Are you listening?: Cray still a great bluesman
October 11, 2006

It's hard to believe that it's been 16 years since Robert Cray's acclaimed debut on the blues/rock scene with the highly praised 'Strong Persuader' album. Since that time, he's playe locally at the F.M. Kirby Center, opened for Eric Clapton (at Madison Square Garden last week) and his released his own live recording from a week of shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London (once again opening for E.C.).

'Live From Across the Pond' is Cray's first live outing and probably long overdue for his many fans. With a sound that sits on the fence between Memphis Soul and Delta Blues, Robert Cray has carved out a niche with his restrained vocals and electrifying guitar work. There's a warmth to his compositions that borders on sterile for a bluesman, but once the guitar starts talking, it's all over. His fretwork has much in common with Clapton and Albert Collins, usually pursuing the 'woman tone,' as B.B. King so eloquently named it.

The set list on 'Across the Pond' touches most points in Cray's career from his opening notice on 'Right Next Door' up to the anti-war diatribe called 'Twenty,' which calls the whole war effort into question through the eyes of a young soldier. Robert Cray doesn't always take the 'lover done me wrong' approach to the blues, and perhaps that's part of the key to his success. It's almost as if these are the blues that just about anyone can relate to. It's the lowdown for the everyman.

From the samba of 'Phone Booth' through the lengthy organ solo courtesy of longtime cohort Jim Pugh on 'The One In The Middle,' 'Live From Across the Pond' is a fine testament to one of today's most talented and respected blues artists.

Double Shot OF THE Blues
Cray shows off decades of talent
By BILL REED
THE GAZETTE
August 10, 2007 - 11:17AM

Robert Cray took a few minutes on his 54th birthday to look back at a music career that’s spanned four decades.

Has he lived the dreams he harbored as a young man?

“Yeah, I’m working. I’m playing music,” Cray said in his calm, reflective way from his home in Los Angeles.

The man is either modest or the king of understatement.

During that time “working” and “playing music,” Cray has racked up 16 Grammy nominations and millions in album sales.

His work has infused blues with vastly divergent influences and guided the music in new directions.

He’s spent time on the road with everyone from B.B. King to Eric Clapton to Buddy Guy.

In fact, Cray played with Buddy Guy the last time he came to Colorado Springs in 2004.

On Saturday night, Cray and his band will return to the Pikes Peak Center with rootsy bluesman Keb’ Mo’.

Cray and Keb’ Mo’ plan to mix it up a little, stepping into each other’s sets for a few songs.

The Springs date is just the second concert on the tour, so fans should get to see some spontaneous moments as these two blues veterans feel each other out.

The Robert Cray Band is a tightknit live unit that’s been playing in its current formation for 15 years and thousands of gigs.

Cray finally released the first live album of his career in 2006 with the “Live From Across the Pond” double-CD gleaned from a week-long run at Royal Albert Hall in London.

The album shows off Cray’s multiple talents — a soul-influenced vocal style, a stable of original songs he’s added to the blues canon, and a fearsome ax that turns out solos voiced in clear, bell-like notes that cut through the sonic mix.

One of the finest songs on the album is “Twenty,” about a disillusioned soldier who volunteered after Sept. 11 and then wonders how he ended up protecting oil pipelines in Iraq.

Cray’s father was a career Army man who served 27 years, and the song is written from the soldier’s viewpoint. Nevertheless, Cray knows he might receive mixed reactions in a military community such as the Springs.

“The soldier wants to go out to do the right thing,” Cray said.

“The reaction is 95 percent good, from a lot of moms who have had sons and daughters over there, or military personnel.

“And then I’ve seen other people get up and leave.”

So, what took him so long to make a live album?

“I’m picky,” Cray said. “I got tons of live tapes throughout the years. But whenever we know we’re recording, we tense up; I’ve even lost my voice.”

The rare seven-night run gave them a chance to relax and Cray liked the results.

A live album isn’t the only thing Cray is trying for the first time.

After 17 years of marriage, Cray’s wife gave birth to their first child three months ago, a boy named Winston.

Winston caught his first concert on July 28, when he flew to the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago and met B.B. King and Johnny Winter, among others.

Cray’s ambitious tour schedule is a bit tougher now that he’s Big Daddy Cray.

“Now I see. Now I understand,” he said.

When he’s on the road, he calls Winston every day to talk to him and sing to him.

He even leaves one of his T-shirts in bed so his boy remembers his smell.

Cray expects to be off the road for a while this winter, and might start working on his next studio album.

We’ll see if Winston makes his way into any of the new songs.
