John Lennon's jukebox is a jukebox – specifically a KB Discomatic made in the UK using a Swiss made mechanism – which Lennon had bought in 1965. Lennon filled it with forty singles to accompany him on tour. John Lennon's jukebox also refers to the compilation CD album closely based on the jukebox's musical contents.

The jukebox surfaced in an auction of Beatles memorabilia at Christie's, and was sold for £2,500 ($4,907) to Bristol-based music promoter John Midwinter. Midwinter spent several years restoring the box and researching the discs, which had been catalogued in Lennon's handwriting.[citation needed] As Midwinter's health began to deteriorate, he became anxious that a story of the jukebox and its music should feature in a documentary. Eventually, The South Bank Show broadcast a documentary on the jukebox in 2004 in which many of the represented artists, along with Sting, were interviewed. The project (which was commissioned only a few days after Midwinter died) was managed by Steve Jansen for the British television production company Initial, headed by Malcolm Gerrie.

The 2004 Compilation album named John Lennon's Jukebox contained thirty-four of the singles' A-sides and seven of their B-sides. The album contains several songs that are believed to be part of John Lennon's original choice. The album is subtitled: "a collection inspired by music from his own collection"; and some of the songs on the album are different versions from the ones that could have been included in the jukebox. For instance, the version of "Some Other Guy" by The Big Three, was not the one that was in the original jukebox; instead it was a mid-1970s recording by the same group in the style of the Richie Barrett original (including the use of an electric piano).

Горячий ритм-энд-блюзовый номер Уилсона Пикета из числа "грейтест хитсов". Автор и исполнитель производил сильное впечатление на Джона. Поминался в связи партией лид-вокала You Can't Do That.
На мой взгляд центральный номер в репертуаре The Commitments как и в фильме Алана Паркера.

Wilson Pickett - In The Midnight Hour

"In the Midnight Hour" is a song originally performed by Wilson Pickett in 1965 and released on his 1965 album of the same name, also appearing on the 1966 album The Exciting Wilson Pickett. The song was composed by Pickett and Steve Cropper at the historic Lorraine Motel in Memphis where Martin Luther King, Jr. would later be assassinated in April 1968. Pickett's first hit on Atlantic Records,[1] it reached number one on the R&B charts and peaked at number 21 on the pop charts.[2]
In 2017, the song was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant."

Wilson Pickett version

Wilson Pickett recorded "In the Midnight Hour" at Stax Studios, Memphis, May 12, 1965. The song's co-writer Steve Cropper recalls: "[Atlantic Records president] Jerry Wexler said he was going to bring down this great singer Wilson Pickett" to record at Stax Studio where Cropper was a session guitarist "and I didn’t know what groups he'd been in or whatever. But I used to work in [a] record shop, and I found some gospel songs that Wilson Pickett had sung on. On a couple [at] the end, he goes: 'I'll see my Jesus in the midnight hour! Oh, in the midnight hour. I'll see my Jesus in the midnight hour.'" and Cropper got the idea of using the phrase "in the midnight hour" as the basis for an R&B song. More likely, Cropper was remembering the Falcon's 1962 song "I Found a Love," on which Pickett sings lead and says "And sometimes I call in the midnight hour!" The only gospel record Pickett had appeared on before this was the Violinaires' "Sign of the Judgement," which includes no such phrase.
Besides Cropper the band on "In the Midnight Hour" featured Stax session regulars Al Jackson (drums) and Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass). According to Cropper, "Wexler was responsible for the track's innovative delayed backbeat", as Cropper revamped his planned groove for "In the Midnight Hour" based on a dance step which Wexler demonstrated in the studio - "(quote Cropper) this was the way the kids were dancing; they were putting the accent on two. Basically, we'd been one-beat-accenters with an afterbeat; it was like 'boom dah,' but here was a thing that went 'um-chaw,' just the reverse as far as the accent goes."
"In the Midnight Hour" reached number one on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine dated August 7, 1965 and crossed over to the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 reaching number 21: however according to Stax owner Jim Stewart the domestic sales total of the single in its original release was a moderate 300,000 units. However "In the Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett has become an iconic R&B track, placing at number 134 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time, Wilson Pickett's first of two entries on the list (the other being "Mustang Sally" at number 434). It is also one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, Pickett's only such entry. The song is currently ranked as the 175th greatest song of all time, as well as the eleventh best song of 1965, by Acclaimed Music. Pickett re-recorded the song for his 1987 album American Soul Man.

Еще один крупнейший хит рб звезды - Фонтелла Бэйсс - "Спаси меня". Перекликается тематически с Help Джона, но вышла позже 25 сентября 1965 года.

Rescue Me (Fontella Bass song)

"Rescue Me" is a rhythm and blues song first recorded and released as a single by Fontella Bass in 1965. The original versions of the record, and BMI,[2] give the songwriting credit to Raynard Miner and Carl William Smith, although many other sources also credit Bass herself as a co-writer. It would prove the biggest hit of Bass's career, reaching #1 on the R&B charts for four weeks and placing at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Rescue Me" also peaked at number eleven on the UK Singles Chart.
Original recording
According to writer Robert Pruter in his book Chicago Soul, the song emerged from a songwriting and rehearsal, or "woodshedding", session at Chess Records:[9] " 'Rescue Me' was a terrific example of the Chess studio system at its finest... One Saturday in August 1965, Bass was sitting in a rehearsal studio with producers-writers Carl Smith and Raynard Miner. They were fooling around with the song when arranger Phil Wright walked in, and the ensuing four-way jam session brought forth 'Rescue Me'. [Billy] Davis produced the side..." Bass claimed that, although Smith, Miner and Davis had assured her that her contribution to authorship of the song's lyrics would be acknowledged, this was never done.
Bass recorded the song in three takes at Chess Studios in Chicago. Minnie Riperton provided background vocals, and Maurice White and Louis Satterfield, later of Earth, Wind & Fire, were on drums and bass respectively. Other musicians on the record included Pete Cosey and Gerald Sims on guitar, Leonard Caston (later a producer at Motown) on piano, Sonny Thompson on organ, and Charles Stepney on vibes. According to Bass, the call-and-response moans heard in the song's fade were unintentional. In an interview with The New York Times in 1989, she said, “When we were recording that, I forgot some of the words... Back then, you didn’t stop while the tape was running, and I remembered from the church what to do if you forget the words. I sang, ‘Ummm, ummm, ummm,’ and it worked out just fine.”

Главный хит Miracles, сочиненный их солистом Смоки Робинсоном вместе с басистом Питом Муром и гитаристом Марвом Тарплином.

"The Tracks of My Tears" is a song written by Smokey Robinson, Pete Moore, and Marv Tarplin. It is a multiple award-winning 1965 hit R&B song originally recorded by their group, The Miracles, on Motown's Tamla label. In 1967, Johnny Rivers covered the song and his version was a number 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Linda Ronstadt recorded a hit cover of her own in 1975 that reached number 25 on the Hot 100 chart. Numerous other artists have recorded the song over the years.

Background

"The Tracks of My Tears" was written by Miracles members Smokey Robinson (lead vocalist), Pete Moore (bass vocalist), and Marv Tarplin (guitarist).

In the five-LP publication The Motown Story, by Motown Records, Robinson explained the origin of this song in these words: "'Tracks of My Tears' was actually started by Marv Tarplin, who is a young cat who plays guitar for our act. So he had this musical thing [sings melody], you know, and we worked around with it, and worked around, and it became 'Tracks of My Tears'." Tarplin's guitar licks at the song's intro are among the most famous in pop music history.

"The Tracks of My Tears" was a number 2 hit on the Billboard R&B chart, and it reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. On initial release in the UK in 1965 it did not chart, but like several other Motown singles reissued there in 1969, it became a Top Ten hit in the summer, reaching No. 9, credited to "Smokey Robinson and the Miracles". This song is considered to be among the finest recordings of The Miracles, and it sold over one million records within two years, making it The Miracles' fourth million-selling record

Кавер-версия 65 года хита вокальной соул-группы Temptations 64 года, исполненная Отисом Реддингом для альбома "Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul".

"My Girl" is a soul music song recorded by the Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) record label. Written and produced by the Miracles members Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, the song became the Temptations' first U.S. number-one single, and is today their signature song. Robinson's inspiration for writing this song was his wife, Miracles member Claudette Rogers Robinson. The song was included on the Temptations 1965 album The Temptations Sing Smokey. In 2018, it was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant.

"Раз-два-три" - белый соул, хит Лена Барри, сочинившего его вместе Джоном Медора и Дэвидом Уайтом. Представители Мотауна обвинили авторов в плагиате песни "Ask Any Girl" группы The Supremes. В результате суда в конце концов выторговали себе 15 процентов от прибыли хита.

"1 - 2 - 3" is a 1965 song recorded by American blue-eyed soul singer Len Barry, who co-wrote the song with John Medora and David White. The recording's chorus and accompaniment were arranged by Jimmy Wisner. The single was released in 1965 on the American Decca label. The writers were sued by Motown Records at the time, claiming that the song is a reworking of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Ask Any Girl" released by The Supremes as the B-side to their single "Baby Love" the year before. They denied the claim, but after two years of litigation, agreed to give the Motown writers 15% of the song's writing and publishing royalties. Holland-Dozier-Holland are listed as co-authors by BMI.

The personnel on the original recording included Vinnie Bell, Bobby Eli, and Sal Ditroia on guitar, Joe Macho on bass, Artie Butler on percussion, Leon Huff on piano, Artie Kaplan on sax, Bill Tole and Roswell Rudd on trombone, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Fred Hubbard on clarinet, and Bobby Gregg on drums..

"1-2-3" reached number two in the US Billboard chart, ("I Hear a Symphony" by The Supremes kept it from the number one spot). "1-2-3" also went to number 11 on the Billboard R&B chart. Overseas, the song peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart. In addition, it was also a Top 10 hit in both Australia, where it went to number seven, and in Ireland, where it went to number eight.[citation needed] It sold over one and three quarter million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.

Главный хит черного певца Томми Такера - Hi Heel Sneakers очень влиятелен в мире блюза и рок-н-ролла. Его каверили огромное количество очень разных исполнителей: Элвис, Чак Берри, Джерри Ли Льюис и др.

Hi-Heel Sneakers

(1964)

"Hi-Heel Sneakers" (often also spelled "High Heel Sneakers") is a blues song written and recorded by Tommy Tucker in 1963. Blues writer Mary Katherine Aldin describes it as an uptempo twelve-bar blues, with "a spare, lilting musical framework", and a strong vocal. The song's rhythmic approach has also been compared to that of Jimmy Reed. Tucker's lyrics recall the time he spent as a Golden Gloves boxer in the 1950s:

Put on your red dress baby
Lord we're goin' out tonight
And wear some boxin' gloves
In case some fool might wanna fight

Tommy Tucker's original recording reached number one on the Cash Box R&B Locations chart and number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2017, the song was inducted into the Blues Foundation Blues Hall of Fame as a "classic of blues recording". The panel noted that Tucker's single was "the last blues record from the mighty Chess Records [Checker was a subsidiary] catalogue to hit No. 1 on the charts."

The song came out of Tucker's association with producer Herb Abramson, who was a co-founder of Atlantic Records.[ Abramson operated A-1 Sound Studios in New York, where many popular R&B artists recorded; he leased Tucker's recording to Checker Records, which released it as a single in 1964. Although writers cite a 1963 recording date, there is conflicting information about the studio location. Aldrin puts it in Chicago, while the Blues Foundation locates it in New York City. The song's distinctive guitar parts are provided by Dean Young. Writing in Encyclopedia of the Blues, Gene Tomko notes the similarity to the introduction and shuffle beat of the popular Jimmy Reed song "Big Boss Man".

Numerous musicians have recorded "Hi-Heel Sneakers" – Aldin notes the song "has the distinction of having been recorded by such unlikely musical bedfellows as Johnny Rivers, Elvis Presley, Ramsey Lewis, Jose Feliciano, Chuck Berry, the Chambers Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis , David Cassidy and Boots Randolph, to name but a few." Tomko explains its influence:

This now-familiar rhythmic chord progression of accenting the beat a la "Hi-Heel Sneakers" was in turn incorporated into many cover versions of "Big Boss Man," and ironically influenced how the Jimmy Reed standard is typically played today.

In 2017, Tommy Tucker's single was inducted in to the Blues Hall of Fame.

Timmy Shaw - Gonna Send You Back To Georgia

Timmy Shaw's only chart record was "Gonna Send You Back To Georgia", which reached no.41 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1964. It was issued by Wand Records. Co-written by Hammonds and Matthews, the song was originally titled "A City Slick", and had first been released as the B-side of "I'm A Lonely Guy" on the Audrey label. His backing group is named on the label as the Sternphones. The song was covered by the Animals as "Gonna Send You Back to Walker"; Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, was singer Eric Burdon's birthplace. John Lennon was also known to be an admirer of the Shaw recording; it was part of John Lennon's jukebox.

Contours - First I Look At The Purse
Contours - First I Look At The Purse

"First I Look At the Purse" (G7044) is a 1965 song recorded by R&B group The Contours on Motown Records' Gordy label. It was written by Miracles members Smokey Robinson and Bobby Rogers, the authors of the Temptations' very first hit single, "The Way You Do the Things You Do". This song reached #57 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the Top 20 on Billboard's R&B chart, peaking at #12.

The song received some added attention when it was covered by The J. Geils Band on their self-titled debut album in 1970. The song has also been covered by David Bromberg, Rod Stewart, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, The Cortinas and Nashville Pussy.

"First I Look at the Purse" was the last Contours hit featuring original lead Billy Gordon. It also features the renewed line-up of Contours, as several original members had left back in 1964. Shortly after its release, Gordon departed the group, and Motown, for good, due to personal problems. He was replaced with Joe Stubbs, brother of lead singer of fellow Motown group The Four Tops, Levi Stubbs.

Bobby Parker - Watch Your Step

"Watch Your Step" is a song written and recorded in 1961 by rhythm and blues guitarist Bobby Parker. The song spent several weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 51 during the week of July 15, 1961.

Original release

The song was written by Parker, inspired by Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca" and Ray Charles' "What'd I Say". Parker said "I started playing [Gillespie's] riff on my guitar and decided to make a blues out of it." The record was released on the V-Tone record label, a small enterprise that had been started in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Venton "Buddy" Caldwell.[3][unreliable source?]
Influence

The single was released in the UK, and had influence far beyond its modest commercial success. It was covered by various artists including Adam Faith, Manfred Mann, and the Spencer Davis Group. In particular, its main riff served as the inspiration for several songs by the Beatles, most notably "I Feel Fine" and "Day Tripper". In The Beatles Anthology, John Lennon said: "'Watch Your Step' is one of my favourite records. The Beatles have used the lick in various forms. The Allman Brothers used the lick straight as it was." The Allman Brothers song he refers to is "One Way Out", originally written and recorded by Elmore James.

Led Zeppelin also used the riff as the basis for their instrumental, "Moby Dick".[5] Others, including the Yardbirds ("I’m Not Talking", 1965),[clarification needed] Deep Purple ("Rat Bat Blue", 1973), Gamma Ray ("New World Order", 2001) and Mahjongg ("Tell the Police the Truth", 2008) were inspired by the riff.

Derek Martin - Daddy Rollin' Stone
Derek Martin - Daddy Rollin' Stone

Derek Martin was born in Detroit in 1938, and like many early R&B and soul singers, he got his start in gospel. His professional break came early when he was hired at the age of 17 to sing with Duke Ellington. In the early '50s Martin joined the singing group the Pearls along with fellow singer Howard Guyton and pianist Dave Clowney (who would find success in 1959 with the novelty hit "The Happy Organ" as Dave "Baby" Cortez), and the group released its first single (as the Five Pearls) in 1954 and also recorded as Howie & the Sapphires, releasing a single under that name in 1959 for OKeh Records. Eventually the group changed its name to the Top Notes and recorded for several imprints, including Tuba, Sue, and Roulette as well as putting out a single 45 for Stax, the enduring "Soul Power"/"Sly Girl." The Top Notes also released the original version of "Twist & Shout" in 1961 as the B-side to "Always Late" for Atlantic Records, and it was the Top Notes' version that formed the template, albeit amped up, for the Isley Brothers' later hit rendition of the song. Martin launched his solo career in 1963 with a successful cover of Otis Blackwell's "Daddy Rolling Stone" on Crackerjack Records, and just missed hitting the Top 20 pop and R&B charts with the single "You Better Go." For several years now, Martin has made his home in France, where he is rightfully lauded as a master soul singer, having earned the nickname "the Golden Voice." EMI collected his Roulette releases for 2007's Take Me Like I Am: The Roulette Recordings.
