Jungle (1969)

Jungle were a psych rock group from California and this only LP by them was originally just a demo album. It was limited to 50 copies and nowadays those original copies are incredibly valuable. So the record wasn't officially released until the 90's reissue was made. It's really a shame because this S/T Jungle album has some nice West Coast psychedelia to offer for the genre fans. This album should have been officially released back in 1969.
The band sounds very good and in case you dig the classic sound of the late 60's Californian psych rock you will most likely enjoy this record. The organ and guitarwork are both quite impressive and those mediocre lyrics are pretty much the only thing I need to complain about. Recommended if you like this genre.

This and Victoria were reissued simultaneously with some of the most overblown hype ever. The packaging is beautiful, but the music is mostly loungy (in the wrong sense) psychrock/AOR with offkey vocals and unimpressive songwriting. Two good tracks in a Bob Smith/DR Hooker direction close the sides but the rest of the LP is pretty weak in my ears. Others are more enthusiastic. Originals are ultrarare, possibly a demo press only.

Overly serious singing mixes with a slightly heavy guitar-and-organ base and some bizarre frantic drumming to make this a completely unique listen. It’s certainly not the masterpiece some have claimed, but it grew on me. The weird-ass drumming style may be inept, but somehow it fits in this context, and a few hooks sneak up on you. The songs are very long and meander a bit, but they’re not exactly boring. A strange one that’s gotten more attention than it deserves, but if you don’t get your hopes up too high you might enjoy it.

Maneige "Ni Vent...Ni Nouvelle" (1977)

MANEIGE is the Quebec band that epitomizes best the Quebec Prog boom from 74 to 79. Their music are probably one of the best example of what Fusion music can be by blending in classical and folk elements together with jazz tones the whole thing having a very progressive rock ideal and could also fit the chamber rock style.

Triode "On N'a Pas Fini D'Avoir Tout Vu" (1971)

Triode is a total obscure and forgotten french psych prog band from early 70's who manage to release a sole album in 1971 named On N'a Pas Fini D'avoir Tout Vu at Futura label. The album will be released on CD by Mellow records almost 30 years later. The album is instrumental entirely dominated by excellent flute playing by Michel Edelin, who will please fans of progressive music for sure, the similarity is with of course Jethro Tull or some bands from canterbury from that period, maybe early Caravan or Traffic for ex, but Triode playes a more jazzy kind of instrumental prog with fascinating flute interludes.The psychedelic sound of the guitar combined with brilliant flute chops gives overall an excellent example of how great and imaginative were the bands in the '70's in progressive rock movement. The album is up tempo, not a single piece is weak, nice musicianship, specialy on opening track Magic Flower, Moulos Grimpos, Blahsha or the cover of Beatles - Come together show a band in big form, but with all that they remain totaly unknown to larger public, even in prog circles is kinda forgotten.

The Word of Life "Further Ahead" (1992)

For a short period in the early to mid 1990’s, a collective of Swedish musicians decided to relive the past and create improvisational psychedelic rock music similar to the early 70’s masters such as International Harvester and Algarnas Tradgard.
Acts such as S.T. Mikael, Adam, Stefan and the Entheogens all recorded for the low budget label Xotic Mind. The primary difference between the modern day copiers and the 1970’s masters is the one-dimensional nature of the recordings.This trait can be attributed to most of the albums being solo projects with only guest musicians.This trait can be attributed to most of the albums being solo projects with only guest musicians.Long burning jams such as “Space Fu?king” and “Can You Feel it - Flowing Free” are offset by calm flute and hand percussion ragas like “The Devil”. What one notices in repeated listens is the need for an editor (a problem for many of these kind of solo ventures). Most of the jams meander on for too long and the inclusion of a couple of Earthy country-bumpkin vocal tracks with Louisiana-front-porch harmonica are in complete contrast to the hazy heady cosmic aspirations the album pretends to be.Still, the album works on many levels, most notably the trance-like jams, which can get quite intense. The guitar tone is super fuzz loud and the percussion is particularly active. Recommended for all Krautrock, space rock and early Swedish pioneer groups. The original LP contained a paste-on cover and is now quite rare.

Svanfríður "What's Hidden There?" (1972)

Hailing from Iceland, SVANFRIDUR were a four-piece who in the summer of 1972 recorded a single album, titled "What's Hidden There?". The album, recorded in London and released at the time only in a few dozen copies, can be considered one of the most interesting examples of heavy progressive rock mixed with influences from local folk music. SVANFRIDUR's compositions feature complex vocal harmonies and an original, inventive use of violin and Moog synthesizers, courtesy of guest musician and arranger Sigurdur Johnsson.

Ferris (1971)

Finnish guitarist and singer-songwriter Dave Lindholm, who has made a career under his own name, recorded with several bands over 35 albums. Lindholm's first recordings were made with his band Ferris recorded in 1971 for Love Records (same label as Charlies and Wigwam). His unique Fender Strat guitar style and great arrangements your hear on the Ferris album are just outstanding.
His solo album "Sirkus" from 1973 is considered to be one of the most important Finnish rock albums. Pure bluesy underground, all English vocals, hammond organ and great rhythms section. An original Ferris album is next to impossible to find.
Amazing and solid Cream influenced bluesy underground rock with first class guitar and vocals. One of the best and rarest Finnish albums.

Burnin' Red Ivanhoe (1970)

Burnin' Red Ivanhoe was formed back in 1967, and that makes them one of the first scandinavian prog bands. Their style was quite original from the start, blending jazz-rock with R&B, blues, psychedelia etc.. their debut from 1969 (double album) "M 144" sounds somewhat like THE WHO with jazz influences. Most of Burnin' Red Ivanhoe's albums have that certain scandinavian touch to it, similar to early 70's prog groups such as WIGWAM, CULPEPER'S ORCHARD and TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI. In 1971, the band released the album "WWW", which is probably a good place to start (for proggers), as it contains some of their most progressive and interesting work. The self-titled album they released in 1970 (another gem!), also contains the track "Secret Oyster Service", and quite soon after that, a new, even more jazz-orientated group was formed, called SECRET OYSTER. Burnin' Red Ivanhoe was disbanded in 1972 (although they released one more album in 1974), and as a result, most members moved over to SECRET OYSTER. Burnin' Red Ivanhoe is recommended for fans of early scandinavian prog rock.

Kultivator “Barndomens Stigar" (1981)

KULTIVATOR is a Swedish band as unique as unclassifiable. This was formed in 1978 by the nucleus of TUNNELBANAN (Stefan Carlsson, Johan Svärd and Johan Hedrén), symphonic prog rock band highly influenced by YES and GENESIS, the guitarist Jonas Linge whose playing is reminiscent of Phil Miller and the soprano Ingemo Rylander. The band split just after the release of their first and unique album, due to the apparition of Punk-Rock and New-wave that appealed more to people at that time. The LP named "Barndomens Stigar" recorded in 1981 was reedited on CD by the APM label in 1992. On that occasion, the band reformed in order to release two bonus tracks. Today, the members of KULTIVATOR follow various artistic solo careers (music, theater and teaching).
KULTIVATOR's music : a vast field of investigations ! It seems impossible in a first approximation to classify them in a musical category rather than in another. Indeed, the facets of their music are so numerous, and one can notice the same about their influences, and their originality taken from their folkloric Swedish roots. The band itself recognized the following influences : MAGMA, KING CRIMSON, HATFIELD & THE NORTH, HENRY COW, ART BEARS, GENTLE GIANT, ART ZOYD and UNIVERS ZERO. A true hybrid to sum up that blends influences from Zeuhl, Art Rock, Canterbury, RIO and symphonic prog rock.

Landberk “Riktigt Akta” (1992)

LANDBERK is one of Sweden's darkest bands. Their sound is sombre and almost mournful. There is a subtle balance between the Mellotron sounds, the guitar parts and vocals full of melancholy and the rhythm gaps from bass and drums. Evoking KING CRIMSON KING to GENTLE GIANT.
