Twiggy modeled for less than four years, but her impact on the world of modeling and fashion was immeasurable. She made enough money to be named the highest paid model for the entire decade. She became the first mass-merchandised model, for which the Moscow Literary Gazette denounced her as a "tool of capitalism." In addition to her own line of clothing, which included Twiggy dresses and hosiery, there were Twiggy dolls, cosmetics, board games, lunchboxes, and more.

She left the world of fashion to pursue an acting career, which also found her demonstrating her singing abilities. She debuted in the 1920s era musical The Boy Friend, and while that film earned her critical praise, as well as a couple of Golden Globes, her follow-up appearances in a series of low-budget pictures did little to advance her movie career. She continued to perform on stage, mostly in musicals, and by the early '80s, scored a Tony nomination for her turn in My One and Only.

The waif look enjoyed a comeback in the early '90s, with models like Kate Moss being referred to as the Twiggy of the '90s. The original waif supermodel temporarily came out of retirement during this time to be photographed by top shutterbugs such as Annie Leibovitz and John Fwanel. Twiggy is still one of the most recognized names in the fashion world, and her influence as an icon is still very apparent, despite the fact that she left the business over 30 years ago. In 2002, she reemerged on the catwalk for Milan's fashion week, and continues to act, dance and sing.

Even though she modeled during an era when little thought was given to stripping defenseless creatures of their fur, Twiggy has become a staunch supporter of the anti-fur campaign. Twiggy's stick-like physique was a radical reversal from the voluptuous ideals of female perfection from previous generations. Being all of 91 pounds and measuring a meager 31-22-32 during the height of her prominence in the late '60s, a Newsweek cover story of the day described her as "four straight limbs in search of a body" and as having the "frail torso of the teenage choirboy."

There may have been more curvaceous women selling a certain image of femininity, but Twiggy's unusual sex appeal came through in her confident, blasé demeanor. She helped change the concept of what made a woman sexy without adapting to the norm of the times.

At the peak of her popularity in the mid to late '60s, Twiggy was one of the most recognized faces and names in the world, and undoubtedly the best known model up to that point. She was named the "Face of '66" in the UK after only a brief period in the modeling profession. She was Britain's biggest moneymaker of 1967, the best paid model of the '60s, and was mobbed everywhere she went when she first visited the U.S. in the late '60s.

In February 1967, Twiggy became the first model to be featured in Madame Tussaud's famous wax museum. The following year, some 200,000 Twiggy dresses were sold worldwide, and Twiggy merchandise such as coloring books and dolls were also popular products.

Twiggy switched gears when she debuted in The Boy Friend, a critical and box-office hit directed by Ken Russell. She won two Golden Globes for her performance, in the categories of Best Actress and Most Promising Newcomer. In 1984, she was nominated for a Tony for her singing and dancing in the Broadway musical, My One and Only.

During the '90s, Twiggy's name was being thrown around the modeling industry when the waif look made a comeback. Models such as Kate Moss and Amber Valletta gained notice for what was being touted as the Twiggy look for the '90s, or less flatteringly, the heroin-chic image. In perhaps the ultimate tribute to the "Face of '66," Marilyn Manson's former bassist is named Twiggy Ramirez (partly) in her honor.

Leslie Hornby was designing and making her own clothes since her early teens, and found worldwide success with her "Twiggy" dresses before she reached 19. The simple garments looked fabulous on someone as or nearly as skinny as the woman the dress was named for, and were seen as a bold departure from the more elaborate gowns and sophisticated Chanel suits the previous generation of models posed in.

Twiggy's boyish haircut and lime-green miniskirts worn with green tights represented the youth and freedom of the '60s, and were copied by millions of young ladies the world over. Her sense of style didn't please everyone, however, as self-proclaimed fashion authority Mr. Blackwell put her on his Worst Dressed List in 1971, and again in 1983.
