The Words and Music of Bruce Springsteen (The Praeger Singer-Songwriter Collection) (Hardcover)
by Rob Kirkpatrick

"The Words and Music of Bruce Springsteen provides a comprehensive, insightful overview of Springsteen's prodigious catalogue of music. Rob Kirkpatrick's rich narrative sheds new light on the songs that have become a soundtrack for the American experience." - Mark K. Updegrove Author of Second Acts: Presidential Lives and Legacies After the White House Formerly publisher of Newsweek and MTV Magazine

Book Description
The Words and Music of Bruce Springsteen provides a comprehensive and coherent look at the work of a thoroughly complex and persistently captivating artist. Springsteen enjoys a popularity that has transcended generations. His 1975 album Born to Run was voted the most popular album of all time in a recently published Zagat survey; his 1984 album Born in the U.S.A. spawned seven Top Ten singles while selling more than 20 million copies; and his 2002 album The Rising was regarded by many critics as the most poignant artistic reaction to 9/11. Springsteen, now in his 50s, has evolved from an over-hyped version of the "next Bob Dylan," to the "future of rock and roll" in the mid-1970s, to a pop culture icon in Reagan America, to a 21st-century populist voice. His career has been covered many times over, yet many of the complexities and apparent contradictions of his music remain unresolved. These include his hard-rock influenced musical background; his movement from themes of rebellion and isolation in his early work to those of a more populist complexion later on; and his contribution in the 1980s to a conservative patriotism--despite his albums' close association with the music and ideas of Woody Guthrie. After a brief biographical treatment, Kirkpatrick considers all of Springsteen's significant albums in chronological order. In addition to this probing musical analysis, he offers a guide to Springsteen's lyrical themes and motifs, allowing readers a coherent insight into the complicated nature of the artist's underlying concerns, influences, and ideas. Rounding out the volume is a consideration of "The Boss's" legacy as a songwriter and musician, as well as appendices including a bibliography and a complete discography. In sum, The Words and Music of Bruce Springsteen provides a comprehensive and coherent look, previously unavailable in a single volume, at the work of a thoroughly complex and persistently captivating artist.

It's About That Time: Miles Davis On and Off Record (Hardcover) It's About That Time: Miles Davis On and Off Record (Hardcover)
by Richard Cook

Here is quite simply one of the most original books about a jazz musician ever published--a biography-cum-discography that focuses in turn on fourteen major albums recorded by Miles Davis, using them as a jumping off point for an illuminating discussion of the turbulent life and work of the "Evil Genius of Jazz." Richard Cook, a veteran writer respected throughout the jazz world, looks at such landmark recordings as Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Kind of Blue, The Complete Live at The Plugged Nickel, In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, and Live at Montreux. Each of these recordings is considered in detail, illuminating their contribution to Davis's development as instrumentalist, group leader, and composer. But Cook goes well beyond these fourteen albums, evaluating all the trumpeter's recordings (official and bootleg), and relating them to events in Miles's life as well as to wider currents in contemporary music. Cook helps us disentangle Miles the legendary figure from the music itself, to re-hear and reconsider this marvelous body of work ranging over four exhilarating decades. The author also highlights the indispensable contributions of sidemen such as John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, and many others, as well as calling for a reassessment of the importance of such "satellite" figures as Gil Evans, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Chick Corea in the development of Miles's music. A comprehensive and rigorous guide to the music and life of Miles Davis, It's About That Time is a stunning book that burns away the fog of myth that surrounds its complex and contrary subject.

About the Author
Richard Cook is the Editor of Jazz Review, the leading British jazz magazine, the co-author (with Brian Morton) of the monumental Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD, and the author of Blue Note Records: The Biography and Richard Cook's Jazz Encyclopedia. His articles have appeared in such magazines and newspapers as The Wire and The Sunday Times. He was also host of a jazz radio program on Greater London Radio and a former contributor to BBC radio productions.

This stunning visual memoir portrays a unique period in music and fashion. Shot by Roberta Bayley, one of the New York punk scene’s most prominent photographers, the photographs chronicle the band from its earliest days, performing before hard-to-please crowds at Max’s Kansas City and CBGB’s, to global superstardom at the end of the 1970s. Featuring 235 candid photographs, many previously unpublished, Blondie: Images 1976-1980 offers a fly-on-the-wall visual perspective of life with the band during these tumultuous years. Miles Davis: The Definitive Biography (Paperback) Miles Davis: The Definitive Biography (Paperback)
by Ian Carr

This exhaustively researched, revised edition of Ian Carr's classic biography throws new light on Davis' life and career: from the early days in New York with Charlie Parker; to the Birth of Cool; through his drug addiction in the early 1950s and the years of extraordinary achievements (1954-1960), during which he signed with Columbia and collaborated with such unequaled talents as John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly and Cannonball Adderly. Carr also explores Davis' dark, reclusive period (1975-1980), offering firsthand accounts of his descent into addiction, as well as his dramatic return to life and music.

Carr has talked with the people who knew Miles and his music best including Bill Evans, Joe Zawinul, Keith Jarrett, and Jack DeJohnette, and has conducted interviews with Ron Carter, Max Roach, John Scofield and others.

100 Albums That Changed Popular Music: A Reference Guide (Hardcover) 100 Albums That Changed Popular Music: A Reference Guide (Hardcover)
by Chris Smith

Whether on vinyl or in digital form, the album has become an integral part of our cultural history. 100 Albums That Changed Popular Music: A Reference Guide tells the stories behind the most groundbreaking, influential, and often controversial albums ever recorded. Narrative chapters in this chronologically organized volume describe how the albums reflected the political, social, and economic culture of the era. Individual entries discuss these albums histories, the inspiration behind their creation, and why they continue to stand the test of time. Selected on the basis of their popular appeal, historical significance, and influence on later genres, the albums included represent a wide variety of genres, such as blues, jazz, rock, reggae, rockabilly, folk, soul, hip-hop, and country. Among the featured are releases from the hard-blues explosion of the '60s, including Robert Johnson's King of the Delta Blues Singers, a landmark album whose songs were later covered by the likes of Cream, Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones. Punk made its mark in the '70s with such albums as Patti Smith's Horses and the Clash's London Calling. In the '80s Michael Jackson's blockbuster LP, Thriller, not only topped the charts, it become the best-selling record of all time. Diversity defined the '90s, with the most influential albums ranging from Garth Brooks' No Fences, which made country one of the hottest musical genres of the decade, to Dr. Dre's debut, The Chronic, a multi-platinum smash hit that brought West Coast hip hop into the mainstream. Each album entry in this book lists the publication information, including release date, label, and producer. A timeline of important events, a selected bibliography for further reading, and an appendix of albums that almost made the cut round out this volume, making it an ideal resource for students, music fans, and general readers alike.

U2 and Philosophy (Popular Culture and Philosophy) (Paperback) U2 and Philosophy (Popular Culture and Philosophy) (Paperback)
by Mark Wrathall (Editor)

Is it possible to be a committed Christian and a rock superstar? Can political activists make good music? Do hugely successful rock bands really care about AIDS and poverty in Africa, or is it just another image-enhancing schtick? U2 and Philosophy ponders these and other seeming dichotomies in the career of the Irish supergroup. For over two decades, U2 has been one of the biggest acts in rock music. They’ve produced over a dozen platinum and multiplatinum records and won 15 Grammy Awards. Critics everywhere have praised the band’s thoughtful, complex lyrics and the artistry of their music. At the same time, Bono, the group’s lead singer, has dedicated himself to political and social causes, blurring the line between rock star and respected statesman. Offering fresh insight into the band’s music and activism, these thought-provoking essays allows fans to discover philosophy through the eyes of U2, and rediscover U2 through the eyes of philosophers.

Girl Groups, Girl Culture (Paperback) Girl Groups, Girl Culture (Paperback)
by Jacqueline Warwick

"Then He Kissed Me"... "He's A Rebel"... "Chains"... "Stop! In the Name of Love" -- these songs capture the spirit of an era and an image of "girlhood" in post-World War II America that still reverberates today. While there were over 1500 girl groups recorded in the '60s--including key hitmakers like the Ronettes, the Supremes, and the Shirelles--studies of girl-group music that address race, gender, class, and sexuality have only just begun to appear. Warwick is the first writer to address '60s girl group music from the perspective of its most significant audience--teenage girls--drawing on current research in psychology and sociology to explore the important place of this repertoire in the emotional development of young girls of the baby boom generation.
Girl Groups, Girl Culture will stand as a landmark study of this important pop music and cultural phenomenon. It promises to be a classic work in American musicology and cultural studies.

The Autobiography of Donovan: The Hurdy Gurdy Man (Paperback) The Autobiography of Donovan: The Hurdy Gurdy Man (Paperback)
by Donovan Leitch

From Publishers Weekly
A folk rocker and early prince of flower power, Donovan (b. 1946) shares wistful memories of his youth growing up in bombed-out Glasgow, Scotland; rambling adolescence in England; and precipitous stardom at age 18. Early on, Donovan (who's known by his first name) contracted polio, leaving him lame. An art student, Donovan left home by 16 to wander with his lifelong friend Gypsy Dave and taught himself how to play guitar by mimicking the folk styles of the Carter Family, Doc Watson, Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, among others he credits. After appearances on the British TV show Ready Steady Go! in 1965, he landed a record contract, and Catch the Wind (with its Bob Dylanesque sound) rode the crest of the British Invasion. Fusing folk with jazz and metal, Donovan forged "Celtic rock," and in his recording sessions, engineered brilliantly by Mickie Most, he worked with all the happening musicians and even collaborated with the Beatles. Donovan toots his own horn, amiably. As he achieves in his music, Donovan writes his bohemian manifesto personably and earnestly, stopping short around 1970, when he reunited with muse Linda Lawrence and dropped out. From Booklist
The quintessential flower-child musician begins his memoirs in the Scots of Glasgow, where he was born in 1946. Moving with his family to England, he changed his accent to conform to new surroundings. He heard Bill Haley and the Comets while still in Scotland, bought Buddy Holly records in England, and as a teenager turned to Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and Woody Guthrie. At 16, he left home, hitchhiking to Cornwall to lead an itinerant life. Eventually settling in London, he made his first records, prided himself on being the Scottish Woody Guthrie, and enjoyed his first real success with the hit "Catch the Wind" and his first American tour. Anecdotal and name-dropping, he also discusses the British rock invasion of America, folk-rock, his first LSD trip, his drug bust in London, and a visit from a Paul McCartney armed with tunes that would eventually be "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yellow Submarine." In the late sixties, tired of it all, he walked away from the music business. A warm, gentle recollection of a turbulent time. June Sawyers

Babylon's Burning: From Punk to Grunge (Hardcover) Babylon's Burning: From Punk to Grunge (Hardcover)
by Clinton Heylin

From Publishers Weekly
When it comes to the heyday of punk rock in the mid to late 1970s, Heylin has put together a solid history, drawing upon interviews with many of the key players from the era. The focus on London bands like the Sex Pistols and the Clash is unsurprising, but New York combos like the Ramones and Television also get their due, and even groups whose influence is less generally recognized, like Cleveland's Pere Ubu or Australia's Radio Birdman, receive well-rounded treatment. Heylin (From the Velvets to the Voidoids) is opinionated, but only rarely do his undisguised preferences disrupt the story. (One notable exception comes when he calls the death of Sid Vicious's girlfriend, Nancy, "justifiable homicide.") If he'd simply closed out his account with the suicide of Joy Division's Ian Curtis in 1980, Heylin would have perfectly captured the punk era. Instead, he spends another hundred pages building up to the death of Kurt Cobain, branded as a poser and a sellout. That the story so quickly works its way to Nirvana after such an in-depth exploration of the '70s underscores the tacked-on feeling of these final chapters. It's a shame, because the core material is strong enough that it didn't need to grasp at such ersatz "relevance." (Jan.)

Book Description

Destined to become a classic on the subject alongside Legs McNeil’s Please Kill Me, Babylon’s Burning is a groundbreaking, definitive account of punk rock, one of the most influential and lasting music movements in history—a movement that ironically was built on self-annihilation. Acclaimed critic Clinton Heylin seamlessly weaves together the lives of disparate artists who had in common not the music (there was no distribution) but the pictures, words, and fashions depicted in magazines like Creem and NME. It was a sound that eschewed conventional lyrics, promoted a gutteral musicality but yet contained a keen pop sensibility. Whether exploring the work of early progenitors like Suicide, The New York Dolls, and Patti Smith or charting the progress of the bands who legitimately took up the mantle in the eighties and nineties, Clinton Heylin brings to life the strands of a global artform. From the Sex Pistols’s clarion call of a record, “Never Mind the Bollocks,” to Kurt Cobain’s songs of an alienated youth, Babylon’s Burning is the brilliant, exhaustively researched story that once and for all defines what Punk is and is not.

On Michael Jackson (Paperback) On Michael Jackson (Paperback)
by Margo Jefferson

From Publishers Weekly
Pulitzer-winning New York Times critic Jefferson collects her meditations on what may be the oddest show-biz figure of all time. "Freaks" is the title of her first essay, and she notes Jackson's attraction to Barnum as well as the strangely apt imagery of his best-known video, "Thriller." Born in 1958 to a bullying father and a mother who was a Jehovah's Witness convert, the youngest member of the Jackson Five quickly became its VIP. Child stars are never "normal," and Jefferson glances at Buster Keaton, Jackie Coogan, Sammy Davis Jr. and, of course, Shirley Temple, the only one of them even more famous than Jackson, unless you count Elizabeth Taylor, Jackson's "best friend," who supplanted Diana Ross as his apparent role model. Jackson, Jefferson believes, is a "sexual impersonator," imitating, at times, a gay man, a white woman, a "gangsta" and a "pop Count Dracula." His bizarre looks and behavior drew literally thousands of cameras to his 2005 trial for child molestation. Jefferson concludes that Jackson may be a "monstrous child," but that he is, to a degree, a mirror of us all. Her slim, smart volume of cultural analysis may remind readers of Susan Sontag's early, brilliant essays on pop culture. (Jan.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
It’s a high-wire act to admire and defend someone as genuinely bizarre and embattled as Michael Jackson. Most of the public has long come to a conclusion about him, so much so that his name rarely grabs tabloid headlines anymore. That Margo Jefferson, a Pulitzer Prize–winning culture and theatre critic for the New York Times, is able to tease out some new insights into Jackson’s relevance is something of an accomplishment. That she provokes some sympathy for her subject is even more impressive. Not that the praise is universal. Her own home paper finds that fanaticism blurs her judgment, something we’ve all been guilty of from time to time.

FROM STATION TO STATION

6th December 2006

DAVID BOWIE publication in the pipeline from Genesis Publications... 'From Station To Station' by GEOFF MacCORMACK is listed in their forthcoming releases.

"During the early part of 1973, I had two huge strokes of luck and good fortune.Firstly, while working in a London office I got a call from a childhood friend called David Jones. David Jones was now David Bowie and he invited me to join his band, The Spiders, as a backing vocalist and percussionist, for a tour of the USA, Japan and the UK.The second piece of luck was that David had a fear of flying. Thus we would have to travel the thousands of miles around the world by ship, train and road.At the end of the tour David, surprisingly, announced his retirement. Nevertheless I stayed with him for another two years, travelling and working on other tours - Diamond Dogs and Young Americans - and six albums, from Aladdin Sane to Station To Station. From Station To Station is the story of those three amazing years, together with my previously unpublished photographs of Bowie at work and at play" - Geoff MacCormack (aka Warren Peace).

Punk Love (Hardcover) Punk Love (Hardcover)
by Henry Rollins (Foreword), Ian MacKaye (Introduction), Susie J. Horgan (Photographer)

Celebrating friendships that have been bound together by music since 1979, Susie J. Horgan's largely unpublished images were taken as friend and participant on the music scene, rather than as a journalist, and are both an exceptional contribution to the history of punk as well as a true reflection of punk values. She captured iconic photographs of such hardcore legends as Minor Threat, S.O.A., Teen Idles, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Cramps, Untouchables, Youth Brigade, the Germs, and many others. Punk Love documents specifically the birth of the early Washington, D.C., punk movement in 1979. D.C. punk was a different kind of punk. It was hardcore. It was explosive. It was revolutionary. But people misread punk rock as being about hate and anger. It was spiritual. It was about self-respect and justice-basic morals and values. This is punk love.

About the Author
Susie J. Horgan (also credited as "Susie Josephson" and "Susie J.") met Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye at her ice cream-scooping job at the Häagen-Dazs in Georgetown. She began photographing her D.C. friends who played in hardcore punk bands. Susie is now based in Miami. Henry Rollins is an actor, writer, poet, and the frontman for the Rollins Band. He is also the host of his own television show, The Henry Rollins Show on the IFC Network. One of Ian MacKaye's first bands, Minor Threat, was the seminal D.C. hardcore punk band. MacKaye co-founded Dischord Records and still performs with his current bands, Fugazi and The Evens.

The Show I'll Never Forget: 50 Writers Relive Their Most Memorable Concert-going Experience (Paperback) The Show I'll Never Forget: 50 Writers Relive Their Most Memorable Concert-going Experience (Paperback)
by Sean Manning

From Publishers Weekly
In this uneven but engaging collection of essays, 50 writers recall their most memorable concert experience, spanning about 50 years of popular music history. Manning does a great job of collecting a diverse range of writers and musicians for this project, and his sequencing has the intuitive logic of a well considered set list. Though the book is chronological, the parallel movements of different musical eras are allowed to bump up against each other in fascinating ways, such as when the smooth showmanship of Billy Joel gives way to the raw violence of X in 1979. The pieces in this collection are most successful when they combine personal anecdotes with specific and original recollections of the band being profiled. Tracy Chevalier's essay about seeing Queen in 1977 is a perfect evocation of experiencing live music for the first time, as she describes "the familiarity and yet also the strange rawness of the songs." While the overall pace of the collection is slowed by "you had to be there" essays about a Bruce Springsteen show, Woodstock and other events, there are enough high points to satisfy a dedicated live music aficionado. Book Description
A remarkable gathering of original essays on the one concert these writers will remember above all and forever.
It is one of the more universal questions that offers a glimpse into a person's soul: "What was the greatest concert you ever saw?" A rite of passage, a life-changing experience, a catalyst of musical epiphanies, a concert is an auditory, visual, and social experience unlike any other.

In The Show I'll Never Forget, writer Sean Manning has collected an amazing array of memorable concert testimonies from a veritable A-list of writers and musicians. Take a trip back to 1955 with the poet and novelist Ishmael Reed to see Miles Davis in Buffalo; relive New York City's club glory days with Low Life scribe Luc Sante while taking in a Public Image Limited show at the Ritz; raise your lighter high along with novelist and Believer editor Heidi Julavits at a Rush concert; get your industrial groove on with downtown novelist and poet Maggie Estep at a cacophonic Einsturzende Neubauten show; or resurrect The Notorious B.I.G. on his Brooklyn home turf with best-selling emo scribe Andy Greenwald.

No matter where your musical taste falls, these essays, all written especially for The Show I'll Never Forget, are sure to connect with anyone who loves live music.

He's a Rebel: Phil Spector: Rock & Rolls Lengendary Producer (Paperback) He's a Rebel: Phil Spector: Rock & Rolls Lengendary Producer (Paperback)
by Mark Ribowsky

From Publishers Weekly
Guitarist and songwriter Spector burst onto the California rock scene in 1958 with "To Know Him Is to Love Him," which rose to the top of the pop music charts. As he continued to compose, he also established a career as a record producer with such groups as the Paris Sisters, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Righteous Brothers and the Beatles (as that group was breaking up). Known to be temperamental and egotistical, with a personality that alienated many, he demanded total artistic control and developed a style that was dubbed the "Wall of Sound." While he is undoubtedly a seminal figure in rock history, this biography is so slavishly adulatory as to be risible. Ribowsky, a Manhattan freelance writer, not only calls Spector a genius and a leviathan, but also asserts that he "invented modern rock" and labels him the successor to Wagner and an American Mozart. Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe (Hardcover) Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe (Hardcover)
by Gayle F. Wald

From Publishers Weekly
Though Elvis, Ginger Baker, Keith Richards and Jerry Lee Lewis paid her tribute, Sister Rosetta Tharpe's vast contribution to American musical history has nearly faded away. With the publication of this entertaining and enlightening biography, Tharpe—who reputedly played her electric guitar "like a man," withstood failed marriages, racial and sexual discrimination plus economic hardships—should receive the recognition she deserves. George Washington University professor Wald (Crossing the Line) has knit together memories of 150 people familiar with Tharpe and her work. Wald's competent research provides readers with the larger historical framework within which Tharpe's contributions can be appreciated. Born in Arkansas in 1915, Rosetta Tharpe became a well-known child performer, honing her gospel guitar style in Pentecostal churches and tent revivals throughout the South. By the late 1930s Tharpe relocated to Chicago, made the life-altering choice of forsaking Pentecostal church performances and embarked on a secular career, eventually signing with Decca Records. During the 1950s Tharpe's career sagged due to changing musical tastes, but a well-timed European tour in 1957 reignited her career. Tharpe courageously cut across racial, musical and sexual boundaries, defying easy categorization, which may have contributed to her obscurity. Wald's biography of this unique performer will hopefully reawaken interest in her life and music. (Feb.)

Review
Review By: Joan Osbourne, Singer-songwriter - June 14, 2006 "A book like this is long overdue. Rosetta Tharpe was a major star and a huge influence on the musicians of her day. Listen to her recordings and you can hear all the building blocks of rock and roll." Review By: Bonnie Raitt, Singer/songwriter - June 14, 2006 "Rosetta was one of the most beloved and influential artists ever in gospel music... and she blazed a trail for the rest of us women guitarists with her indomitable spirit and accomplished, engaging style. She has long been deserving of wider recognition and a place of honor in the field of music history." Review By: Isaac Hayes, Singer/songwriter - June 14, 2006 "Rosetta Tharpe was one of my first influences, one of the first people I heard sing. I'm glad Gayle Wald has done a book on her because people need to know." Review By: Greil Marcus, author:Mystery Train:Images of America in Rock-n-Roll - June 14, 2006 "Rosetta Tharpe was larger than life--but sometimes, as Gayle Wald tells the story, she was larger than herself. Wald's account of Tharpe's 1951 marriage in Griffith Stadium in Washington, D. C.-she signed a contract for the wedding, then went looking for the husband-is a classic American tall tale, except that it happened, and, in these pages, you are there."
