McCARTNEY ATTEMPS TO SAVE SACRED BEATLES BUILDING

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY is bidding to save the Liverpool Art College building where his former BEATLES bandmate JOHN LENNON studied from being torn down.

Multi-millionaire McCartney, who owns the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) situated next door, will try to stop the landmark college from being demolished or made into appartments.

The Institute's co-founder MARK FEATHERSTONE-WITTY, says, "It would be poetic if LIPA, which is on the site of Paul's old school, and the building that was John's old art college were joined together.

"We are looking to expand, so it has come at a good time for us. I would like to see the buildings preserved for artistic purposes."

A spokesman for local tour company Cavern City Tour's Magical Mystery Bus Trip says, "That building is synonymous with The Beatles. It's where John and (his first wife) CYNTHIA met and there's a fantastic photo of the two sitting on the steps outside.

"Paul and GEORGE (HARRISON) were at the grammar school next door. They used to jump over the adjoining wall into the art college to visit their mates."

McCARTNEY BLASTS CANADA OVER SEAL HUNTING

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY has written an angry letter to Canadian Prime Minister PAUL MARTIN over the country's harp seal hunting, only days after the premier was criticised from BONO over the country's foreign aid.

The animal-loving ex-BEATLE sent Martin a letter on Wednesday (30NOV05) appealing to him to ban the controversial practice. The Canadian government insists the north west Atlantic harp seal population is currently stable at 5.9 million, after raising the hunting quote to 319,517 earlier this year (05).

McCartney's letter reads, "We wanted to put you on notice that if Canada moves forward with another hunt next year, we will do all we can to focus attention on this unjustified, outdated and truly horrific practice, including, potentially, visiting the seals and the ice."

McCartney and his wife HEATHER MILLS McCARTNEY may visit the ice floes next year (06) to draw media attention to the issue.

Over the weekend (25-27NOV05), Bono met with Martin and implored the PM to increase debt relief to developing countries, saying, "I'm mystified, actually, by the man. I like him very much, personally.

"I just think that it's a huge opportunity that he's missing out on. This is important to the Canadian people.

PAUL McCARTNEY ABBEY ROAD STUDIO SPECIAL HEADING TO PBS

Paul McCartney's summer performance for a select group of fans at London's Abbey Road Studios will be broadcast as a PBS special on February 27th. PBS' Great Performances will begin airing Paul McCartney: Chaos And Creation At Abbey Road, which features McCartney previewing tracks from his then, soon-to-be released Chaos And Creation In The Backyard album, in addition to performing such Beatles favorites as "Things We Said Today," "I've Got A Feeling," "Blackbird" and "Lady Madonna" -- which was played in a new "swing" arrangement -- as well as a drastically reworked version of Wings' 1974 Number One hit, "Band On The Run."

McCartney also collaborates with the audience, who contribute percussion and handclaps to several songs -- including a spontaneous jam that he records track-by-track in front of them.

Among the highlights featured are McCartney performing the intro to the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" on one of the studio's mellotrons -- an early form of synthesizer.

Great Performances: Paul McCartney: Chaos And Creation At Abbey Road debuts on February 27th, on PBS at 10 p.m. ET.

McCartney wrapped up his U.S. tour on Wednesday night (November 30th) in Los Angeles. He's expected to announce additional tour dates in the new year.

McCARTNEY HAD PLANNED TO REUNITE BEATLES

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY planned to reunite THE BEATLES a year before JOHN LENNON was murdered, according to a newly released record contract.

In a 1979 deal with CBS Records, McCartney claimed he could again make music with Lennon, GEORGE HARRISON and RINGO STARR under the banner of The Beatles.

Details of the $10.8 million (GBP6 million) contract have been released to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Lennon's death on 8 December 1980 later this week.

An industry insider comments, "This is the earliest evidence of any Beatle making formal overtures towards a reunion."

Lennon was shot by assassin MARK DAVID CHAPMAN outside his New York City apartment.

Mills McCartney seeks EU ban on cat/dog furs

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Animal rights campaigner Heather Mills McCartney called on the European Union to ban the production and sale of cat and dog fur in Europe.

Mills McCartney, wife of Paul McCartney, revealed evidence Thursday that she said shows a thriving industry and trade in cat and dog skins, mainly in the Czech Republic, which joined the EU in 2004.

"Domestic cats are stolen off the streets in the Czech Republic, and we're talking about 2,000 to 3,000 just in the Czech Republic, not in the whole of Europe," she told reporters.


"They skin them alive," Mills McCartney said, displaying a baby blanket sewn together with 20 cat skins.

A video was shown of emaciated dogs and cats kept in dark, cramped rooms and cages. The video also portrayed the killing of a dog.

"It has to stop," said EU lawmaker Struen Stevenson, who is backing the appeal. "The main thing that we are seeking is to have an EU-wide ban on the import, export and trade in cat and dog skins."

The United States and Australia have already instituted bans on the trade, as well as EU member nations Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece and Italy.

Activists have been campaigning for five years to have a ban passed by the EU's European Commission.

"How much more do we have to show to get this ban in place?" asked Mills McCartney, who was in Brussels earlier this year to campaign for the same cause. "How many more animals have to be skinned alive before they (the Commission) go and do something about it?"

McCartney: 'Bambi made me fight for animal rights'
Sir Paul McCartney credits classic animated Disney characters Bambi and Dumbo with spurring him on to champion animal rights.

The former Beatle, who is a strict vegetarian and supporter of pressure group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), realised cruelty inflicted on animals was wrong when he saw the way humans behaved in the Disney cartoons.

He says, "If you think of Bambi, it's mum gets killed by a hunter and I think that made me grow up thinking hunting isn't cool.

"You look through a lot of these great stories: Dumbo - his mum is quite badly treated.

"Kids, as I once was, have grown up feeling it's a bad idea to be cruel to animals."

MILLS McCARTNEY FORCED OUT OF REALITY SHOW

Sir Paul McCartney's wife Heather Mills McCartney has been forced to drop out of a British reality TV show because she needs to undergo surgery on her partially amputated leg.

The former model had signed up to begin filming The Games, which pits male and female celebrities against each other in a series of athletic events, early next year.

But doctors have told her she needs further corrective surgery on the severe injury she sustained in 1993 when she was hit by a police motorcycle while crossing a London street.

A show insider tells British newspaper The Sun, "She's really disappointed. She may only have one leg but she keeps in shape.

"She wanted to prove being disabled shouldn't hold anyone back."

MILLS McCARTNEY: 'I WON'T BE GETTING ANY CHRISTMAS PRESENTS'

HEATHER MILLS McCARTNEY could be waking up to an empty stocking this Christmas (05), after revealing she doesn't want to receive any presents.

The wife of rocker SIR PAUL McCARTNEY would prefer her loved ones to spend the money on better causes - and she isn't even expecting a greeting card.

She says, "I'm not interested in presents. I just think we should give to charity.

"Hopefully people won't bother with cards and just donate the money to good causes. I'll be sending an email one instead."

MILLS McCARTNEY TO HAVE MAJOR OPERATION

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY's wife HEATHER MILLS McCARTNEY is preparing to undergo major surgery to stop the constant pain she has suffered since giving birth to their daughter BEATRICE in 2003.

The former BEATLE's 37-year-old wife had to have a metal plate in her back after being hit by a police motorbike in 1994 - the accident which also lost her her leg.

It is believed her subsequent problems have been caused by the pregnancy, which forced the plate out of position.

Model and animal rights campaigner Mills McCartney is booking into a top London hospital later this month (JAN06) to have a titanium replacement fitted.

A spokesman confirms, "She is booked into hospital to have some remedial work because the baby put pressure on her pelvis when she was pregnant and it has been causing her discomfort ever since."
