fretwork and Cream-y pop hooks, you'd be better off wiping the dust from your copy of 461 Ocean Boulevard.

Sad to say, this is what I call brunch music - pseudo-reggae without the ganja burn, blue-eyed soul with the soul - and halfway through the disc, you fully expect to look over your shoulder and see an omelet station. Clapton has said that Back Home is a portrait of his current existence, which means life is good for the guitar god, but it's not particularly interesting.

Clapton still produces unmistakably distinctive sounds with his instrument of choice, the burbles and pops of a man who has mastered his craft, but there's just not enough of it. In fact, he seems to be distancing himself from his solo-heavy past. Go-nowhere opening cut So Tired is about being a sleepy family man up early for feeding time. What, did the kids eat his guitar, too? The pseudo-riddims of the island-accented Say What You Will and Revolution will leave you longing for his incendiary cover of Bob Marley's I Shot the Sheriff.

There are some nice moments here and there: On George Harrison's sweetly peacenik Love Comes to Everyone, Clapton pays tribute his late, great friend, imitating the Beatle's signature slide guitar and then weaving in his own trademark plating. And on the grinding blues of Lost and Found, it comes as a great relief when Clapton's whiskey-ravaged voice starts raging and his fingers start flying all over the guitar. That said, from the sound of Back Home, Clapton needs to get out of the house more. Grade: C

McCartney takes over Cream reunion to grand applauseMcCartney takes over Cream reunion to grand applause

LONDON -- Paul McCartney showed up at the recent Cream reunion in London and took the place of all three Cream members for six songs.

McCartney played guitar, bass and drums and did the vocals to five Cream hits without the help of the group.

Cream guitarist Eric Clapton said, "It takes three of us to make Cream sound great, but all you need is one Paul McCartney to really do it."

Cream bass player Jack Bruce said, "Of course he is great, he has his original liver."

Cream drummer Ginger Baker said, "I thought I was playing, but it was him."

McCartney came to the reunion show unannounced, though there was a bright, new star in the sky just as it became dark in London. Scientists made note of the strange star. Then, when McCartney appeared at the concert, scientists sighed in relief.

"It was obvious when Paul took the stage," said Perkle Michloner, astronomer, "that the atmosphere around Earth was altered by Paul's presence."

McCartney was not supposed to be in London at the time. Reports placed him in Germany, where he was being asked by the German government to write a song about how Germany was sorry about the whole Nazi incident.

But on stage he came, immediately smiling.

"We knew then that we had to let him do some songs all by himself," said Clapton. "After all, it was Paul who really did all the tracks on our album Fresh Cream."

It has long been suspected that Sir Paul McCartney, while in The Beatles, was the true talent behind all of Cream's early records. Now, Clapton admitted to it.

"I wouldn't even know a C progression were it not for Paul," said Eric.

"He taught me there were no strings missing on a bass guitar," said Bruce. "At first, you know, I thought two strings were missing."

"I thought I was playing," said Baker as his head wobbled and he drooled from each side of his mouth.

After Paul handed the instruments back to the original Cream members, the audience sat through just one more song.

"After Paul's magic," said Eric, "why would anyone stay to listen to us any more?"

In the audience, a number of well known classic rockers commented.

"Amazing as always," said Peter Noone.

"Good vocals, too," said Eric Burden.

"My god, is it night time?" said Keith Richards.

"He don't come around much no more," said Gerry Marsden.

"I liked John better," said George Martin.

"We wish he would consider doing a reunion with us," said the remaining members of The Doors.
