Long John Baldry was a blues musician. Born John William Baldry in Haddon, Derbyshire, England, he grew to a towering 2.01 m (6 ft, 7 in) that resulted in the nickname "Long" John. Blessed with a deep, rich voice, he was one of the first British vocalists to sing blues music. In the early '60s, he sang with Alexis Korner's band Blues Incorporated with whom he recorded the first British blues album in 1962. He then joined and led another band, the Hoochie Coochie Men, that featured Rod Stewart doing vocals and Geoff Bradford on guitar. Popular on the London club circuit, Baldry made a guest appearance on one of The Beatles 1964 British TV specials. In 1967, he recorded a pop song "Let the Heartaches Begin" that went to number one in Britain followed by a 1968 hit titled "Mexico." During the last half of the 1960s, he led a band called Bluesology that included a young musician, Reginald Dwight, who went on to enormous fame as Elton John. The "John" in his name is a homage to Baldry.

During the 1970s, Baldry recorded a number of songs that met with reasonable success in Britain before moving to North America. He made a minor breakthrough into the all-important North American market with the song "Don't Try to Lay No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll." Into the late 1970s and 1980s, he had continued to make records but had also made commercial voice-overs as well as doing the voices of Captain Capacitor and Old Man Pearson on the Canadian animated series ReBoot, and Dr. Ivo Robotnik and KOMPLEX in the children's cartoon series, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Bucky O'Hare, respectively.

After spending time in New York City and Los Angeles in 1978, Baldry chose to settle permanently in Vancouver, British Columbia where he became a Canadian citizen. He regularly toured the Canadian west coast as well as the U.S. northwest. In 1979, he teamed up with Seattle singer Kathi MacDonald to record a very successful version of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin" following which MacDonald became a permanent part of his touring group for the next two decades. Currently recording on the Stony Plain record label, Long John Baldry has built a solid base of devout followers and continues to tour worldwide.

He died in 2005 of a respiratory infection.

'Long John' Baldry Dies At 64 'Long John' Baldry Dies At 64

British R&B artist "Long John" Baldry died last night (July 21) in Vancouver after battling a chest infection for four months. He was 64.

Having begun his career playing folk and jazz in the late 1950s, Baldry was one of the founding fathers of British rock'n'roll in the '60s. Eric Clapton has stated many times that he was inspired to pick up the guitar after seeing Baldry perform.

While appearing at the Cavern in Liverpool in the early '60s, Baldry became friends with Paul McCartney. For their internationally televised special "Around the Beatles" in 1964, the Beatles invited Baldry to perform, along with P.J. Proby and Cilla Black.

Later in the decade, Baldry performed with the influential British R&B bands Blues Incorporated and Cyril Davies' R & B All Stars. He later fronted the Hoochie Coochie Men, which included Rod Stewart, who later joined Baldry in Steam Packet.

After a brief period with Bluesology (with Elton John on keyboards), Baldry went solo and scored a No. 1 U.K. hit with the ballad "Let the Heartaches Begin" in 1967. With production assistance from Stewart and John, Baldry recorded the 1971 album "It Ain't Easy" for Warner Bros., which featured his signature song, "Don't Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock'n'Roll."

After immigrating to Canada in the mid '80s, Baldry recorded for EMI Music Canada, and since 1991 recorded five albums for Stony Plain Records. Stony Plain is slated to re-release "It Ain't Easy" and its follow-up, "Everything Stops for Tea," this fall.

Since the early '90s, Baldry also was known in Canada for his extensive voice work in commercials. As well, he provided the voice of Robotnik on the "Sonic the Hedgehog" computer game and narrated "Winnie the Pooh" recordings for Walt Disney Records.

'Long John Baldry launched me on my musical career.'- Rod Stewart'Long John Baldry launched me on my musical career.'- Rod Stewart

I was 18 and playing harmonica and singing a Muddy Waters song in a railway station, when Long John Baldry ran over to me from the other side of the tracks. I had just been to see him play at a club; he was one of the top Bluesmen in England. But John didn’t sing Muddy Waters songs – he knew Muddy Waters, had performed with him and with Ramblin' Jack Elliott too. And now he was asking,” Would you like to join the band?”

For me, just shaking his hand – knowing all the great musicians whose hand he’d shaken before – was mind-blowing. But so was John. Picture this elegant man with a proper English accent, never without a tie, a towering six-foot-seven. I was a huge fan and I was intimidated by his offer. Rod Stewart wasn’t in demand in those days; no one was interested. I immediately said yes. John had a knack for discovering talent. Ginger Baker, Jeff Beck and Brian Jones all worked with him early on. Elton John played piano in one of his bands, other Rolling Stones too – Charlie, Ron Wood, and Keith. In 1962, when the Rolling Stones were just getting started, they opened for him in London. Eric Clapton has said many times that John was one of the musicians that inspired him to play the Blues. And for their internationally televised special in 1964, the Beatles invited John to perform his version of 'I Got My Mojo Working'. In those days the only music we fell in love with was the Blues, and John was the first white guy singing it, in his wonderful voice. It was the true Blues and everyone looked up to him. I wasn’t very good on the harmonica, but my gravelly voice caught his attention. He was the first person of any stature to tell me, “You really have the gift. You have what it takes”. He turned some of us into musical legends, but it was never what he expected from himself. You didn’t hear John on the radio or see him on TV. He just played these clubs that I started going to when I was 16. At the time I hadn’t thought much about performing except as a way to meet girls. John put me on an amazing wage, close to $100 a week, which in the early ‘60s was an astronomical amount. I remember thinking, "If this lasts for 6 months I’ll be able to buy a little sports car which I’d been saving for. Of course, that would help me get some girls". We didn’t rehearse before my first performance with John’s band and I was very nervous so I had a few drinks. John introduced me as an 'up-and-coming' new singer and I sang John Lee Hooker's classic 'Dimples', which died a death! There was a horrible silence after my performance. But John was great. He’s one of the kindest guys, reassuring and positive. He just said, "Well come away, don’t worry about it."

Then he had me come to his apartment the next day and go through some songs on the guitar to get the keys worked out. He always had encouraging words, especially when I’d mess up on stage. He’d just say, "Oh you’re young yet; it’ll all come to you". It wasn’t dismissive. It was always said in a way that made me feel he believed what he was telling me. John taught me so much – things that apply to my life and things that made me the human being I am today. He had tremendous stage presence. "You watch any great performer and they never stand at the microphone with their legs together." he said.

"Have a manly stance. Be bold on stage – bold as you would be playing soccer", which I was good at then. He taught me to project with my hands when I’m singing. See me onstage today and you’re seeing what John taught me. John was really looking out for me when we were on the road. My first time in a club outside of London, we played a club In Manchester (Kyle’s note – where Eric Burdon lived and started). He said, "Don’t worry just get up there and sing". I was nervous. A band mate gave me a pill – an amphetamine called a black bomber. I got onstage and played one song for 20 minutes, the same verse over and over. John found out and reprimanded the guy, firing him for corrupting me. He was very fatherly, always looking out for my welfare. As our careers progressed, John continued playing in clubs, which he’s still happily doing. He didn’t write songs; he’s never been ambitious that way. Although he made some albums that got radio play, he was never a huge recording star. But in the UK he did have a Number 1 hit with 'Let the Heartaches Begin'. He’s not particularly worried about financial gain or seeing himself in the papers. He’s comfortable as long as he can play his guitar. John may not be a legend in the proverbial sense, but he’s a cult hero with his own following and the fans who flock to his performances. He leaves me phone messages with that accent of his: "Dear Roddy, how the hell are you?" Every time I pick up a guitar, I play the old folk song 'Mother Ain't Dead', which I learned with John in the mid 60s. We both love the Blues, and we’re tremendously in love with American Folk music. In fact next time I’m touring & he’s in the neighborhood, I think I’ll ask him to come onstage and play 'Mother Ain't Dead', just the two of us. It’ll be great.

It Ain't Easy features a British blues/rock line-up befitting the man behind the Long John Baldry moniker. This album returns Baldry to a decidedly edgier and hipper audience, with a literal cast of all-stars on some of the more adventurous material he had covered to date. This is no doubt due, at least in part, to the involvement of Rock superstars Rod Stewart and Elton John. In fact, John confesses to have taken the last name in his stage moniker from Baldry's first. Among their contributions to the project, Stewart and Elton divided the production tasks -- each taking a side of the original album. Immediately, Baldry sheds the MOR blue-eyed pop soul image. The backing band on Stewart's side include fellow Face and future Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, on electric guitar and acoustic guitarist Sam Mitchell, who appeared on many of Stewart's early '70s solo albums. His contributions to this side are numerous, including an especially potent solo on Leadbelly's 'Black Girl'. This authentic duet featuring Maggie Bell on co-lead vocals is a definite return to the Mississippi Delta for the song which is also known as the Bluegrass standard 'In the Pines.' Other highlights from Stewart's sector include the humorous and self-biographical lead-off track 'Conditional Discharge', which is paired with the full-tilt boogie of 'Don't Try to Lay No Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll'. Arguably the oddest cover version on this album is also among the best; 'Morning Morning' from head Fug Tuli Kupferberg is given new and surprisingly fresh life by Baldry. Highlights from Elton John's side include Randy Newman's 'Let's Burn Down the Cornfield', which would have fit perfectly on John's Tumbleweed Connection album. Add- itionally, 'Rock Me When He's Gone' was actually recorded by John, although his version remained unissued until the 1992 odds and sods compilation Rare Masters.

Everything Stops For Tea was recorded in Jan/Feb 1972 in London, England. Side one was produced by Elton John and side two was produced by Rod Stewart. The record was released in Spring 1972 and John spent the rest of the year touring North America to promote the album. The artwork for the album cover was a drawing by Ron Wood based on the Alice in Wonderland story. The album came with a gatefold sleeve which opened up to show a picture of Long John and band at the San Bernardino swing auditorium in southern California. Everything Stops For Tea comes from a 1930's English vaudeville play and is quite fun and easy to sing along to! Long John does a blistering version of Willie Dixon's You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover which actually would make a good title for John's biography which will be written over the next couple of years. Many people have been quick to judge John based on his ballad period or other things. Mother Ain't Dead is a great acoustic folk song that Long John and Rod Stewart duet on. A picture sleeve 45 of this song was released in 1972 and the cover photo was a neat picture of John and Rod in the studio. This was the second time they had ever recorded together as Rod sang on the B side Up Above My Head (A side was You'll Be Mine) which was released on United Artists in the UK, 1964.For all the Rod Stewart fans and collectors this will be a great opportunity to pick up a rare Stewart recording seldom heard. Armit's Trousers is a nice acoustic piano piece by the great Ian Armit who was a jazz musician in England before switching to Blues and Rock.

Blues Legend Long John Baldry Dies Fri Jul 22

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Long John Baldry, the British blues legend who helped launch the careers of such rock greats as Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones, has died, his agent and friends said. He was 64.

Baldry was admitted to a Vancouver hospital with respiratory problems in April and died of a chest infection Thursday, agent Frank Garcia said on the musician's Web site.

"The music world has lost an absolute legend," said close friend Anya Wilson, a Toronto music publicist who worked with Baldry in the 1970s.

"They've lost one of the first and most powerful white blues singers — an innovator, an entrepreneur of new music and one of the most wonderful people you could hope to meet."

Baldry, nicknamed Long John because of his 6-foot-7 height, was born in East Maddon, England, but became a Canadian citizen in 1981.

Credited as one of the main forces in British blues, rock and pop music in the 1960s, he first hit the top of the U.K. singles charts in 1967 with "Let the Heartaches Begin."

One of his most memorable hits was "Don't Try to Lay No Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll" was co-produced by Stewart and Elton John.

Although Baldry released over 40 albums — that included the songs "You've Lost That Loving Feeling," "Come and Get Your Love" and "A Thrill's a Thrill" — singing was not considered his forte.

He was perhaps best known for nurturing the nascent talent of a host of musicians who are now worldwide superstars.

Baldry's early 1960s stage act featured the likes of Stewart, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Jimmy Paige and Ginger Baker.
