Flint Journal Article on Tom and Dana
It's two hours before showtime in St. Louis, and Tom Petty is a nervous wreck.

"If you don't get nervous before you're going to play to 20,000 people," Petty says in his signature monotone, "something's not plugged in right."

But he's got someone close by to help calm his nerves and help pick out what he's going to wear - his wife, the former Dana York, a 1982 graduate of Flushing High School.

"We just got to the gig in St. Louis, and I've got to get his clothes together," the 42-year-old Flint native says calmly before pausing to reassure her jittery husband that, "We've got time, Tommy!"

"We get along so well," she notes. "It's really an unusual relationship."

Indeed. The Pettys first met back stage in 1991 at one of his concerts in Houston. She was newly married to her high school sweetheart at the time. He still was hitched to his first wife and the mother of his two daughters, Adria and Kim.

It was, by their accounts, a magical meeting for the rock 'n' roll superstar from Gainesville, Fla., and the small-town girl from Flushing, Mich. "I just completely fell in love with her the minute I saw her," Petty, 54, told author Mark Zollo in the book "Conversations With Tom Petty," which will be published this November. "And apparently the feeling was mutual. There was immediately some kind of electricity between us."

"It was love at first sight," she confirms from St. Louis, "but he was married at the time."

They went their separate ways. He solidified his position as one of rock's most vital songwriters and successful recording and touring artists. She worked in human resources for a nonprofit agency in Houston, where she'd moved almost immediately after graduating from high school, part of the mass exodus of Michiganians looking for work after the bottom fell out of the auto industry.

York, an artist and music lover, also had a son, Dylan, with her first husband. They named him after poet Dylan Thomas and rock's poet laureate Bob Dylan, one of Petty's friends and a fellow member of the Traveling Wilburys.

They both got on with their lives, but, as York says, "For a long time, I knew I was married to the wrong person."

York didn't meet the guy she calls "Tommy" again until four years later. She was back stage at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, where he performed as a guest of the night's headliner, Johnny Cash. Dana and Tom were going through divorces then.

"He remembered me. I was shocked," she recalls of that fateful meeting, which she calls a "fluke" because she'd only been at the club twice before.

"It was really weird. We met and locked eyes. He walked away, and we both turned and looked at each other," she remembers. "He had a dream and wrote a song about it."

That song, "Angel Dream," appears in two versions on the 1996 soundtrack he recorded with his band, the Heartbreakers, for the Jennifer Aniston movie "She's the One." It's pretty obvious from the lyrics he wrote (excerpted above) how he felt about her.

"It was very unusual to hook up again later in life," an obviously grateful Petty says amid the din of the back-stage chaos in St. Louis. "It's pretty far out really, but, you know, sometimes things are meant to happen, and that was one of them."

They started dating. She even brought him to Michigan to meet her mom and see where she grew up. "He did come to Flushing with me once," Petty says. "When we first got together, around '95-'96, he came to my mom's house in Fenton for Thanksgiving. I drove him around Flushing, by Flushing Park and the old house. It was pretty cool. It was snowing like crazy and deer were out. It was beautiful. It was pretty weird, because no one knew he was there."

What did he think of his impromptu tour? "He loved it," she says. "He's from Gainesville, which is unbelievably a lot like Flushing, with a lot of pine trees and neighborhoods that are kind of the same."

Their romance fueled bogus rumors among locals that the Pettys had been spotted at downtown Flushing landmarks such as Skip's and Duffy's. Not true, she says.

After a long romance, Dana and Tom married on June 3, 2001, at the end of his "The Last DJ" tour in Las Vegas. A few days later, they had another ceremony at Petty's Malibu estate, with rock 'n' roll icon Little Richard officiating.

Leaping into the lap of luxury, where your husband's friends and associates have included people like the late George Harrison, former President Bill Clinton and Stevie Nicks, can be a major adjustment for anyone. "It was kind of like jumping on a fast-moving train," Petty says of his wife's predicament. "I think that she very gracefully adapted to this sort of life, and she's remained the same person that she was when I first met her. She hasn't changed much."

The Pettys live with her son, Dylan, who's 12, and their dog, Chase (Petty's daughters have grown up and moved). Dana's mother, Nancy Arnold, moved to the area a few years ago and runs Petty's estate. Her brother, Dan York Jr., an SBC executive, lives nearby (her late father, Dan York Sr., moved to LA several years ago).

Her grandmother, Marie Russell, is the newest addition to the Petty residence. "We went to visit her in the nursing home, and Tommy said, 'There's no way she's living there. She's moving in with us.' He's the sweetest, most caring man I've ever met," his proud wife gushes. "Not many men would let your grandmother move in."

"Life is good," he husband acknowledges. "It's like I've been adopted by a big family. That's something I enjoy."

The couple hardly spends any time apart. Petty praises her level-headedness. "She's pretty well anchored," he says. "She's got a good head on her shoulders. You have to survive all this."

"Tommy's very grounded," she says of her soft-spoken husband. "I'm married to a very normal guy. He can't go out a lot. That part is hard on me. We can't really go out and do things like normal people because he'll get bothered with people who want his autograph, but we take time to play tennis, go boogie boarding and horse riding, things the two of us can do with my son."

She's also a fixture on his tours. "He gets really nervous. After 40 years (of doing this), he's still a nervous wreck," she said.

He also likes to have her by his side when the show's over. "He won't come out on tour without me. That's why he tours in the summer," she explains. "I won't come without Dylan. (Tom) does not like to be alone in hotel rooms the night after a show. It's a lonely business if you don't have someone you like."

"Conversations" author Mark Zollo noted the effect she's had on the rock star. "Dana's presence," he wrote, "always seemed to make Tom, who was already a genuinely happy guy, even happier."

The guy who once wrote "even the losers ... get lucky sometimes" says he feels pretty lucky to have met the girl from Michigan. "We've been very blessed," he says. "Things are so good it's hard to accept some days. You think, 'Why me?' "

She feels the same way. "I was perfectly happy growing up in Flint and Flushing with no money and no possessions," she insists. "I never cared about that. To have that now is really bizarre. Just to live like this is lucky and weird. I never imagined my life would end up like this."

Traveling Wilburys.
Эта песня, «Angel Dream» в двух вариантах вышла в 1996 году на саундтреке, который он записал вместе со своей группой, The Heartbreakers, к фильму «She’s The One» с Дженнифер Энистон в главной роли.

Автор таких строк как «even the losers…get lucky sometimes» говорит, что ему очень повезло, что он познакомился с девушкой с Мичигана.

Questions for Paul Zollo from fans regarding the book.

- How did you decide to focus on Tom for your fourth book-length project? You've interviewed just about all the major songwriters of our time...what about Tom intrigued you enough to devote two years of your life to the project?

I love Tom’s music, and his devotion and enthusiasm to his art. It is remarkable that he has been doing this for about 30 years now, and his new work is every bit as great, if not greater, than his previous work. As he said, other people go on trips to Tahiti or Hawaii, or play golf, but what he does is write songs, make records, and tour with his phenomenal band. It’s the reason why his work is so great – he truly loves what he does, and that love is manifest in all his music.

I also focused on him because he said yes. He’s always been open to doing interviews with me, and I have been blessed to have interviewed him several times over the years. So when I thought of this idea, I called Mary Klauzer, who is one of his managers, and she came back with a yes for me. Which thrilled me then, and which I am so lucky to have received. Of all the songwriters I’ve interviewed (interviews which are compiled in my book Songwriters on Songwriting), Tom is one of the warmest and more likeable. And I love the full arc of his music, and the purity of his songs, which are exceptional, as I know you know.

- Tom mentions how thorough you are when preparing for interviews, even going as far as to learn songs on the guitar. Did you have any interview sessions where instruments were played?

I did learn many of the songs, so I could play them on either guitar or piano. This is one of the best ways to get into the interior of a song, and to get the songwriter to open up. When you say, “This song is in E minor,” for example, it shows the songwriter you know your stuff, and he skips over the simple stuff to delve into the heart and soul of the songs. Tom didn’t play guitar or piano during the interview sessions, though guitars and drums and keyboards and congas were all around us in his home studio (and I would doodle on his piano or one of his guitars while waiting for him sometimes, to meet me), but he did sing riffs at times, and also rhythms, and grooves, of some of the songs.

- How was the format of the book decided upon? Was it known from the start it would be "conversation" style?

Yes, it was to be a compilation of interviews from the start, but at first I thought it would not be chronological, and would be more about his music and less about his life than it is. I read a wonderful book that Paul Simon actually sent me a few years ago called The Brutality of Fact, which is a great series of interviews with the painter Francis Bacon. This was my model for the interview book. It is a series of interviews that is not chronological. But as we got into the interviews -- as Tom wrote in his foreword (which I love) -- it became clear to us that his life and his music are intertwined. So I asked him questions in chronology about his entire life for the first part of the book, and then went over specific songs in the 2nd half of the book.

- How did you know when you were "done" with the book? Did you set a time limit? Was there a time limit on the interview sessions themselves?

We didn’t set a time limit for the book. I knew it was done when I finished asking questions about his entire life, and almost all of his songs. There was no time limit on the interview sessions, but they usually were about three hours long.

- Did you conduct these interviews in the mornings, afternoons, or evenings?

Always in the early afternoon. We would meet always at 2 pm. Tom is a late night guy, and likes to sleep, as I understand it, until about noon. So some times he would come in, drinking a cup of joe, and say, “Top of the morning to you!” He was working on his new album Traveling Companion with Jeff Lynne and Mike Campbell during the week, so we would always meet on Saturdays.

- How much time did it take to compile and edit all of the sessions? Did Tom add/delete anything for the final draft?

It took almost a full year. We met almost every week, so we got a lot done quickly. I have Tom to thanks for this focus on the work. He didn’t delete anything, but he did redo the section about Howie Epstein, and his problems with, and ultimate death from, heroin. We had a much longer version, and Tom didn’t want that dark chapter to dominate the book.

- Was there anybody Tom mentions in the book that surprised you? Any surprising influences? Collaborators?

No major surprises, as I know his history, but it was interesting to see the joy with which he related his collaborations with many great artists, most notably the Wilburys --- Dylan, Harrison and Orbison as well as Jeff Lynne (who he loved and still loves working with as a producer) but also Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Dave Stewart and Johnny Cash.

- Did you get to meet any of the other Heartbreakers? Or just Tom?

I met all the Heartbreakers a few years back, before Howie’s death, at Mike Campbell’s home studio in the San Fernando valley of L.A., when I went to interview Tom for United Airlines. But during these sessions for the book I didn’t see any Heartbreakers, though I did see Tom’s beautiful wife Dana, and his dog Chase.

- Did Tom consult with any other band members for information/accuracy of accounts?

Not that I know of.

- Has Tom's songwriting style influenced the way you write songs?

Yes, it has. He has mastered a simplicity and purity, of which I wrote earlier, and a great mastery of the song form. The man knows how to write a good chorus, for example, and great verses and bridges. This, he said, he got from Jeff Lynne, who said if the verse isn’t as good as the chorus, that you should throw it out, and create one that is.
Tom also told me once that if a chord doesn’t sound right in a song, it probably shouldn’t be there. This advice went a long way, as songwriters, including yours truly, are prone to use unusual chords and chord progressions just to do something different. Tom has shown me it doesn’t need to be different as much as it needs to be good, and pure.

- Has Tom ever seriously tried to quit smoking? Does he realize his fans worry about that?

I don’t know anything about his smoking cigarettes, and don’t know if he knows his fans’ feelings about it. I didn’t ask about cigarettes. He does seem very healthy these days, though, and told me he works out with a trainer, and even does kick boxing, because “no one wants to see a fat Tom Petty.” He was bright and happy and healthy throughout the sessions.

He did tell me pot is too strong nowadays, and that he doesn’t smoke pot. He said if the band smoked pot during a session, the session would come to an immediate halt. And he said smoking pot during a mixing session is really a bad idea, as you must keep your senses in working order to do a good job. He said because of some of his songs, like “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” people thing he is an avid pot smoker, which he is not. But he says when he performs that song, the stage rains with joints, from fans throwing them at him.

He did smoke cigarettes during our interview sessions. And together we drank cokes – out of those cool little bottles.
Are there any plans for some sort of promotional tour with or without Tom for the book? Are you doing anything interesting around the country to promote the book?

Yes, in November I am going to do readings and signings (without Tom, who will be on tour) in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Francisco and also Chicago, Boston and New York. Tom told me he would go on Leno to promote the book, and I hope he does. He is also signing a few guitars, which will be awarded to lucky fans. I wish I could get one!

- Did you ever go to interview Tom for the book and because he was not in the mood, decided to do something else he had in mind?

No, he was in a great mood during these sessions, always greeting me with a happy smile. It was a happiness that surrounded all the interviews, and which stemmed from his happy life with Dana and their son Dylan, and from the great new album he was working on, which he said he considered to be on a par with his best work. And with which I agree. In fact, I’m listening to it now, and I really love it.

- Been to any shows? Any memorable performances by TPATH?

I’ve been fortunate to see him many times. He is an astounding performer, with such an amazing body of work, that every show he does is phenomenal. The Heartbreakers also happen to be one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time – and not just within America. My only regret when I see him perform is that he doesn’t do some of my favorite songs of his. But with such an extensive body of work, how could he? He has written so many wonderful songs, both the hits and all the others. I saw him in ’81 when I first moved to L.A. – I think that was at The Forum here. And he and the band were incredible. But my favorite show might be the time I saw him in L.A. with Dylan, when he and Bob intertwined their songs together. He and his band were on fire that night, and it was a truly remarkable experience.

- What aspect of Tom (either his demeanor or his memories) was most surprising/unexpected?

I was surprised that he was so open about difficult subjects, such as smashing his hand during the making of “Rebels,” and also his discussion of the nightmare of the fire that burned down his house, and his feelings about the fact that someone wanted to kill him and his family. His demeanor only surprised me in that he seemed so happy throughout. There were no down days.

- Do you consider Tom a friend now, or was this simply a professional relationship?

I do consider him a friend. I have called him a few times – once just to tell him how great the song “Square One” is from the new album. And I was thrilled when he played me the new album, at a loud volume (he said his hearing was somewhat shot) in his home studio. I feel the song “Down South” is also a masterpiece, and the opener, “Turn This Car Around,” which he is doing in concert, is exceptional. But the whole album is wonderful, and I felt and feel privileged that I can call him and tell him so.

- What kind of instruments do you play?

Guitar is my main instrument, and I also play piano, bass and a little mandolin. No drums though – Tom does play drums, and plays them on the new album, which I found to be both brave and cool. He puts down his drumming, but it’s really very good.

- What's in store for future books from the life of Tom Petty?

I don’t know! I only hope his fans will like this one. So far, the reviews have been great, and it’s not even out in stores yet (it will hit stores in September, I believe, though the official publication month is November). I’ll admit I hope there aren’t any other books on Tom too soon, because I want this one to be the main one fans turn to.

- Finally, thanks for your time and we look forward to asking you even more questions after the book is released!

I’m happy to share my thoughts on this book with Tom’s fans – and to express my gratitude to them for interest in the book, and to let them know Tom told me he is bolstered all the time by the level of devotion for him and his work that comes from his fans.

Thanks to everyone for sending in questions, to Ryan for compiling this, and to all the fans of Tom for their love of this great man and his music.

PETTY PLANS MUSIC MOGUL FUTURE

Rocker TOM PETTY is planning to set up his own independent record label because music executives take too long to release his albums.

The FREE FALLIN' singer wants to return to the days when bands like the BEATLES put out three albums a year.

He says, "I like the idea of having an independent label because it reminds me of the early days of rock 'n' roll when there were a lot of independent labels, and they were actually driven by people who liked music.

"They were music people, not lawyers or accountants or whatever you have running the music business now."

Petty Tour Wins Big Petty Tour Wins Big
Heartbreakers bust out the hits on sold-out summer tour

"I'm fifty-four, and girls are throwing their underwear at me," says Tom Petty, who's in the middle of one of his most successful tours ever with the Heartbreakers. "The crowds are just manic -- in Boston, they were singing so loud they actually drowned us out," he adds, on a rare day off from the road. "We're seeing more young people coming in, and it's just getting huger. I don't know how to explain it."

Petty's long-standing commitment to holding down ticket prices can't hurt: Tickets for the shows -- which also include the reunited Black Crowes as openers on most dates -- begin at twenty-five dollars and top off at around sixty-five dollars. "Even as far back as 1980, I was in fear of the tickets getting priced out of the ordinary person's pocketbook," Petty says. "I would feel embarrassed charging 200 bucks to come in."

The shows are heavy on hits, from "American Girl" to "You Don't Know How It Feels." "No matter what we do, we're leaving out someone's favorite every night," says Petty, who has also been playing the Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care," in tribute to his late former bandmates George Harrison and Roy Orbison. "I always dedicate it 'to the Wilburys, wherever they're traveling tonight,'" Petty says. "I'd resisted playing Wilburys songs, but when we did the Concert for George, that was one Olivia [Harrison] asked us to play."

Crowds have also been getting a taste of Petty's upcoming solo album with the chugging rocker "Turn This Car Around." Petty reunited with Full Moon Fever producer (and former Wilbury) Jeff Lynne for the disc, due late this year or early in 2006. "I think it's going to surprise people," Petty says.

Petty would also like to release a live album soon (he isn't fond of his first one, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation). And he and the Heartbreakers plan to celebrate next year's thirtieth anniversary of their debut album with another tour together, as well as a possible all-star concert. Says Petty, "I never dreamed we'd be at this level of success twenty-nine years into it. It just feels like a great gift from the fans."
