British Library app brings Beowulf, The Beatles

Injecting some high-brow culture into a smartphone realm more characterized by people texting at dinner and playing video games on the subway, the British Library has released an application to allow exploration of some of its collection.

OK, so perhaps it won't mean people rushing to read Beowulf in the original Old English from 1,000 years ago. But it's nice to know the option is there, and the application comes with commentary from experts such as a video on Beowulf by linguist David Crystal.

In any event, it is encouraging at least to this history and museum fan that the Treasures app gives a new digital lease on life to a wide range of historic cultural artifacts. The app will cost $4 for iPhone and Android and $6 for iPad once a half-price promotion ends January 24. Among Treasures' subjects:

• The Gutenberg Bible, Lindisfarne Gospels, and Sultan Baybars' Qur'an;
• Handwritten lyrics by The Beatles;
• Original scores by Mozart, Schubert, Handel, and Purcell;
• Charles Dickens' handwritten draft of "Nicholas Nickleby";
• The writings of Jane Austen as a teenager;
• The battle plan of Admiral Horatio Nelson before beating the French at the Battle of Trafalgar;
• Letters by Galileo and notebooks from Leonardo da Vinci;
• Oracle bones from China about 2,000 years ago;
• And it's the British Library, so of course there has to be a version of the Magna Carta from 1215.

Brand new app for Beatles trivia fans now in Apple store

How much do you know about Beatle trivia? "The Lads From Liverpool," a new app just out for the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, tests your knowledge with what it describes as the largest collection of Beatles trivia in the Apple App store.

The app, from TourBuddy Systems LLC, features questions about the band, their music, the members and their lives both on and off the stage. The trivia questions are displayed randomly. Questions range in difficulty and the points earned for each question vary.

"The Lads from Liverpool" is available from the Apple app store with free updates included for 99 cents. Users with multiple devices can download it once and play it on all your devices universally.

TourBuddy Systems LLC also has produced a Rolling Stones Trivia app.

AirVinyl app adds retro warmth to iPhone music

If digital audio sounds too sterile and flat to you, the AirVinyl app from Sir George Martin’s studio is available to add retro harmonics and ambiance to music played on the iPhone.

The $0.99 app was developed by engineers at Air Studios, which the legendary Beatles producer originally founded in 1969, working with developers at Bappz Ltd.

AirVinyl also includes the capability to create “mix tapes” and playlists from the music on the iPhone, using an interface that looks like a cassette deck, and to access existing iPhone playlists in the app’s mixtape section. Mixtapes can be shared on social networks, and the app is compatible with iTunes Match and iCloud libraries.

The next update will add AirStreem, to link AirVinyl with a user’s Mac over Wi-Fi. New features and additional skins will be added on an ongoing basis.

The newly released iPhone app is in addition to the existing AirVinyl iPad app, which costs $2.99. Danny Kellard, marketing director of Air Entertainment Group said: “With AirVinyl, we set out to recreate the whole vinyl and hi-fi experience, whilst using our expertise as a studio to make an app that delivers a great sound experience from the iPhone and iPad. We also wanted to create an app that users can build on and add components to in the future.”

Maybe a future version could include a Phil Spector mode that plays everything back in monaural.
