Swinging 60s style (01/06/06)
London's V&A museum is taking a nostalgic look at an era where mini-skirts, flat boots and pop groups like the Beatles ruled.
Key looks from the 60s
Through a display of around 60 garments, the Sixties Fashion: Swinging London fashion exhibition will show how a series of key looks evolved in London during the 1960s. The showcase will also explore the role of fashion starting from the mid-1950s (when Mary Quant established her first boutique) to the early 1970s.
King’s Road and Carnaby Street
Other featured designers include Ossie Clark, Pierre Cardin and Paco Rabanne. The exhibition will also explore the influence of London's King’s Road and Carnaby Street on international trends.
Swinging 60s in print
All is not lost if you cannot visit the exhibition, as the Swinging Sixties book will capture the vibe of the showcase. Edited by Christopher Breward, David Gilbert and Jenny Lister, the book will be published by V&A Publications to accompany the display.
It will include lively contributions from prominent authors and stunning new shots of key pieces from the V&A's dress collection.
You will be able to discover the role played by designers, retail entrepreneurs, journalists, photographers and filmmakers in promoting a new way of dressing that went beyond the British capital.
The book will also explores issues such as how the fashion scene interacted with the worlds of art, education, journalism, music, the beauty industry and new social and political climate.
Graphical 60s
Graphic design is also showcased at the V&A in the Sixties Graphics exhibition to complement Sixties Fashion.
Items such as posters, magazines, photographs and album covers will be displayed, along with information about the emergence of 'counter-culture', the 'underground press' and Psychedelia.
Many highlights of the exhibition come from the collection formed by Barry Miles, a key figure in the 1960s and founder of Indica Bookshop, the unofficial headquarters of the London alternative scene.
V&A showcase
Sixties Fashion, sponsored by Miss Selfridge, runs from 6 June to 25 February 2007, with Sixties Graphics running from 6 June to 12 November 2006.
