Clapton Guitar Brings Record $959,500 at AuctionClapton Guitar Brings Record $959,500 at Auction

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Eric Clapton's favorite guitar for 15 years fetched $959,500 at auction on Thursday, easily eclipsing the record set by the sale of another guitar by the legendary rock musician five years ago.
The Fender Stratocaster, nicknamed "Blackie," was one of 88 guitars and other items Clapton and other musicians donated to raise money for Crossroads Center Antigua, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in the West Indies.

Christie's, the New York auction house handling the sale, had estimated Blackie's price at $100,000 to $150,000

The auction brought in a total of $7,438,624. That's nearly half again the $5 million generated at Christie's 1999 sale, which also benefited Crossroads.

At the 1999 auction, an anonymous bidder paid what was then a record $497,500 for "Brownie," a 1956 Fender Stratocaster that Clapton used on the Derek and the Dominos hit "Layla."

"Blackie" was practically the only guitar Clapton used on stage and in the studio from late 1970 to 1985. A composite of three guitars made in 1956 and 1957, it is on the cover of Clapton's 1977 album "Slowhand," which includes such hits as "Cocaine" and "Wonderful Tonight."

Christie's said it sold all 88 of the selections, most of which were donated by Clapton, 59.

Three other guitars also brought more than $500,000 each.

A Gibson ES-335 that Clapton bought in 1964 and used through stints with The Yardbirds, Cream, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Blind Faith as well as his solo career sold for $847,500 -- more than 10 times the high end of an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.

The 1939 C.F. Martin & Co. acoustic guitar that Clapton played during his famous MTV "Unplugged" appearance in 1992 sold for $791,500. It also had been expected to sell for between $60,000 and $80,000.

A composite Fender Stratocaster, circa 1965, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan used throughout his career sold for $623,500, well above the estimated range of $15,000 to $20,000. It was donated by his brother, Jimmie Vaughan.

Clapton, a longtime Antigua resident who has spoken openly about his recovery from drug and alcohol abuse, founded Crossroads in 1998 and is its chairman of the board.

Eric Clapton: Blues guitar legendEric Clapton: Blues guitar legend

Eric Clapton, one of the most influential guitarists in the history of rock music, has been made a CBE in the New Year Honours list.

Clapton has been described as "an authentic musical genius" for his blues-influenced guitar playing and songwriting in a career spanning 40 years.

During that time he has sold millions of albums and known worldwide fame - but also experienced the pain of drug and alcohol addiction and the tragic death of his son.

Born in Ripley, Surrey, on 30 March, 1945, Eric Patrick Clapton began learning the guitar as a result of his love for blues and US R&B in the shape of artists such as Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley.

He became a serious scholar of the blues, learning about its history, listening to legendary exponents such as Robert Johnson and discovering the work songs of the US deep south.

"It did something to me emotionally," he later said of his affinity with practitioners of the blues sound.

"The blues are what I've turned to, what has given me inspiration and relief in all the trials of my life."

After brief spells with various British blues bands in the early 1960s, Clapton rose to public acclaim in 1964 as a member of The Yardbirds, playing lead guitar at London's Marquee club on the band's first album, Five Live Yardbirds.

He left two years later, unhappy with their pop direction, just before the single For Your Love brought them international fame.

While The Yardbirds would go on to recruit fellow guitar heroes Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, Clapton had joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and would soon emerge at the heart of one of the late 1960s' most important rock bands, Cream.

Co-founded with bass player Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker, Cream combined the era's psychedelic influence with hard-rocking remakes of blues standards such as Crossroads and Born Under A Bad Sign.

Before the decade was over, Clapton and drummer Baker joined multi-instrumentalist Steve Winwood and bassist Ric Grech in the so-called supergroup Blind Faith, recording a number one album that was hailed by critics.

After a spell in Delaney and Bonnie & Friends, Clapton began to test his vocal skills, recording a 1970 solo album and the widely-admired track Layla on an album recorded under the name of Derek and the Dominos.

Throughout the 1970s he enjoyed continued success with a string of solo albums featuring hits such as I Shot the Sheriff and Lay Down Sally.

During the 1980s and 1990s he went on to even greater renown, recording huge-selling albums such as Just One Night (1980), Journeyman (1989) and 1992's MTV Unplugged, which achieved sales of 15 million.

At the height of his fame Clapton was devastated by the death of his four-year-old son Conor, who fell from the 53rd-storey window of a New York City apartment in 1991. Clapton later recorded the song Tears in Heaven in tribute.

He has acknowledged a drug habit that began at art school at the age of 15. By 1969, he was drinking two bottles of vodka a day, and five years later his heroin addiction was costing him £1,500 a week.

He has been sober since 1982 and now raises millions of dollars for his drink and drugs rehabilitation centre in the Caribbean.

A winner of eight Grammys and the only triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Clapton, now 58, married American Melia McEnery, 27, the mother of his daughters Ella and Julie, in Surrey a year ago.

For nine years he was married to Patti Boyd, previously the wife of former Beatle George Harrison and the subject of Layla.

In 1994 he was awarded the OBE for services to music.

ALMOST Ј90,000 PER STRING!

A guitar owned by ERIC CLAPTON has become the most expensive ever sold at auction after fetching $959,500 (Ј526,048) in New York last night.

The Fender Stratocaster, which Clapton called Blackie, went six times over its expected price of $150,000 (Ј83,000) following a frenetic bidding war at Christie's.

The guitar, first used by Clapton in 1973, was bought by the Guitar Center - a US chain of shops. Proceeds will go towards Clapton’s Crossroads addiction clinic.

It was a night of massive sales. The Guitar Center also bought Clapton's 1964 cherry-red Gibson ES-335 for $847,500 (Ј465,150) - more than 10 times its $80,000 (Ј43,892) estimate. And an acoustic guitar he played during his MTV Unplugged appearance in 1992 sold for $791,500 (Ј434,356).

A staggering $7.4m (Ј4.03m) was raised during the auction – which also saw donated guitars from Brian May, BB King and Pete Townshend.

"I am thrilled at the result which is going to be of enormous help to us in achieving our long-term aims at the centre," said Clapton.

Clapton made Blackie from a number of different Stratocasters originally bought in Nashville, Tennessee. He decided to "retire" it when it began wearing out in 1991.

"I feel that that guitar has become part of me," he said Clapton. "It is still playable. It's immensely playable, but I suppose I was concerned that I was probably doing it more harm than good.

Auctioned Clapton Axes To Tour U.S.

"Blackie," the 1950s-era Fender Stratocaster owned by Eric Clapton and auctioned for a record $959,500 last week at Christie's in New York, was acquired along with a handful of other historic instruments by musical instrument/pro audio retailer Guitar Center.

"These guitars are so much a part of rock 'n roll history that we do not want to see them in the hands of private collectors," Guitar Center chairman Larry Thomas says in a statement. "Guitar Center wants to insure that fans will still have a chance to see them up close and in person. We are developing a plan for them to travel around the country and be on display free to the public."

"Blackie" was used extensively by Clapton from 1970 through 1985, and is pictured on the cover of his 1977 "Slowhand" album. The guitar is a composite of three instruments made in 1956 and 1957.

Clapton and other musicians donated instruments for the auction to raise money for Crossroads Centre Antigua, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in the West Indies. The auction raised $7,438,624.

Guitar Center also acquired Clapton's Gibson ES-335, purchased in the early 1960s and used on Cream's 1968 recording of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads," for $847,500. The retailer also bought Clapton's 1966 Martin 00-21, a gift he received from the late George Harrison, for $89,625.

In addition, Guitar Center acquired the late Stevie Ray Vaughan's 1965 composite Stratocaster, dubbed "Lenny," for $623,500. Vaughan purchased "Lenny," named for his then-wife, in the 1970s and used it until his death in 1990.

Clapton is in the midst of a North American tour in support of his latest Reprise album, "Me and Mr. Johnson." The trek plays the second of three shows tonight (June 29) at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Review: Clapton plays up artistry of blues -- period
Star Tribune July 19, 2004

Who thinks Eric Clapton wimped out?

C'mon, raise your hands.

Who prefers Clapton's quieter, more contemplative stuff like "Tears in Heaven,"My Father's Eyes" and the unplugged version of "Layla"?

Raise your hands.

If you were in the latter group, you probably would have been disappointed by Clapton's concert Sunday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Not only did he not play "Tears,"Father's Eyes" or "Change the World" but he returned to the original rockin' rendition of "Layla."

On Sunday, Clapton was mostly the born-again, bespectacled, bearded, blue-jean wearing bluesman, who also flexed his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame heavyweight guitar credentials. The king of economic virtuosity on guitar was assertive and generous this time. It was a quite exceptional, often emotional, sometimes stirring and remarkably energetic two- hour performance -- better than anyone had the right to expect given Clapton's laid-back approach (let's not say wimpiness) for the last few decades. At 59, Clapton is still a guitar monster.

Since his most recent CD is a tribute to blues pioneer Robert Johnson, it was not surprising that Clapton had his blues mojo working. (Blues is his first calling as a musician, he has said.) In fact, with seven backup musicians and singers, the frontman came across as the leader of a democratic big-band lounge-blues group, allowing the sidemen substantial solo opportunities, occasionally at the expense of his own time in the spotlight.

During a sit-down, five-song mostly acoustic set of Johnson tunes, Clapton suddenly became possessed, with the blues inhabiting his singing like never before. The high-pitched moan, the low-down slurs, the liberating shout. His singing sounded otherworldly on the ferocious "If I Had Possession over Judgment Day," with his stinging slide guitar matching the overpowering emotion of his voice.

Clapton carried on with electrifying fervor with his rave-up rock guitar on Derek & the Dominos' "Got to Get Better in a Little While," and then he made the 15,613 fans feel the pain of longing for a lady -- with his voice and soaring guitar -- on "Have You Ever Loved a Woman?"

The superstar switched to joy for the sweet "Wonderful Tonight," Clapton's concession to cuddlers. "Layla," during which he coaxed both joy and pain out of his guitar, was Clapton's concession to second guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, who got too many of the guitar solos. By contrast, opening act Robert Randolph (who was an exciting gospel showman with Hendrix-like chops and bravado during his own set) on pedal steel guitar was a welcomed addition on Clapton's encores, turning Cream's cluttered "Sunshine of Your Love" into a raucous roof-raiser and inspiring the frontman on Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Workin' " to get his guitar mojo working overtime.

One Noght Stand очень люблю, а из студийных - Another Ticket.

Спасибо огромное полез изучать, есть еще один интересный бутлег "Almost Cream" - Oh Boy с концертом Bottom Line, New York 07.12.1989, данные утверждают, что во втором отделении вылезли и Джек Брюс, и Бейкер.

Clapton masterminds outfitter's relaunch

Rock star Eric Clapton has been "moonlighting" as the co-owner and design director of a gentleman's outfitters in London.

The 59-year-old acquired a 50% stake in Cordings of Piccadilly in December. For the past seven months he's been supervising its relaunch as the home of traditional country clothing.

Clapton said he bought into the company because he liked its classic shirts and tweed shooting jackets and wanted to be able to go on buying them.

Speaking from the US, where he has been on tour since June, Clapton said: "I wanted to help preserve Cordings for myself. And I would like to ensure its future for the people who still like to buy beautiful country clothes."

Cordings was the originator of such classics as the Covert coat and the Tattersall shirt, and made riding boots for the Queen Mother, the Duke of Windsor and Mrs Simpson.

Clapton added: "My favourite Cordings pieces are their tweed shooting and hacking jackets. I like to aspire to elegance, but never achieve it. I can find the right clothes but can't do anything about my face."

A women's collection will be launched this month, says the Daily Telegraph.
