Billy’s second Apple album “Encouraging Words” kicked off where the previous one ended, a similar superstar line-up and some great songs including “My Sweet Lord” which was actually released by Billy before George’s version.
The 1993 CD release contained two bonus tracks and like the previous album these are retained for the 2010 edition: the self-penned, “As Long As I Got My Baby” and “All That I Got (I‘m Gonna Give It To You) which Billy wrote with label-mate, Doris Troy. These are joined by the previously unreleased “How Long Has The Train Been Gone”, which he would later re-record in 1973.

Billy Preston was a unique talent and it was no surprise that following his work with The Beatles on the sessions for both the Let It Be and Abbey Road albums that he was invited to record for the Apple label. Billy had been signed to Capitol Records in the US, but they released him from his contract so that he could join the label that they also distributed.
Billy’s debut album for the label was first released in August, 1969 following the release of the hit single of the same name in June. All of the tracks were produced by George Harrison except for three produced by Wayne Schuler. A host of superstars were present on the sessions including Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Ginger Baker and Richie Havens.
The 1991 CD contained three bonus tracks and these are retained for this release “Through All Times”, “As I Get Older” and “That’s The Way God Planned It” (alternative version). One further bonus track has been added and that is the previously unreleased “Something’s Got To Change” which Billy co-wrote and which had originally been recorded by Ray Charles in 1967.

Doris Troy came into Apple via Billy Preston and like Billy and Jackie Lomax, she had a keen supporter in George Harrison.
George produced and co-wrote with her, Doris’s debut Apple single “Ain’t That Cute” first released in February, 1970. A second single “Jacob’s Ladder” this time produced by Doris followed in August that year before her album was released in the following month. She had some friends around her including George, Ringo, Klaus Voormann, Jackie Lomax and Stephen Stills and this album is still an absolute gem.
All of the bonus tracks have been returned from the previous CD but we have added one more to the 2010 edition – a different take of “All That I’ve Got (I Am Gonna Give It To You)”

Jackie Lomax was an old friend from Liverpool with an extremely soulful voice. One of the first acts signed to the label, His debut single was the George Harrison composition “Sour Milk Sea”. Few artists can boast three Beatles on his album but Jackie could as John was the only absentee. Nicky Hopkins and Eric Clapton also graced the album with the material recorded in the UK with noted session musicians Hal Blaine, Joe Osborn and Larry Knechtel appearing on those tracks recorded in the US.
When first released on CD the album contained five bonus tracks. The 2010 edition includes six. These include the original mono singles mix of “New Day”, and the previously released single coupling of “Thumbin’ A Ride” and “How The Web Was Woven. Added to this are three tracks recorded and mixed in 1969 and previously unreleased: “You’ve Got To Be Strong” and “Can You Hear Me” are co-written with Doris Troy – the former song also appears on her Apple album — and “You Make It With Me” one of Jackie’s solo compositions.

The first album by renowned singer-songwriter, James Taylor was released in late 1968. Although it did not sell in the same volume as some of his later releases, it was very much a taste of “things to come”. Containing a number of Taylor signature tunes, “Something In The Way She Moves”, “Rainy Day Man” and “Carolina In My Mind”. This album is must for old and new fans alike.
The previous CD release did not contain any additional material but we are pleased to confirm that this new version will be blessed with four extra performances. An early band demo of “Sunny Skies”, a track later to find it way on to his Sweet Baby James album, is followed by the up-tempo “Let Me Ride”, another demo of a song that would eventually surface on Mud Slide Slim And The Blue Horizon in 1971. The album concludes with two further solo acoustic demos, “Sunshine Sunshine” and “Carolina In My Mind”

John Tavener is now Sir John Tavener and perhaps the greatest living British classical composer. Again further evidence that Apple could appeal to all tastes. Both of his Apple albums are now presented on one CD and we are sure that they will appeal to the audience that he has built up over the years.

Mary’s second album originally issued in November, 1971 was musically closer to her ‘roots’. Produced by (her later husband) Tony Visconti, Earth Song Ocean Song is a beautiful album with contributions from Ralph McTell, Dave Cousins (Strawbs) and Danny Thompson (Pentangle) among others.
In the 1995 reissue no bonus tracks were included in the CD. In the 2010 edition, there are three plus another three digital download exclusives. The three additions are the B-side “Kew Gardens”, “When I am Old One Day” (previously a bonus track on the Those Were The Days album) and “Let My Name Be Sorrow”, the A-side from 1971.

Mary Hopkin was Apple’s first success story. Her debut single, produced by Paul McCartney “Those Were The Days” rocketed her to international stardom all at the tender age of eighteen.
Following the huge success of the single, Paul and Mary set about putting together her first album which was released in February, 1969 just six months after the single. Post Card was a mixture of contemporary folk music (including three Donovan songs), with some older ‘standards’.
In the US, “Those Were The Days” was added as track one of the original release and for the CD in 1991, this was retained. We are also retaining it on this 2010 edition along with “Turn Turn Turn” (To Everything There Is A Season)”. In addition we are also including both sides of Mary’s second single “Goodbye” and “Sparrow”. To complete the CD we are also included a track that could have been her third single had history not dictated otherwise. “Fields Of St. Etienne” was scheduled as Apple 16 but the release was cancelled and it is therefore being released here for the first time. The song was later re-recorded with a different arrangement and eventually released in some countries coupled with “Que Sera Sera (Whatever Will Be Will Be)”.

A late addition to the reissue programme, but a very welcome one, The Radha Krsna Temple achieved unexpected hits in 1969 with Hare Krishna Mantra and the following year with its follow-up, the lovely “Govinda”. The album, which was produced by George Harrison, was originally released in 1971 and first released on CD in 1993 with the addition of “Prayer To The Spiritual Masters”, which had been the B-side to their first single. This title is retained for the new edition where it is joined by a new previously unreleased bonus track, “Namaste Saraswati Devi”.

Further evidence of the diverse nature of the label was when The Modern Jazz Quartet were signed in late 1968. John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibes), Percy Heath (bass) and Connie Kay (drums) had been established for many years and the two albums released here on one-CD represents their complete output for the label. A nice little bonus at the end is their version of “Yesterday” which is being released for the very first time.

Yes, for the first time a collection of Apple’s Greatest Hits – well not exactly but pretty close.
Actually, this 21-track CD serves as a great overview of the catalogue for those that only want that. To others it is hopefully a useful introduction to a label that achieved and enormous amount in a very short space of time. Some artists stayed the course, others disappeared as fast as they had arrived, some went on to better and bigger things having made a start at Apple. They all left an impression.

"No Dice" я картинку не прицепил, а его указал на предыдущей странице. А вот одноимённый альбом "Badfinger" выходил на Warner Bros. K 56023.
