Lesley Hornby a.k.a. Twiggy arrives in the U.S. She's 5'6", weighs 91 lbs. and her measurements are 31-22-32.

Twiggy was the most famous model of the Sixties. Her big break came when she was named "The Face of 1966" by a British newspaper. Her career was spurred on by her Svengali-like boyfriend-slash-manager at the time Justin De Villeneuve (not his real name!). With her skinny body, large eyes, and boyish haircut, she was the idol of many young girls in the Sixties. Twiggy look-alike contests were held, and a variety of Twiggy merchandise was sold, such as lunchboxes, vinyl coin purses, paper dolls, and board games. In America, Mattel, manufacturer of the Barbie (R) doll, manufactured a Twiggy doll with great Mod ensembles sold separately. Twiggy started a new fashion model image: the waif (long before Kate Moss popularized it in the mid-Nineties). As the decade progressed, Twiggy grew her hair, and became more interested in the Thirties-style of fashions such as those designed by Biba. By the Seventies Twiggy had broken free of Justin, and became involved in singing and acting, as well as continuing to model. She has appeared in several films, and even a short-lived sitcom in Americacalled "Princesses" with future-Nanny Fran Drescher. She has also released several albums. She wrote three books: "Twiggy by Twiggy" in 1968, "Twiggy: An Autobiography" in 1973, and, most recently, "Twiggy in Black and White" in 1998.

Space Age
The Space Age Design Era 1957-1972
I define the Space Age era as the 15 year period between the 1957 launching of Sputnik and the last manned moon mission in 1972. During that time the public remained fixated on space exploration. The 1973 energy crisis halted and even reversed the forward thinking futuristc mindset that had dominated the culture prior to it.
Fashion

Fashion of the future has always been as important as the technical hardware in science fiction filmmaking. From Metropolis to Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, the overall look can make or break a movie. In time, the set designs, costumes and special effects would show their age and sometimes look outrageously ridiculous. But as long as both the premise of the film and message are strong, everything else is a non-issue. This is the case for 2001: A Space Odyssey and many other films before or after 2001. Fashion design in science fiction film and television has always been minimalist which reflects how our society sees itself in the future. American designer Rudi Gernriech was one of many fashion designers that explored these ideas in the 1960s. Fabric was important to the look as well with French designer Paco Rabanne. Rabanne dressed young Jane Fonda in the erotic romp Barbarella in 1968.

Twiggy was born in north London on September 19th, 1949. She was named "The Face of '66" by the Daily Express. In the mid 60's at 16 years of age, Twiggy became internationally known as the world's first supermodel, her photographic modelling success epitomising the age.

Twiggy was the world's first supermodel: a skinny kid with the face of an angel who became an icon. 'She'll last a couple of weeks', a bystander quipped in 1967 when she took New York by storm. Thirty five years on and Twiggy is still a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world.
In early 1966, Lesley Hornby found herself propelled to the heights of international fame as the world's first supermodel - Twiggy.

With her waif like figure, boyish hair cut and striking eye lashes she created an image that would epitomise an era. Twiggy became the idol for millions of teenage girls of the sixties revolution

By the age of 17, Twiggy was one of the most famous faces on the planet: here photograph was even encased in a time capsule and sent into space. By this time in the sixties, Twiggy had already become a household name across the globe, an icon whose image graced the covers of Vogue, Tatler and even her own American publication Her Mod, Mod Teen World.

During her years as a model, Twiggy posed for some of the top photographers, including Barry Lategan, Melvin Sokolsky and Bert Stern who would make three films about her extraordinary trip to the United States in 1967.

Throughout the decade Twiggy was notorious as being only a photographic model. However in 2002, Twiggy took to the catwalk for the first time modelling fashions at the prestigious Milan fashion week.

Although Twiggy officially retired from modelling in 1970 when she was cast in 'The Boy Friend' she has been involved in various modelling assignments, highlights include posing with David Bowie to create the classic shot that became the cover of his Pin Ups album. Most recently Twiggy modelled the autumn / winter collection for UK label Viyella.

Back in 1966, Lesley Hornby was about to change her name and experience her first taste of fame which all began on a January afternoon and a trip to Leonard's hair salon in Mayfair....

"I was in the salon for about seven hours and they were cutting and colouring it, it was all extremely exciting for me. He was brilliant, I went from this mouse like brown to the colour which I have kept now."

Following the hair cut, Twiggy tells of the photo shoot that was to follow.

"Well after the hair cut I got on the bus to Barry's (Lategan) and met this really sweet lovely man who was to take my photos, I mean I'd never been in front of a camera before!"

"She appeared with this short hair cut which was an extraordinary transformation in her because her face came out more prominently and she's got a beautifully modelled face, totally well proportioned and there was something very new to me because she had painted her own eyelashes below her eyes and this was something no one had been doing or had done, she sat in front of the camera and it was dazzling..."

Barry Lategan, talks of the photos produced from the session

"There are so many adjectives to describe what 'photogenic' actually is, but my photos of Twiggy show the result of that."

"I spent the afternoon photographing her, we photographed her side on, Leonard changed her hair into a curl, he put a plait down the side of her, we smoothed her hair away we just tried different ways to show this hair cut. A few days later I made prints and as usual Leonard displayed them in his salon."

Twiggy speaks about what happened after her photos were displayed in Leonard's salon...

"Leonard hung them up in his salon and Deidre McSharry of the Daily Express saw them and said "Who is this girl?" Anyway she phoned us up and we went along to her office and she wrote this big article on me which appeared in the Daily Express declaring me the new 'Face Of '66' and it all happened from there really!"

And so the Twiggy phenomenon begun.

The Modelling Years
1966 - 1970

Twiggy's slim figure and short, boyish hair represented youthfulness and the new-found Sixties freedom

Twiggy records her first single 'Beautiful Dreams' for Ember records, released in the UK and then distributed throughout the world.

Twiggy releases her first line of clothing called Twiggy Dresses. The range was aimed at the teenage market.



Twiggy makes the promotional trip to New York. Whilst in the US, Bert Stern makes three documentaries about her visit 'Twiggy In New York', 'Twiggy In Hollywood' and 'Twiggy, Why?' for the ABC network.

Twiggy graces the covers of various American magazines, Vogue, Newsweek, Harpers Bazaar etc.

Twiggy's own magazine is published in the US under the title Twiggy: Her Mod Mod Teen World.
