'Blood On The Tracks' Musicians Reunite

In late 1974, a studio in south Minneapolis took center stage in Bob Dylan's musical life -- the re-recording of half of the songs on his "comeback" album, "Blood on the Tracks." It was, as those who were there like to quote the song, a simple twist of fate that brought them together to help energize one of Dylan's most critically acclaimed and biggest-selling releases.

"This was a whole bunch of coincidences, beginning in New York ... that conspired to bring together a masterwork," says Kevin Odegard, who played guitar on the Minneapolis sessions. Nearly 30 years later, those musicians remain largely anonymous and still uncredited on the album sleeve. But that anonymity is about to end.

A new book, "A Simple Twist of Fate: Bob Dylan and the Making of `Blood on the Tracks,'" by Odegard and British rock journalist Andy Gill, hit the shelves in February. The Minneapolis musicians will reunite to perform the album from start to finish March 3 at the Pantages Theatre in downtown Minneapolis. They'll be joined by Eric Weissberg, known for the 1973 hit "Dueling Banjos," who performed on the album's New York sessions.

The following night, the musicians will play and discuss the recording at the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis. Don't expect Dylan to be there for the concert, though, as he's scheduled to perform that night in St. Louis. He did not respond to a request for an interview.

"Blood on the Tracks" came at a crucial time for Dylan, who had returned to Columbia Records after a stint with Asylum. His marriage to Sara Lowndes was breaking up, and the songs on "Blood on the Tracks" are mainly about love and loss. "This is the meatiest piece of work he has ever done," Odegard says. "He was in a lot of personal anguish."

"Tangled Up in Blue," Dylan's jangly reminiscence about a lover and the 1960s when there was "music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air," is among the songs from the Minneapolis sessions that made the album, and remains a Dylan concert staple.

A lover of folk music, Odegard had recorded two albums in the 1970s when he got a call from his friend and manager -- David Zimmerman, Dylan's younger brother. Zimmerman was looking for a rare 1930s Martin guitar, the type favored by singer Joan Baez. "Right away my antenna went up," Odegard says. He contacted his friend Chris Weber, who owned a guitar store near the University of Minnesota. By coincidence, Weber had received a similar guitar on consignment. Odegard swore Weber to secrecy -- the guitar was for Dylan.

They headed across the Mississippi River on Dec. 27, 1974, to Sound 80, a studio in a working-class neighborhood where guitarist Leo Kottke and singer Cat Stevens had recorded. In walked Dylan, quietly, "just like one of the guys," Odegard says.

"He wasn't ultra-strange and scary and standing in the corner and people walking on tiptoes," Weber remembers. The rock poet -- a "curly haired kid," 34 years old at the time -- stuck out his hand and said, "Hi, I'm Bob Dylan," Weber says.

Weber says he showed Dylan the guitar in a cramped vocal booth, and -- at Dylan's invitation -- played a couple of his own songs for the songwriter of his generation. Dylan began teaching Weber "Idiot Wind." Weber thought he was just a "fifth wheel" at the session and was about to retreat when Dylan gave him a "funny look" and said, "I need you to play guitar."

"So that's when my heart really jumped out of my chest," Weber says. Dylan had recorded "Idiot Wind" in New York City that September at sessions overseen by producer Phil Ramone. But Dylan sounds venomous as he denounces a former lover in the Minneapolis version of "Idiot Wind" that ended up on the album.

Odegard credits the liveliness of the Minneapolis versions to the rhythm section of drummer Bill Berg and bassist Billy Peterson, known for their jazzy style. Peterson, who went on to tour with rocker Steve Miller, praises Dylan's spontaneity. After a few rehearsals with musicians who were hearing the songs for the first time, Dylan would quickly record them. "He was a genius, man," Peterson says. "He captured the creative process. He never belabored it."

"I think we hit a mark because he was just full of feelings and emotions and lyrics were just streaming out of him," says Berg, who grew up in Dylan's hometown of Hibbing and later became a Disney animator.

Dylan held another session with the Minneapolis crew three nights later. In early 1975, "Blood on the Tracks" was released and garnered reviews that hailed it as Dylan's best work in years. But the Minneapolis musicians weren't credited on the initial pressings of the album sleeve, and nobody has bothered to amend the credits since, said Gill, co-author of "A Simple Twist of Fate."

"Hopefully our book will redress the situation ... and accord the musicians their due," he said in an e-mail. While he's disappointed he's not credited, guitarist Weber says he holds no grudges: "I was honored and pleased that a simple twist of fate came my way."

Reggae artists pay tribute to the other Bob

Some of the world's top reggae acts have recorded their versions of Bob Dylan songs for a new tribute album.

Is It Rolling, Bob will feature 16 tracks including Gregor Isaacs performing his version of Mr Tambourine Man.

The man behind the album, Gary Himelfarb, aka Dr Dread, told the Jamaica Observer: "Bob Dylan has always been my favourite artist, he was a voice of the oppressed in the 1960s just as Bob Marley was a voice of the oppressed in the 1970s."

Tracks for the album, due on Sanctuary/RAS Records this summer, were recorded at Jamaica's Music Works studio, at Ariwa Studios, London, and in Washington DC.

The backing band included drummer Sly Dunbar, keyboard player Robbie Lyn and guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith.

Other Dylan classics covered include The Times They Are A-Changing by Apple Gabriel, A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall by Billy Mystic, Maggie's Farm by Toots Hibbert and Blowing In The Wind by Don Carlos.

Dylan previously flirted with reggae on his 1983 album Infidels which featured the legendary reggae rhythm section of drummer Sly Dunbar and bass player Robbie Shakespeare.

Тут довелось глянуть фильм "Masked and anonymous"... Ужас! Досмотреть не смог толком - просто промотал до концовки... Я не понимаю зачем Бобу это надо было?! Известности это ему не прибавит :)

При весьма простом сюжете, фильм сильно затянут, а надежда на обилие музыки Дилана не оправдалась - музыки в исполнении Дилана (а Боб играет старого известного рокера, которого выпустили из тюрьмы, чтобы он сыграл в пафосном концерте) звучит мало и при этом не полностью (ее прерывывают диалоги).
Фильм действительно позиционируется как комедия, таковой не являясь. Конечно в нём есть некоторые типа смешные моменты, но я бы отнес фильм к этакой абсурдной драме.
В общем, сильно я разочарован :(

Dylan goes eclectic, appears in Victoria's Secret TV ad

Forget Janet Jackson: The most controversial pop star on television right now is Bob Dylan, who made his first appearance in a television commercial last week -- for Victoria's Secret.

The spot, which first aired during Tuesday's "American Idol" broadcast, was shot at the Palazzo in Venice and features the '60s counterculture icon singing a remix of his 1997 song "Love Sick," flocked by scantily clad models with feathery angels' wings affixed to their backs. The 62-year-old sports a John Waters-like pencil moustache and eyeliner in the commercial.

Dylan fans immediately flooded Internet chat rooms to express outrage in impassioned rants, while the New York Post flatly labeled him its "sellout of the week."

According to Victoria's Secret Creative Director Ed Razek, the unlikely idea of having the former Robert Allen Zimmerman hawking lingerie came straight from the company Chairman and CEO Les Wexner.

"We had done some spots last year with Dylan's music, and they got a great response," Razek said Friday. "So Les asked, 'Do you think Dylan would do a commercial?' It was a stunningly bold idea. We called his management, they found a two-day hole in his schedule, and off we went to Venice."

While Dylan was unavailable for comment, Claire Mercuri, vice president of media relations at Columbia Records, said the label had no trouble with Dylan's side project: "We think this is a great way to reach people with Bob's music. We're thrilled that he said 'yes' when we asked him to be in the commercial."

In addition to the commercial -- Dylan's first in his 40-year career --

Victoria's Secret stores are also offering a nine-track CD of his songs for $10.

"I can't speak for his motivation, but it certainly wouldn't be commercial," Razek says.

Впервые за всю свою 40-летнюю карьеру Боб Дилан сам лично появляется в телевизионной рекламе.

В 1996 году в рекламе Банка Монреаля использовалась его песня The Times They Are A-Changing (Времена меняются). Тогда певца обвиняли в том, что он соблазнился большими деньгами.

Странное решение?

Сейчас же участие Дилана в рекламе оживленного обсуждают его поклонники на чат-сайтах в интернете.

2 Dark-horse: Infidels образец реггей: Man of Peace, I and I, выкинутая из альбома Tell Me. а вообще-то Dylan previously FLIRTED WITH REGGAE on his 1983 album Infidels which featured the legendary reggae rhythm section of drummer Sly Dunbar and bass player Robbie Shakespeare.... Если ты делаешь альбом с исполнителями реггей, то так или иначе налет реггей будет.

Еще... Половина материала Infidels во время формирования альбома была выкинута за ненадобностью, но не пропала, можно послушать. Где-то есть ляпусы, но они даже придают особый смак.

Masked and Anonymous. Хороший фильм. Если кому не нравится - то это дело вкуса. Я, например, советовал бы покупать фильм в паре с саундтреком, потому как сам фильм мог бы обойтись без половины музыки. Автором сценария был сам Дилан под псевдонимом - это уже известно на сегодня. Основная идея фильма вложена в монологи исполнителей ролей. У меня два варианта фильма - неофициальный, прошедший по рукам до выхода официального DVD и русский - мне почему-то кажется, что он урезанный, по крайней мере в документальной части, но расширенный за счет другой концовки. На фестивале Sundance концовка была другой. Саундтрек - великолепен и продуман. Есть слабые моменты в виде Grateful Dead, но последующее исполнение Jerry Garcia под конец пластинки уравнивает...

А самое смешное заключается в том, что Дилан может делать все, что хочет. А остальным остается только каким-то образом комментировать. Кто - плохо, кто - хорошо. Ему то все равно!

Reggae Artists 'Roll' With Dylan

Toots Hibbert, Beres Hammond, Sizzla and Israel Vibration's Apple Gabriel are among the reggae heavyweights contributing to "Is It Rolling, Bob?," a reggae tribute to Bob Dylan. The 15-track set is due Aug. 10 via Sanctuary/RAS Records and includes a rare reggae mix by Sly & Robbie of Dylan's "I and I," the original version of which can be found on his 1983 album "Infidels."

"As a major fan of both Bob Dylan and Bob Marley, I believe this record really addresses the commonality between their audiences," RAS Records founder/album producer Gary Himelfarb says. "Dylan was a voice of the oppressed in the 1960s just as Bob Marley was a voice of the oppressed in 1970s."

The set is highlighted by Hibbert's version of "Maggie's Farm," Luciano's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (which frequently substitutes "zion" for "heaven"), Gabriel's upbeat take on "The Times They Are A-Changin'," Hammond's "Just Like a Woman" and Gregory Isaacs' "Mr. Tambourine Man."

"Is It Rolling" features a backing band of musicians who played on sessions by Marley and the Wailers and Peter Tosh, including harmonica player Lee Jaffe and guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith.

Dylan's vast body of work has previously been the subject of tribute albums by a string quartet and gospel artists, among many others.

2Remasterman: ну, я видимо не совсем правильно понимаю, что такое регги, если I and I причислять именно к этому стилю. А вообще главной звездой помимо Дилана на этом альбоме был Марк Нопфлер (и Алан Кларк), поэтому как раз очень чувствуется влияние Dire Straits.

Кстати, очень недооцененный публикой альбом, по-моему...

Нопфлер хотел сделать погоду на этом альбоме, ему не дали, почитайте интервью Нопфлера тех лет. Кроме Нопфлера там был и Мик Тейлор, но и ему погоды сделать не удалось. А вот дуэт Данбар-Шекспир сработал. Я, конечно, не умаляю роли Нопфлера и Кларка, но секция то работала именно исполнителей, ПОСТОЯННО работающих в регги.

ps Немногие из присутствующих на концерте Аквариума (23 мая) в Минске заметили, что за песню Гребенщиков спел посреди концерта. Это была 'You Belong To Me'. Сам Дилан спел ее в 1993-м, а позже саму эту песню можно услышать (в довольно гнилом исполнении) в мультфильме Shrek. Самого Дилана можно услышать на саундтреке Natural Born Killers. Чтоб было пусто продюсеру, формировавшему саундтрек и запихнувшему туда диалоги в конце песни!!!

Кстати, у Дилана одесситы только со стороны отца, а по матери его предки были из Латвии.Так что,он в некотором роде и ваш,Lizard, земляк
