Liverpool to add "My Sweet Lord" to Wall of Fame

Liverpool legend George Harrison has earned his spot on the world capital city of pop's Wall of Fame - for the second time. And tomorrow (Friday, 2/22), the latest disc on the Mathew Street wall will be unveiled - in time for what would have been George's 59th birthday, and Sunday's memorial concert.
'My Sweet Lord' last topped the charts in 1971. Now it becomes the 55th number one hit single to get the city in a spin - an accolade which has scooped Liverpool the official title (and a Guinness World Record) of being the world capital city of pop. City Council Leader Mike Storey will unveil the new disc tomorrow.

He said: "George was one of the most influential figures in the music industry over the last forty years, both through his work with The Beatles and then later as a solo writer, performer and successful film maker. There can't be many people who don't have a CD in their collection featuring his work. Everyone who knew of George Harrison knew he was a true Scouser who never forgot his roots. He was a great ambassador for the city. It's a fitting tribute to him that he topped the charts once more with this wonderful record, and I'm delighted that this disc is here in time for the memorial concert, and what would have been George's 59th birthday."

The Wall of Fame is a tribute to the scores of different bands and singers from the city who have reached the number one spot. It was unveiled in March 2001 by pop pensioner Lita Roza, the first ever Scouser to scoop a number one. That was back in 1953 with her hit How Much is that Doggie in the Window.

Just a few yards from the world famous Cavern Club, the Wall features 55 bronze discs representing the chart topping hits which have come out of the city since the charts began 48 years ago. It is dominated by The Beatles, who have 17 discs on the wall, but other bands featured include Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Sonia, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers, Cilla Black, Mel C and Atomic Kitten.
